This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numberless stories of the little Ancient People of England’s West Country of Cornwall and Devon used to be told. In olden times cottagers often repeated to each other on winter evenings as they sat round the peat fires, and some of these Enys Tregarthen has retold 13 of the most enduring in this illustrated volume. The Legends in this volume are: The Adventures of a Piskey in Search of his Laugh The Legend of the Padstow Doombar The Little Cake-bird The Impounded Crows The Piskeys’ Revenge The Old Sky Woman Reefy, Reefy Rum The Little Horses and Horsemen of Padstow How Jan Brewer was Piskey-laden The Small People’s Fair The Piskeys who did Aunt Betsy’s Work The Piskeys who Carried their Beds The Fairy Whirlwind Piskeys, or Pixies, danced in their rings on many a cliff and wild moor on moonlit nights in North and East Cornwall. Fairy horsemen, known locally as night-riders, used to steal horses from farmers’ stables and ride them over the moors untill daybreak, when they left them exhausted, and to find their own way back to their stalls. The legends about the Little People are very old, and some assert to-day that the tales about the Piskeys are tales of a Pigmy race who inhabited Cornwall in the Neolithic Period, and that they are answerable for most of the legends of our Cornish fairies. If this be so, the older stories are legends of the little Stone Men. The West Country legends of the Little People are numerous. Some of them are very fragmentary; but they are none they are hugely entertaining and give an insight into the world of the little Ancient People, but they also show how strongly the Cornish peasantry once believed in them, as perhaps they still do. For, strange as it may seem in these matter-of-fact days, there are people still living who not only hold that there are Piskeys, but say they have actually seen them! These stories are given to the world in the hope that many besides children, for whom they are specially written, will find them interesting, and all lovers of folk-lore will be grateful to know that the iron horse and other modern inventions have not yet succeeded in driving away the Small People, nor in banishing the weird legends from our loved ‘land of haunting charm.’ 10% of the publisher’s profit from the sale from this book will be donated to Charities. ============= KEYWORDS: folklore, fairy, Tales, children, stories, bedtime, fables, illustrated, myths, legends, Adventures of a Piskey, Search, Laugh, Laughter, Legend, Padstow Doombar, Little, Cake-bird, Impounded, Crows, Piskeys’ Revenge, Old Sky Woman, Reefy, Rum, Little Horses, Horsemen of Padstow, Jan Brewer, Piskey-laden, Small People, Fair, Aunt Betsy, Work, carry, Carried, Beds, Fairy Whirlwind, Plymouth, Exeter, Torquay, Paignton, Exmouth, Barnstaple, Newton Abbot, Tiverton, Brixham, Bideford, Falmouth, Penzance, Camborne, Newquay, St Austell, Truro, Essa, Bodmin, bodmin moor, Rough Tor, Siblyback Lake, De Lank River, Garrow Tor, St Neots, King Arthur's Hall, Kilmar Tor, Hawk's Tor, Bude, St Austell, St Ives, Newquay, Jamaica Inn, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Fingle Bridge, Gara Point, Upper Plym, Trowlesworthy Tor, Heddon Valley, Mount St. Michael, St Michael's Mount, Marazion

This book was released on 2018-08-31 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description The myths and legends of England’s South West are full of what is called "local colour" and are richer in legend than any other part. The legends in this volume are infused with Celtic poetry and symbolism, inherent in the blood of the people of the West They afford us not only glimpses of ancient times and of old habits of thought and life, but also of the country itself at different times of the year. Stories like THE LOST LAND OF LYONESSE which for part of the Arthurian legends, home to Tristan, which is said to have sunk beneath the waves. However, almost 100 years ago, the Great Western Railway realised the value of these stories to travellers and has saved 12 of these precious remnants of old England and put them into print for us. The stories in this volume are: The Church the Devil Stole The Parson and the Clerk The Weaver of Dean Combe The Demon Who Helped Drake The Samson of Tavistock The Midnight Hunter of the Moor The Lost Land of Lyonesse The Piskie's Funeral The Spectre Coach St. Neot, the Pigmy Saint The Old Man of Cury The Hooting Carn The Padstow May Day Songs (Supplement) Because so many old stories were passed on orally by storytellers, with the advent of the industrial revolution printed books became more common and these stories became “lost” as less attended the once popular storytelling