Book excerpt: In 2002, North Korea passed market liberalization reforms that allowed market forces to determine food prices. In the years to follow, the number of North Korean defectors arriving in South Korea rose considerably, and the number of female defectors skyrocketed. This paper, which appears in North Korean Review, Vol. 12, No. 2 (Fall 2016), investigates the increase in female defectors from North Korea to South Korea. It uses satellite imagery to measure activity in North Korean markets, and demonstrates a correlation between night-time lights emitted by a black market in Sinuiju and female defection to South Korea through China. It concludes that the increase in North Korean female defectors is related to women's higher mobility, which is a benefit of their leading role in North Korean markets.

Established with Soviet assistance in the mid to late 1940s and modeled on the Soviet secret police apparatus, North Korea's internal security agencies rely on constant surveillance, a network of informants in every neighborhood, and the threat of punishment in North Korea's notorious prison camps to ensure the Kim regime's total control. The security agencies play a primary role in restricting the flow of information and ensuring strict ideological conformity through harsh surveillance and coercion. North Koreans must participate in self-criticism sessions or face punishment, even time in a political prison camp. State security agents conduct routine checks to ensure that radio sets remain perpetually tuned to the state frequency, and '109 squads' roam border towns at night, arresting smugglers and confiscating South Korean TV shows and dramas that have entered the country via portable media storage devices. Greater awareness of how it operates is essential to understanding how the Kim regime remains in power.

He debunks the World Bank's dollar-a-day methodology for calculating poverty, arguing that the proliferation of global supply chains is based on the labour of impoverished women workers and environmental ruin. Development theories – from neoliberal to statist and Marxist – are revealed as justifying and promoting labouring class exploitation despite their pro-poor rhetoric.
