Book excerpt: Combining a freeze protection method with fail-safe, freeze-tolerant cross-linked polyethylene (PEX) piping may provide a means to significantly extend the market northward for passive solar water heaters. Stress-strain data on PEX piping materials indicate that the 3.5% hoop strain from uniform freezing is likely tolerable for many cycles, but data are not definitive because it is not clear where permanent deformation starts occurring. Four PEX piping systems were freeze-thaw-cycled ~450 times. One brand showed no freeze tolerance, whereas two other brands appear freeze-tolerant, with no bursts in lengths greater than 7" or less than 2". Two geometries were identified that promote nonuniform freezing and that should be avoided: 1) nonuniform insulation increasing from ends toward the middle of the pipe in longer sections; and 2) pipes of ~4" in length with metal connectors on both ends. All metallic fittings have survived, but several polymer fittings broke and should be avoided when freeze-tolerance is desired. Further testing and analysis is needed to better understand the length dependence of freeze bursting and effects of piping aging, and field testing should proceed cautiously.

Book excerpt: With the goal of extending the geographical market for passive solar water heaters northward, a room-air natural convection loop (NCL) was investigated for providing freeze protection for supply/return pipes carrying pressurized domestic water through unconditioned space. An NCL model was developed based upon balancing buoyancy and friction in the loop. Calibration factors (Cfric, Cht-trsf) were introduced to scale calculations and account for un-modeled details and correlation bias. An NCL prototype was constructed with 2", 4", and 8" diameters. Least-square regression on data from the 4" diameter duct yielded (Cfric, Cht-trsf) = (2.05, 1.8). The calibrated model was used to provide site-specific design guidance, and to estimate energy losses with and without a thermostatic control to stop flow whenever Tamb> 0 °C.

Book excerpt: The feasibility of building a freeze-tolerant absorber for a solar water heater out of carbon-black-reinforced crosslinked polyethylene has been explored. Ten-foot tube specimens made from various crosslinked polyethylene formulations were filled with water at various pressures, and then placed into a deep freeze, then thawed and frozen again for 100 freeze-thaw cycles, or until the tube specimen failed. Tube diameters were measured before and after each freezing to determine how much distention the freezing caused, and how much permanent distention was caused by the strains of repeated freezings. Five tube specimens containing water at as high as 80 psi survived 100 freeze-thaw cycles. Also, a flat plate collector was fabricated using as absorber surface a single 400 ft tube of carbon-black-reinforced crosslinked polyethylene in the form of a flat spiral coil and this collector was tested for performance at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory. The performance test indicates that the absorbancy of such a flat spiral coil to solar radiation is similar to typical black surfaces used on solar absorbers. Thus, it does seem very feasible that domestic water can be directly heated in a solar collector having an absorber made from crosslinked polyethylene, and that this collector can safely withstand at least 100 freeze-thaw cycles.

Book excerpt: Ecohouse is an exciting and timely text that tells you how to design low energy, environmentally friendly buildings today. It also provides the foundations for building design in a warming world, and stepping stones towards the zero-carbon emission buildings of tomorrow. Sue Roaf is famed for her approach to design and her awareness of energy efficiency. Here she reveals the concepts, structures and techniques that lie behind the realization of her ideals. By using her own house as a case-study Roaf guides the reader through the ideas for energy efficient design or 'eco design'. This guide to the ecohouse also explores 21 case-studies from around the world, from Norway and Sweden to India and Japan, Argentina and Mexico. Chapters by Christopher Day, Katerine Bohn and Andre Viljoen on ecological building materials and methods and a contribution by Robert and Brenda Vale - all experts in this field Ecohouse has a regularly updated companion web site providing further information on all issues relating to Ecohouse and eco design. Book excerpt: Air Force Handbook 10-644 Survival Evasion Resistance Escape (SERE) Operations 27 March 2017 This handbook describes the various environmental conditions affecting human survival, and describes isolated personnel (IP) activities necessary to survive during successful evasion or isolating events leading to successful recovery. It is the fundamental reference document providing guidance for any USAF service member who has the potential to become isolated; deviations require sound judgment and careful consideration. This publication provides considerations to be used in planning and execution for effective mission accomplishment of formal USAF Survival, Evasion, Resistance, and Escape (SERE) training, environmentally specific SERE training, and combat survival continuation training programs. The tactics, techniques, and procedures in this publication are recognized best practices presenting a solid foundation to assist USAF service members to maintain life and return with honor from isolating events.

Book excerpt: Crop production in greenhouses is a growing industry, especially in mild climates, and is very important for the population as a source of income and clean, fresh food. Greenhouses create optimal climate conditions for crop growth and protect crops from outside pests. At the same time greenhouse production increases water use efficiency and makes integrated production and protection (IPP) possible. This book provides technical instructions for practice (what to do and what not to do) and gives answers to the question: How to produce more clean crops and better quality with less water, less land and less pesticide. Suitable greenhouse constructions and their design, adapted to local climates in subtropical, tropical and arid regions and infrastructure conditions are presented. The necessary climate control measures - light transmittance, ventilation, cooling, heating, and CO2 enrichment - and physical measures for pest control, as well as methods for using solar energy to desalinate salty water are described. The results of theoretical research are transferred into methods for practical use, so that readers are equipped to solve their problems in practice as well as to get stimulation for further research and development.
