Download or read book Nordeast Minneapolis written by Holly Day and published by Brief History. This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What began as the boom site for the mid-nineteenth-century Upper Midwest lumber industry quickly grew into the town of St. Anthony. In 1872, St. Anthony was annexed by its neighbor, Minneapolis, but the area retained its identity as Northeast Minneapolis, or "Nordeast" to future residents. Northeast was an industrial hub that attracted immigrant labor from Eastern Europe and beyond. Because of its diverse labor and cultural institutions and communities, it grew and prospered despite the challenges presented by Prohibition, the Great Depression and World War II. Today, Nordeast embraces its status as a neighborhood where art galleries, independent theaters, live music venues, world-class ethnic restaurants, taprooms and historic churches all exist within mere blocks of one another."--Publishers' website.

Book excerpt: This study investigated six hypotheses concerning the development of an ethnic community and intra-urban migration in Minneapolis from 1905 to 1945; (1) Although a Polish ethnic core area could be identified, provincial clustering was not sharply defined within that group. (2) The 'port of entry' function grew with the community and was not bound to the area of transient housing; (3) The length of first generation move was more closely related to the expansion of Minneapolis and its economy than to the length of time since arrival; (4) It cannot categorically be stated that second generation individuals are more mobile than first generation members. Important considerations are the definition of mobility used and the age structure of each generation; and (5) More Polish moves were explained by within-group information flows than by Adams' wedge-shaped mental map notion. Stability, not mobility, was the keynote of Polish residential choice.

Download or read book A History Lover's Guide to Minneapolis written by Sherman Wick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019-12-02 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Minneapolis began at the Falls of St. Anthony, the sole waterfall on the Mississippi River. The cataract, the great hydrological engine, propelled the city's economic growth and physical expansion, and two distinct municipal identities emerged. A city of seasons, Minneapolis celebrates winter flurries and chills with ice skating and hot chocolate at the annual Holidazzle Festival. In the sultry midsummer heat, the Aquatennial brings swimmers and boating enthusiasts to the Chain of Lakes and the river. Landmarks, too, define the topography-Spoonbridge and Cherry, the Stone Arch and Hennepin Avenue Bridges, the Foshay Tower and the IDS Center. Join local authors Sherman Wick and Holly Day on a trip beyond the typical guidebook as they explore the architecture, parks and historical figures of the Mill City.