sessions. Then in 1870 the UK Education Act undertook to teach all children how to read and the art of storytelling all but died out altogether. This volume is sure to keep you enchanted for hours, if only not because of the content, but because of their quality, and will have you and your young wards coming back for more time-and-again. ============ KEYWORDS/TAGS: folklore, fairy tales, myths, legends, children’s stories, bedtime, fables, wonder tales, West country, myth, legend, land, , Abbey, ancient, awe-inspiring, beasts, beautiful, black, Bodmin, Brent, Buckfast, Buckfastleigh, Buckland, Carn, cave, centuries, Church, clerk , Cornish, Cornwall, Dartmoor, Dawlish, Dean, demon who helped drake , Devil, Devon, discover, Dodge, Drake, Exeter, gates, glorious, golf, grave, Great, headless, heart, Hooting, hooting carn , hound, journey, King, Knowles, lamentation, Land's End, Lanreath, Lelant, Lizard, Looe, lost land of lyonesse , love, magnificent, mermaid, midnight hunter of the moor , miners, moor, moorland, Mullion, neighbour, Neot, night, old man of cury, Bodmin Moor, Ordulph, padstow may day songs , Parson, Penzance, picturesque, piskie's funeral , pixie, Plymouth, prehistoric, priest, Queen, railway, Richard, rock, saint, samson of tavistock , sand-hills, Scillies, Isles of Scilly, sea, Seven, spectre coach , spectre-pack, spirit, st. neot the pigmy saint , stole , Stones, stupendous, Talland, Tavistock, Tavy, thieves, thunder, Tor, transform, weaver of dean combe , weird, West, wild, Wish, world

Book excerpt: This book is for all little boys and girls who love dolls and the stories of Raggedy Andy and Raggedy Ann. Herein you will find 12 stories of Raggedy Ann, written and illustrated by Johnny Gruelle. A companion to the Raggedy Andy Stories, it starts with Marcella visiting her Grandma, who had a quaint old house in the country. When she was there she liked to play up in the attic, for there were so many old forgotten things to find up there. One day, when she had grown tired of playing with the old spinning wheel, she curled up on an old horse-hair sofa to rest. Across the room in a dark corner she spotted an old barrel tucked under the eaves. Wondering what was in it, she set off to explore. Pulling rags and sewing off-cuts from the barrel, like a picture of a very pretty little girl with long curls tied tightly back from her forehead and wearing a long dress and queer pantaloons. And then out of the heap she pulled an old rag doll with only one shoe-button eye and a painted nose and a smiling mouth. Her dress was of soft material, blue with pretty little flowers and dots all over it. And so begins the adventures of Raggedy Ann…… These 12 Raggedy Ann stories are further brought to life with the 67 exquisite illustrations in colour also by Johnny Gruelle. The adventures are: Raggedy Ann Learns A Lesson Raggedy Ann And The Washing Raggedy Ann And The Kite Raggedy Ann Rescues Fido Raggedy Ann And The Painter Raggedy Ann's Trip On The River Raggedy Ann And The Strange Dolls Raggedy Ann And The Kittens Raggedy Ann And The Fairies' Gift Raggedy Ann And The Chickens Raggedy Ann And The Mouse Raggedy Ann's New Sisters This volume is sure to keep you and your young ones enchanted for hours, if not because of the quantity of the content, then their quality. Hewe we have a story about a boy named Wendell, who lives in Boston and likes fairy stories and baseball MUCH more than he likes fractions – but he does like reading and can be found in the children’s section of the library on most days. He even checked fairytale books out of the library and took them home with him. At night his parents had to take the books away from him as he was quite often found in the early hours of the morning reading a book under his covers with a torch. Then Wendell reads about the Wishing Stone. On making enquiries he finds it is no longer where his book said it would be and he starts to make enquiries as to its current whereabouts – and so starts Wendell’s adventure across Boston and into the land of Fairydom. Who the Fairy Rulers were and how they went about ruling. It will also tell who the Black Elves and Light Elves were and how the little people were also House-Helpers but how some of them were also Mischief-Makers. More often than not her father, a hard working doctor, calls her “Little Miss Muffet.” One day she is out in the garden playing make-believe. She aimlessly picked a dandelion and started to daydream about the times when she and her mother used to play “tell the time” when a voice beside her said “If you would be so good to tell me the right time.” Startled she dropped her “clock” and the little man in a vivid green suit picked it up and blew on it. “Five ‘o