Book excerpt: Although it was originally intended to provide the USAF with a lightweight fighter, in the end the Northrop F-5 had rather a marginal career in the United States, which used it mainly for training pilots in aerial combat. On the other hand it was a real success in the export market, with more than twenty countries around the world choosing this little effective twin-engined fighter which above all was cheap, particularly when it was partly subsidized by the United States. Its success continued with the improved version, the Tiger II, so much so that in all more than 2600 examples of all versions of the F-5 came of the production lines with a few of them still flying nowadays in some air forces, thanks to the various update programs which have permitted air forces to envisage prolonging their use until 2015-20.

Iran was one of its major export customers, yet the long and often violent history of deployment of the F-5 in that country has largely escaped attention of historians. No less than 309 aircraft of five major variants of the jet - the F-5A, F-5B, RF-5A, F-5E and F-5F - have provided the backbone of the front line strength of the Iranian Air Force since the mid 1960s. Additional examples were clandestinely purchased from Ethiopia and Vietnam in the 1980s. The type bore the brunt of combat operations during the long war with Iraq, 1980-1988, and remains a mainstay of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force as of today. Book excerpt: With Ethiopia in disarray following a period of severe internal unrest and the spread of insurgencies in Eritrea and Tigray, Ethiopia and its armed forces should have offered little opposition to well-equipped Somali armed forces which were unleashed to capture Ogaden, in July 1977. However, excellently trained pilots of the Ethiopian Air Force took full advantage of their US-made equipment, primarily their few brand-new Northrop F-5E Tiger II fighter-bombers, to take the fight to their opponents, win air superiority over the battlefield, and thus have their hands free to interdict the Somali supply links to stop the invasion cold. This air victory practically sealed the fate of the Somali juggernaut in Ogaden, especially so once Ethiopia convinced Cuba and the Soviet Bloc to support her instead of Somalia. In a fit of pique, Somalia forced all Soviet advisers to leave the country. Already bitter over similar experiences in Egypt in 1972, Moscow's revenge was designed as a clear message: nobody was to treat her in such fashion again. The USSR subsequently launched an air bridge to Ethiopia, unique and unprecedented in its extension and importance, delivering huge quantities of armament and equipment necessary for the Ethiopians to reconquer Ogaden, and beyond. In turn Somalia asked the USA for help and thus occurred an unprecedented switch of Cold War alliances. This volume details the history and training of both Ethiopian and Somali air forces, their equipment and training, tactics used and kills claimed, against the backdrop of the flow of the Ogaden war. It explains in detail, supported by over 100 contemporary and exclusive photographs, maps and color profiles, how the Ethiopian Air Force won the decisive victory in the air by expertly deploying the F-5Es - unequaled in maneuverability, small size and powerful armament - to practically destroy the Somali Air Force and its MiG-17s and MiG-21s.

In twenty-four pages, it covers details of its construction and service with the FACh. This F-5E operated for 34 years with the Group of Aviation No. 7 at Cerro Moreno Air Base in Antofagasta, facing crises with Argentina in 1978 and 1982. In the mid-1990s, it was modified to the Tigre III standard at ENAER by Israeli IAI technicians and Chilean technicians. In 1997, it gained the capability for in-flight refueling by specialists from the American factory Tiger Century. At the end of 1998, it participated in the deployment of Group No. 7 to the United States for the Red Flag Exercise. In 2010, it was transferred along with the rest of the F-5E/F fleet to Group No. 12, operating at Chabunco Air Base in Punta Arenas. It is currently still in service, having reached the milestone of 60,000 flight hours for the F-5 material in the FACh in 2016.
