Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons Preached at First Presbyterian Church, Durham, North Carolina The sequel has it that the anchors held until daylight when the deciding to beach the ship; cut away the anchors and let her drive into an inlet and beach herself in shallow water. The sailors and passengers reached the shore and the ship was lost. Now it is the sentence about the anchors that has a timely message for us. For in our time of storm and night and darkness that is what we need - strong anchors that will hold until the day breaks and the storm spends itself. John McNeill, Vol. 1 I should like at the outset to say that it is my desire in dealing with this simple village idyll to get as far away as possible from the unhappy discussion that has been started here to this effect: Was Martha really uncon verted? Does the Lord mean to say at the end of the narrative, or does He mean to suggest, that only one of these sisters had really found the one thing needful, while the other had not? I think the better way will be for us to take the story as it comes, and try to gather what we can from the actors in it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Plain Sermons, Vol. 7 Such is the comfortable promise which the Church draws forth out of her divine stores, the Oracles of god, to support and cheer us now on the first Sunday of the new year. In early youth, men are not so greatly tempted to fear or to be disheartened; but, unless they learn where to find true and substantial comfort, and unless they can look to something whereon their hopes may rest securely, each new year is sure to bring them discouragement and fear. Young people, at first, expect to find this world full of enjoy ment; and whilst their hearts are yet comparatively pure, their hopes strong, and their minds vigorous, they too often persuade themselves there is no danger that they shall ever be led into any gross or grievous sin. But as years go on, we are all forced to learn, that this world is full of trouble and perplexity, rather than of ease and enjoy ment; that we must expect each year to bring its share of sorrow and disappointment, yes, and of temptation also and what is far worse, we find that these temptations prove to be greater than we are able to withstand. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Preachingbrings together narrative history and primary sources to provide the most comprehensive guide available to the story of the church's ministry of proclamation. Bringing together an impressive array of familiar and lesser-known figures, Edwards paints a detailed, compelling picture of what it has meant to preach the gospel. Pastors, scholars, and students of homiletics will find here many opportunities to enrich their understanding and practice of preaching. Volume 1, appearing in the print edition, contains Edwards's magisterial retelling of the story of Christian preaching's development from its Hellenistic and Jewish roots in the New Testament, through the late-twentieth century's discontent with outdated forms and emphasis on new modes of preaching such as narrative. Along the way the author introduces us to the complexities and contributions of preachers, both with whom we are already acquainted, and to whom we will be introduced here for the first time. Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Bernard, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, Rauschenbusch, Barth; all of their distinctive contributions receive careful attention. Yet lesser-known figures and developments also appear, from the ninth-century reform of preaching championed by Hrabanus Maurus, to the reference books developed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by the mendicant orders to assist their members' preaching, to Howell Harris and Daniel Rowlands, preachers of the eighteenth-century Welsh revival, to Helen Kenyon, speaking as a layperson at the 1950 Yale Beecher lectures about the view of preaching from the pew. Volume 2, contained on the enclosed CD-ROM, contains primary source material on preaching drawn from the entire scope of the church's twenty centuries. The author has written an introduction to each selection, placing it in its historical context and pointing to its particular contribution. Each chapter in Volume 2 is geared to its companion chapter in Volume 1's narrative history. Ecumenical in scope, fair-minded in presentation, appreciative of the contributions that all the branches of the church have made to the story of what it means to develop, deliver, and listen to a sermon, A History of Preachingwill be the definitive resource for anyone who wishes to preach or to understand preaching's role in living out the gospel. "...'This work is expected to be the standard text on preaching for the next 30 years,' says Ann K. Riggs, who staffs the NCC's Faith and Order Commission. Author Edwards, former professor of preaching at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, is co-moderator of the commission, which studies church-uniting and church-dividing issues. 'A History of Preaching is ecumenical in scope and will be relevant in all our churches; we all participate in this field,' says Riggs...." from EcuLink, Number 65, Winter 2004-2005 published by the National Council of Churches

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sermons for the Christian Year, Vol. 1 It was thought well to give so brilliant a student the benefit of a course at Rome, and so after his re turn from his holiday, he was sent by Bishop Grant to the venerable English College there to complete his ecclesiastical studies. Here he gained a reputa tion for high ability, and in due time took his Doc tor's degree. He was ordained deacon by Cardinal Patrizi, at St. John Lateran, in 1863, and priest on Holy Saturday, 1864. He said his first Mass in the Chapel of the English College on Easter Sunday. In September, 1863, during the summer vacation, he had made another long walking tour in the form of a pilgrimage to Loreto. He then Visited Assisi, Perugia, Bologna and even Milan, returning by Florence and Orvieto. On this occasion, too, he visited famous monastic sanctuaries of Vallombrosa and Camaldoli. In 1864 he received the Doctor's cap and ring from Father Perrone S. J., and in September left Rome for England. On this journey, he first went South, visiting Naples and Benevento, and making a pil grimage to the tomb of St. Benedict at Monte Cassino. He retraced his steps along the Adriatic Gulf to Ravenna, and thence by F errara, Padua and Venice, through the Austrian Tyrol to Munich, and so back to London. He was now placed on the Professorial staff of St. Edmund's College, where he remained four years. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. With refpeet to the latter, it hath been his principal aim to render himfelf intelligible to every reader. It is feared, that few will have patience to perufe it, to whom this would be the leading objeco tion. Were the Public entertained with romantic ideas of life, a defcription of feelings which Were never realized, or a hilto ry of the heart from charaeters that never had an exifience, fave in the warm imaginations'of writers far more attention might be expee'ted. The attempt might be applauded, as throwing light on the important fiudy of Man. But can a portrait of the Heart be more unworthy of attention, becaufe it is originally drawn by the finger of God? The present series are, indeed, comparatively of but a very ephemeral character, but they will be found to answer the term of Plain Sermons, and, it is to be hoped, may not be without their use in the present decayed condition of the Church.