Clock” he said. Then out of his waistcoat pocket he took a key, which he fitted into the key-hole in the wall. A little stone door swung outwards in the wall, and the mannikin hesitated upon the threshold. “All things considered,” he remarked slowly, “and especially the green ribbons, I think I may do myself the pleasure of asking you to step in.” ……and so begins the adventures of Philomene in Fairyland. A place where she meets Sweet William, Master Mustardseed, Mermaids and Mermen, the Twin-Sisters and Queen Mab the cat. But what are all her adventures and experiences for? A Charming story with equally charming illustrations which enhance the narrative of a much-loved classic that tells the story of Prince Comical and his search for the diminutive princess who doesn’t have a name. To backtrack, the king and queen were childless, and a hasty promise was made by the King of the Fairies when a dwarf offers to provide him and his queen with a much-desired child. The condition was for her hand in marriage when she was old-enough. True to his promise, a child was soon conceived…… As a young girl, the princess lived a charmed life with loving parents, a doting fairy-Godmother and the birds of the forest as her companions. The dwarf reappeared at the appointed time only for the king to realise what he had promised. Princess Nobody is whisked away and hidden deep in the forest in order to protect her. At first several royal suitors seek her out but without success. Finally, Prince Comical succeeds in his search for the diminutive princess overcoming a number of obstacles in his attempt to find her. He woos her and they fall in love and marry (look for the cute image of the prince and princess kissing across the top of a mushroom!) Realising the princess’ predicament has not altered, the prince and princess make a departure and disappear after the marriage and escape the dwarf, and the story has a “happy ever after” ending. Elves, fairies, dwarfs and other denizens of fairyland will prove irresistible to anyone enchanted by the fantasy world of sprites and other little people. Written by Andrew Lang in 1884, the master folklorist, after he saw the illustrations of Richard Doyle. This volume contains 61 BnW and colour illustrations by Doyle. We invite you to curl up with your young ones with this unique sliver of Bedtime Fairy culture not seen in print for many-a-year, and immerse yourself and your children in the tales and fables of yesteryear. 10% of the profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities. ---------------------------- KEYWORDS: the story of princess nobody, fairy tales, folklore, myths, legends, children’s stories, bygone era, fairydom, fairy land, fairies, elves, pixies, pixy, pisky, piskies, classic stories, children’s bedtime stories, fables, Prince Comical, forest, king, queen, fairy-godmother, birds, friends, quest, seek, love, marry, kiss, niente, mushrooms, butterfly, butterflies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a sequel to “Princess White Flame” and is a children’s story about a curse placed on Princess White Flame of the Fire Fairies and how it was lifted. OF all the fairy countries in the world none is more wonderful or beautiful than the country where the Fire Fairies live. Into that land no fairies of the earth, or air, or water dare venture. They would be seared, or changed to ash or vapor. In the very heart of the Fire Country stands the palace of King Red Flame, the gleaming flame-coloured palace, the Palace of Burning Coals. Around it lies a wonderful garden, where paths wind away among great fields of fire lilies, and flame roses lift their heads, and the tall shining trees rustle in the wind with a sound like the whispering of the fire on the hearth. Here in this glowing country the good and happy fairies work and play, and serve their king as all good fairies should. But not all fairies in this land are good and happy. Beyond the glow of the roses and the lilies, beyond all sight of the glimmering trees, there lies another part of the country where the evil fairies live. Here are great Plains of Ash, and huge Caverns of Soot, and stretches of gloom in which the Shadow Witch comes and goes. Here the Imps of Darkness lurk, Dragons crouch, and Wizards dwell. Perhaps sometimes when you have looked into the Fireplace you have seen those dismal plains and darksome valleys. They lie away from the heart of the Fire, at the side of the Hearth, and between the flames and the heaps of ashes. In this story you will hear tell of Prince Radiance, and Princess White Flame who lived in the Fire Country and of many strange and wonderful adventures on which they journeyed on to reach, at last, a never-ending happiness.
