Book excerpt: The Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division initiated a northern leopard frog reintroduction program in 1998. The goal of the project was to re-establish leopard frogs in historically occupied habitats of the upper Red Deer and North Saskatchewan River drainage basins. Alberta Fish and Wildlife Division initiated the Magrath project in 2002. This final report describes the research methods and results of the project, evaluates the project, and suggests management recommendations.

Book Synopsis Alberta Northern Leopard Frog Recovery Plan, 2005-2010 by : Alberta. Fish and Wildlife Division

This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The northern leopard frog (Rana pipiens) is a medium-sized frog with powerful hind legs and extensively webbed hind feet that are well adapted for jumping and swimming. In February 2004, the Minister of Alberta Sustainable Resource Development maintained the listing of the northern leopard frog as threatened under Alberta's Wildlife Act. The Alberta Northern Leopard Frog Recovery team prepared this plan to guide the management of this threatened species over a 5 year period. The ultimate goal of this initiative is to achieve well-distributed, self-sustaining populations of leopard frogs throughout their historical range in Alberta. A long-term objective (>25 years) is to ensure that there are at least 2 self-sustaining populations of northern leopard frogs in each subdrainage of all major river drainages in southern Alberta. During the life of this plan, the Team aims to protect known sites from anthropogenic threats, improve knowledge of northern leopard frog populations in the province, reintroduce frogs to southern Alberta, increase awareness of the species and its conservation, and monitor the success of reintroduction efforts.

Book Synopsis Guidelines for reintroductions and other conservation translocations by : Reintroduction and invasive species specialist groups' taskforce on moving plants and animals for conservation purposes
Download or read book Guidelines for reintroductions and other conservation translocations written by Reintroduction and invasive species specialist groups' taskforce on moving plants and animals for conservation purposes and published by IUCN. This book was released on 2013 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "As the world's biodiversity faces the incessant threats of habitat loss, invasive species and climate change, there is an increasing need to consider more direct conservation interventions. Humans have moved organisms between sites for their own purposes for millennia, and this has yielded benefits for human kind, but in some cases has led to disastrous impacts. In response to this complex aspect of conservation management, the IUCN Species Survival Commission (SSC) Reintroduction Specialist Group (RSG) and Invasive Species Specialist Group (ISSG) have revised and published the IUCN 'Guidelines for Reintroductions and Other Conservation Translocations'"--Website.
Book Synopsis Amphibian Conservation by : Rebecca K. Smith
Download or read book Amphibian Conservation written by Rebecca K. Smith and published by Pelagic Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-05-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibian Conservation is the fourth in the series of Synopses of Conservation Evidence, linked to the online resource www.ConservationEvidence.com. This synopsis is part of the Conservation Evidence project and provides a useful resource for conservationists. It forms part of a series designed to promote a more evidence-based approach to biodiversity conservation. Others in the series include bee, bird, farmland and bat conservation and many others are in preparation. Approximately 32% of the 7,164+ amphibian species are currently threatened with extinction and at least 43% of species are declining. Despite this, until recently amphibians and their conservation had received little attention. Although work is now being carried out to conserve many species, often it is not adequately documented. This book brings together and summarises the available scientific evidence and experience relevant to the practical conservation of amphibians. The authors consulted an international group of amphibian experts and conservationists to produce a thorough summary of what is known, or not known, about the effectiveness of amphibian conservation actions across the world. "The book is packed with literature summaries and citations; a veritable information goldmine for graduate students and researchers. It also admirably provides decision makers with a well-researched resource of proven interventions that can be employed to stem/reverse the decline of amphibian populations." -John G Palis, Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society
Book Synopsis Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands by : Serra J. Hoagland
Download or read book Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands written by Serra J. Hoagland and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2023-05-23 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This groundbreaking book brings together Native American and Indigenous scholars, wildlife managers, legal experts, and conservationists from dozens of tribes to share their wildlife stewardship philosophies, histories, principles, and practices. Tribes have jurisdiction over some of the healthiest wild areas in North America, collectively managing over 56 million acres of land. This is no accident: in addition to a deep reverence for the land and a strong history of environmental stewardship, Native peoples implement some of the best fish and wildlife preservation and management practices on the continent. Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands is the first comprehensive resource dedicated to the voices and expertise of Native scholars and wildlife professionals. In its pages, nearly one hundred Native and non-native wildlife conservationists, managers, and their collaborators share lessons to guide wildlife professionals in how best to incorporate native methods and how to work effectively with tribal stakeholders. The authors cover topics that include: • Guidelines for conducting research on tribal lands • Traditional ecological knowledge-based management models • The cultural and ecological importance of key species • Legal battles for treaty rights, management authority, and funding • First foods and food sovereignty • Fisheries and migratory bird management • Tribal perspectives on the Endangered Species Act • A history of modern fish and wildlife management on tribal lands The content of this book is not limited to the invaluable reports of research findings, explications of methodologies, and case studies. Capturing oral histories and spiritual knowledge through interviews with tribal leaders and the work of Native artists and writers honors the holistic awareness of the land offered to readers of this unique volume. Ultimately, the contributors to Wildlife Stewardship on Tribal Lands demonstrate how tribal practices are pivotal guideposts for those seeking to protect and harness our natural resources in ways that can help reverse grievous biodiversity losses and ensure the health of our environment for future generations.
