Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Art of Masonry in Britain MY object in the following pages has been to describe briefly the origin and development of the art and craft of masonry in Britain, especially during the earlier years of its history. Volumes innumerable dealing with the history of architecture (as distinct from masonry) are in circulation. Especially is this the case with the period of the Renaissance, including the era covered by the famous works of Inigo Jones, Christopher Wren, and their contemporaries and successors. Pre cisely for that reason this remarkable period in the history of British architecture has, in this volume, been dealt with more briefly than its importance would otherwise warrant. My purpose has rather been to deal with the social life and work of British masons during that period when architecture had not yet developed into a distinct calling - when the master masons of the guild designed as well as superintended the work of their fellow-craftsmen. Moreover, I have sought to relate the history of masonry from the point of view of the artificer and craftsman rather than from the more theoretic standpoint of the architect or designer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin and History of an Old Masonic Lodge, "the Caveac," No. 176, of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of England In this case the accident was a curious one. As First Principal of the Caveae Chapter I had the privilege of exailting our Brother Colonel Green Thompson of the Caveae Lodge. I had ascertained when making some researches into the History of Royal Arch Masonry that the fourth actual Warrant granted to a Chapter was conferred on the Chapter of the Royal I'nniskilling Dragoons at York, and dated 3rd October, 1770. In proposing the health of our Companion at the Banquet I mentioned this fact as interesting to one who had lately commanded this Regiment. Companion Green Thompson asked me afterwards to obtain if possible some further facts relating to the Masonic traditions of the Regiment, as he was shortlv dining with their colonel-ih-chief, His Royal Highness the Duke of Connaught, and would like to be in 11 position to refer to the matter. I promised to do so and of course visited the Grand Lodge Library. There, with the kind aid of Brother Sadler, some facts of interest were gathered together. Looking through one of the Indexesfor the word Cavah'y I came. Across the wor-d Caveae. Ithought that it referred to our present Lodge, but on looking further I 1'ou-md thati had got the wrong index, and this one related to ancient meeting places of Masonic Lodges. Thereupon followed further researches, the results of which are embodied in this little Book. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Synopsis The Genesis of Freemasonry by : David Harrison
Download or read book The Genesis of Freemasonry written by David Harrison and published by Lewis Masonic Pub. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a revealing but thoroughly enjoyable journey through the intricate history of English Freemasonry. Historian Dr. David Harrison reconstructs the hidden history of the movement, tracing its roots through a mixture of mediaeval guild societies, alchemy and necromancy. He examines the earliest known Freemasons and their obsessions with Solomon’s Temple, alchemy, and prophecy, to the formation of the Grand Lodge in London, which in turn led to rebellions within the Craft throughout England. Harrison also analyzes the role of French immigrant, Dr Jean Theophilus Desaguliers in the development of English Freemasonry, focusing on his involvement with the formation of the mysterious modern Masonic ritual. All Freemasons and more general readers will find much of interest in this fascinating exploration of the very beginnings of Freemasonry, still one of the most mysterious brotherhoods in the world.

Download or read book Dilettanti written by Bruce Redford and published by Getty Publications. This book was released on 2008-08-07 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruce Redford re-creates the vibrant culture of connoisseurship in Enlightenment England by investigating the multifaceted activities and achievements of the Society of Dilettani. Elegantly and wittily he dissects the British connoisseurs whose expeditions, collections, and publications laid the groundwork for the Neoclassical revival and for the scholarly study of Graeco-Roman antiquity. After the foundation of the society in 1732, the Dilettani commissioned portraits of the members. Including a striking group of mock-classical and mock-religious representations, these portraits were painted by George Knapton, Sir Joshua Reynolds, and Sir Thomas Lawrence. During the second half of the century, the society’s expeditions to the Levant yielded a series of pioneering architectural folios, beginning with the first volume The Antiquities of Athens in 1762. These monumental volumes aspired to empirical exactitude in text and image alike. They prepared the way for Specimens of Antient Sculpture (1809), which combines the didactic (detailed investigations into technique, condition, restoration, and provenance) with the connoisseurial (plates that bring the illustration of ancient sculpture to new artistic heights). The Society of Dilettanti’s projects and publications exemplify the Enlightenment ideal of the gentleman amateur, which is linked in turn to a culture of wide-ranging curiosity.
