Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first systematic study of strikebreaking, intimidation, and anti-unionism in the United States, subjects essential to a full understanding of labor's fortunes in the twentieth century. Paradoxically, the country that pioneered the expansion of civil liberties allowed corporations to assemble private armies to disrupt union organizing, spy on workers, and break strikes. Using a social-historical approach, Stephen Norwood focuses on the mercenaries the corporations enlisted in their anti-union efforts--particularly college students, African American men, the unemployed, and men associated with organized crime. Norwood also considers the paramilitary methods unions developed to counter mercenary violence. The book covers a wide range of industries across much of the country. Norwood explores how the early twentieth-century crisis of masculinity shaped strikebreaking's appeal to elite youth and the media's romanticization of the strikebreaker as a new soldier of fortune. He examines how mining communities' perception of mercenaries as agents of a ribald, sexually unrestrained, new urban culture intensified labor conflict. The book traces the ways in which economic restructuring, as well as shifting attitudes toward masculinity and anger, transformed corporate anti-unionism from World War II to the present.

Book excerpt: In the United States, as in many parts of the world, people are discriminated against based on the color of their skin. This type of skin tone bias, or colorism, is both related to and distinct from discrimination on the basis of race, with which it is often conflated. Preferential treatment of lighter skin tones over darker occurs within racial and ethnic groups as well as between them. While America has made progress in issues of race over the past decades, discrimination on the basis of color continues to be a constant and often unremarked part of life. In Color Matters, Kimberly Jade Norwood has collected the most up-to-date research on this insidious form of discrimination, including perspectives from the disciplines of history, law, sociology, and psychology. Anchored with historical chapters that show how the influence and legacy of slavery have shaped the treatment of skin color in American society, the contributors to this volume bring to light the ways in which colorism affects us all--influencing what we wear, who we see on television, and even which child we might pick to adopt. Sure to be an eye-opening collection for anyone curious about how race and color continue to affect society, Color Matters provides students of race in America with wide-ranging overview of a crucial topic.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Stephen H. Norwood has written the first systematic study of the American far left's role in both propagating and combating antisemitism. This book covers Communists from 1920 onward, Trotskyists, the New Left and its black nationalist allies, and the contemporary remnants of the New Left. Professor Norwood analyzes the deficiencies of the American far left's explanations of Nazism and the Holocaust. He explores far left approaches to militant Islam, from condemnation of its fierce antisemitism in the 1930s to recent apologies for jihad. Norwood discusses the far left's use of long-standing theological and economic antisemitic stereotypes that the far right also embraced. The study analyzes the far left's antipathy to Jewish culture, as well as its occasional efforts to promote it. He considers how early Marxist and Bolshevik paradigms continued to shape American far left views of Jewish identity, Zionism, Israel, and antisemitism.

Book excerpt: The year 1997 marks the 125th anniversary of the town of Norwood, which was historically composed of the villages of Tiot, South Dedham, The Hook, Swedeville, The Ward, Cork City, Dublin, South Norwood, Morse Hill, Christian Hill, Westover, and Ellis. The Norwood Historical Society--founded at the very beginning of the twentieth century--has served as a repository of images from all these communities, and it is with great pride that the society offers the enclosed selections from its photographic archives in this timely publication. Many of the images in this collection, which chronicles the community's development from a rural village through the industrial and technological eras, have never before been published. The glass-plate negatives on which they were preserved were only recently discovered in the society's attic. Some images are attributed to the famous Norwood photographer Fred Holland Day, whose interest in the history of his hometown and passion for the art of photography provided the inspiration for this book. All of the images work together to illustrate a way of life now long forgotten, and to document the existence of historical sites, some of which remain standing today and others of which have succumbed to the ravages of time.

Book excerpt: The broad sweep of environmental and ecological history has until now been written and understood in predominantly male terms. In Made From This Earth, Vera Norwood explores the relationship of women to the natural environment through the work of writers, illustrators, landscape and garden designers, ornithologists, botanists, biologists, and conservationists. Norwood begins by showing that the study and promotion of botany was an activity deemed appropriate for women in the early 1800s. After highlighting the work of nineteenth-century scientific illustrators and garden designers, she focuses on nature's advocates such as Rachel Carson and Dian Fossey who differed strongly with men on both women's "nature" and the value of the natural world. These women challenged the dominant, male-controlled ideologies, often framing their critique with reference to values arising from the female experience. Norwood concludes with an analysis of the utopian solutions posed by ecofeminists, the most recent group of women to contest men over the meaning and value of nature.

Norwood and Captain Sean Gray discuss how fireground strategy and tactics have evolved in light of fire research conducted around the world. They discuss the fire tetrahedron and how fuel, heat, and air all affect a fire’s growth or extinguishment. Gray and Norwood take the lessons learned from the research as well as their general knowledge of the fireground to illustrate safer and more effective ways to operate on the fireground. They discuss how to apply this new understanding of fire behavior to two of the fire service’s most important tasks: search and fire attack. This book is an important resource for anyone wanting to put new fire dynamics research to action. You will learn: --How firefighting activities affect the fire tetrahedron --To stay safe while working in the flow path on the fireground --Search methods that isolate the firefighter and victim --Fire attack methods that minimize the air fed to the fire --Incident command size up and decision making

Book excerpt: The term "judoka" refers to one who does judo, the modern martial art with origins in 19th century Japan, a fighting art with a particular emphasis on the use of an opponent's own strengths to effect his defeat. This book is an account of the adventures of such a man, a judoka, but it is not just about this man, or the martial art he practices. Rather, it is about the "way" of judo, as both a fighting art and an approach to living ("a way"), and what this way might be able to tell us about who we are and who we might choose to become. The book does not prescribe "a way" for others to follow; that is, it does not simply offer advice about what to believe or how to behave, or point out the faults in other ways of being. It simply describes the way of one particular man, with commentary explaining, or rather reasoning through, the choices he has made, with the story presenting the consequences that these choices have for him. Reviews for the 1st edition: "This extraordinary little novella is reminiscent of Castaneda but far more intelligible." -Alan Watts "His direct writing about judo is clear and quietly restrained, hard to match in the literature of the subject." -New York Times

Book excerpt: The Norwood Nanny Chronicles begin . . . When American orphan, Bree, arrives at Norwood College—the elite English training ground of nannies to the world’s rich and powerful—she knows that making it through the first year to land a spot in the coveted certificate program is the key to her future. She also knows she can’t go it alone, bonding quickly with her groupmates: an errant (and broke) nobleman, son of one of England’s oldest families; the ambitious and whip-smart daughter of a self-made immigrant; and the ditzy, husband-hunting daughter of a disgraced playboy aristocrat. What none of them realize is that there is more to Norwood than meets the eye: the school itself may unlock the secrets of Bree’s own shadowy past, and the classmates’ very lives will depend on their ability to work together to meet the dangers ahead.
