Book excerpt: A dispirited small town in Georgia believes it lives under a curse that was conjured by the towns founding father during the Civil War. The people of Fair Haven do not share one anothers joys. They do not comfort one anothers pains. They barely relate to one another, but for clandestine, they huddle at the back of the nights quiet. They have never learned to rally around their own. Or have they? They agree on one thing: there are monsters in the woods. An agent of US Fish and Wildlife, Causey Bentz, has set up camp in the neck of the woods before and seems to be as interested in the bigfoot on the mountain as the citizens are prepared to pretend it does not exist, for the last thing they intend to be is having backwoods fodder as a punch line for the worlds unbelief in mysterious things. The local pastor uncovers a rich vein of civic pride and indiscreet support within tattered linking of folks and is pressed into service as an undersheriff. If the people will not attend Sunday services, the sanctuary will come to them. Father Chad, as they have come to call him, makes house calls. Polly Mankiller, the sheriff, attempts to balance the spiritual keel of the town that is seeing young folks drop off the rolls forever, for a scourge of poison in the form of recreational boredoms first casualty is killing them. A biblical reign of weather draws the worlds focus on a town that only wanted to be left alone. In a time when people are increasingly alienated, what first appears to have been parts of a cosmic mockery shows increasingly to be blessings of a merciful god. Slowly the people come to recognize their need for one another. Mr. Blackburn, known affectionately as Blackie, is the unofficial mayor of the town and somewhat of an old-style fixer. He is one of the few men in the town to have grown up without a father and whose life dramatizes the fact that not all poverty is rooted in the lack of material things. Fair Haven depends on Blackies masterful but understated grip on the town, but to whom will he lean as spiritual decay gnaws at him from the inside? Is Bigfoot a descendant of Gigantopithecus blacki? A relict hominoid? A Heidelbergensis? Will Blackie help to hold together a town that seems primed to implode under the weight of meteorological oddities and strange creatures at the edge of the woods? Sometimes, it is enough to believe in those who believe.

Book excerpt: The New York Times bestselling author of the Cat in the Stacks mysteries is back with more of those sleuthing Southern belles, the Ducote sisters... An’gel and Dickce Ducote, busy with plans for the Athena Garden Club’s spring tour of grand old homes, are having trouble getting the other club members to help. The rest of the group is all a-flutter now that dashing and still-eligible Hadley Partridge is back to restore his family mansion. But the idle chatter soon turns deadly serious when a body turns up on the Partridge estate after a storm... The remains might belong to Hadley’s long-lost sister-in-law, Callie, who everyone thought ran off with Hadley years ago. And if it’s not Callie, who could it be? As the Ducotes begin uncovering secrets, they discover that more than one person in Athena would kill to be Mrs. Partridge. Now An’gel and Dickce will need to get their hands dirty if they hope to reveal a killer’s deep-buried motives before someone else’s name is mud...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This novel is an exciting book to read and the genre is between a thriller and a mystery, because of all the twists and turns that this story takes you through. The story talks about everyday life and what really goes on in our lives. It touched upon all aspects of life and the ups and downs and the heart aches of life, death and deceptions. My husband Victor believed in me enough that he gave me this title and encouraged me to write this book. He said, Write a novel surrounding this title, The Jealous Bridesmaid. At first I laughed and I thought to myself that he was crazy, because I didnt know the first thing about writing a book. I eventually sat down at my computer and started typing and to my surprise, I wrote this novel. The Jealous Bridesmaid is based upon two best friends Rozelle Grant and Rachel Smith. Rozelle was the bad girl with good looks and lots of drama in her life and Rachel was the strong silence type; she was a spiritual woman but very bossy. The girls grow up together in a small rural town in Georgia. Rozelle Grant was a very pretty and a perky young lady with lots of problems with multi personalities, because she was envious of every body, especially Rachel. Rozelle tried to destroy Rachels relationship with her fiance Raymond. Rozelle would use whatever means possible to get what she wanted, even if she had to kill to get it. Rachel Smith came from a large family that lived on a farm. After high school, she went to college on a four year basketball scholarship to Georgia University. After college she move back to Parkerville and got a job working at a Tire Plant, where she was a supervisor. Her fiance Raymond also worked there, as a supervisor but in another department. Rachel was the rock and the support system for her large family and everybody depended on her. After dating Raymond for two years, they finally got engaged and were planning to wed, but Rozelle would try to do everything possible to destroy that relationship and to make sure that the wedding never took place. My first novel is based in a country setting, a rural town in the south of Georgia. This novel touched upon real life scenarios, such as funerals, drowning, deaths, wedding, and births. It also touches upon every aspect of life and the imagination as well. Christianity, relationships, breakups, make ups, heart aches, homosexually, bullying, voodoo rituals and lots more. There are situations about obesity, hypertension, high risk pregnancy and the outcome of what happen when it is not treated. Some parts of this story makes you laugh, cry and think about life as a whole. I compiled a lot of different situations together to come up with a great book. Readers will definitely be intrigued with my novel and cannot wait to find out what happens next.

Book excerpt: This volume assembles critical essays on, and excerpts from, works of contemporary women writers in Britain. Its focus is the interaction of aesthetic play and ethical commitment in the fictional work of women writers whose interest in testing and transgressing textual boundaries is rooted in a specific awareness of a gendered multicultural reality. This position calls for a distinctly critical impetus of their writing involving the interaction of the political and the literary as expressed in innovative combinations of realist and postmodern techniques in works by A. S. Byatt, Maureen Duffy, Zoe Fairbairns, Eva Figes, Penelope Lively, Sara Maitland, Suniti Namjoshi, Ravinder Randhawa, Joan Riley, Michele Roberts, Emma Tennant, Fay Weldon, Jeanette Winterson. All contributions to this volume address aspects of these writers' positions and techniques with a clear focus on their interest in transgressing boundaries of genre, gender and (post)colonial identity. The special quality of these interpretations, first given in the presence of writers at a symposium in Potsdam, derives from the creative and prosperous interactions between authors and critics. The volume concludes with excerpts from the works of the participating writers which exemplify the range of concrete concerns and technical accomplisments discussed in the essays. They are taken from fictional works by Debjani Chatterjee, Maureen Duffy, Zoe Fairbairns, Eva Figes, Sara Maitland, and Ravinder Randhawa. They also include the creative interactions of Suniti Namjoshi and Gillian Hanscombe in their joint writing and Paul Magrs' critical engagement with Sara Maitland.
