Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: North American Sport Horse Breeder This new reference work, directed to the breeder of sport horses, specifically those in North America, presents the breeder with a fresh way to evaluate equine genetics through the pedigree, a method to identify key individuals in the ancestry that can be dominance building candidates, and with instruction on how to use this information to construct the most advantageous mating. The application of these breeding principles is focused on the Olympic-style sport horse but is just as applicable to all other equine breeding endeavors. Sure to surprise many is the revelation of how long and how committed North Americans have been in creating and enjoying true sport horses. The history section identifies the untapped sport potential that resides in our usually ignored domestic breeds; many of them carry far more sport DNA than we see in the genetic spectrum of the currently popular European horse. Kathleen Hiney Kirsan You may say I am the least likely person to have written a book about sport horse breeding. I was not part of the horse culture in my younger years, and I did not even own a horse until I was 39. I was born in Boston and raised in its suburbs; I spent most of my adult life working in the construction industry. My entry into breeding began with a Thoroughbred mare that was a cull from the racetrack. I became intrigued with the names in her pedigree, and this then began my study of bloodlines and heredity. My passion coincided with the appearance of great works in the Thoroughbred industry that evaluated which pedigree patterns were producing winners. Because I understood genetics work the same in every equine, I applied the Thoroughbred industry's findings to my own program, which resulted in immediate improvements in my foals.

Book excerpt: LEGACY OF LEXINGTON Is the American Thoroughbred a sprint-only breed? Are only stamina-bred Thoroughbreds suitable for Olympic-style sport breeding? Is America new to international sport horse breeding? Are there any American Thoroughbred bloodlines that excel in show jumping, dressage, and eventing? You will find the answers to those questions and more in Legacy of Lexington, a book written expressly as a reference for the sport horse breeder in North America. This is also the story of Lexington, one of the greatest racehorses of all time, whose record as a stallion has never been bettered-a position he's held for over one hundred fifty years. This book will detail both how, contrary to the current dogma in sport horse circles, it is in America that breeders developed the definitive distance racehorse in the world, and also where you can find those bloodlines in the Thoroughbred and other American breeds. You will learn the story of what happened when our American horse traveled to Europe to compete in the mid-1800s, and how the excellence of Lexington's bloodline, his close relatives and his peers, threatened to overwhelm the British and European racing industry in the late 19th century with their devastating racing superiority. This shocking display of racing class and athleticism resulted in the British Jockey Club overreacting by banning the American Thoroughbred from the breed studbook and from breeding worldwide. You will also discover that the American sportsman has been fielding a successful international sport horse (Hunter-part TB) since the late 1800s. Here you will find why the modern American Thoroughbred is different from every other Thoroughbred breeding population, and how it came to be the highest rated in the world. It will show you the 'hidden' American bloodlines found in the best English, French, Italian, and German Thoroughbreds and Warmbloods, and also how and why unsoundness has become attached to contemporary bloodlines and what we as breeders can do about it; including explaining how you can apply Tesio Methods to bring back the soundness and athletic strength of our former breed of super horses to your sport product of today. Kathleen H. Kirsan The author, Kathleen Kirsan, has been involved with sport horse breeding since 1988 and has been writing on the subject since 2003. Driven by a deep interest in genetics and how it applies to sport horse performance, she has become a leader in pedigree evaluation and employing Tesio Methods to sport horse design. With a well-respected website, www.sport-horse-breeder.com, on the air, she is also frequently consulted by breeders and breed associations for her knowledge of bloodlines and equine history. Besides being a prolific author of well-read web articles, she has published writings for magazines and trade journals, as well as a book on the North American sport horse, its history, and its bloodlines: North American Sport Horse Breeder."

The seven main pedigree designs for building potency are each discussed with examples and information on the studies and sources. And six recent genetic studies that apply to sport horse breeding are presented from a breeder's point of view. The goal of the book is to provide a way for the breeder to build potency in the traits they need for their goals.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive guide to the warmblood horse discusses such topics as specific breeds, breeding aims and procedures, breed characteristics and traits, European breeding quality controls and the North American alternatives, the history of the breed, unique aspects of the warmblood and much more. 'Halfblood, warm-blut, demi-sang' -- their blood measures the same temperature as other horses, but the European Warmbloods are the sport horse supreme. Horses of German, Dutch, French, and Scandinavian backgrounds have earned the top prizes in international competitions - Olympic medals and World and National champions. And since the 1970's, European Warmbloods have impacted upon the American equestrian industry, winning both show ring and cross-country events. Sophisticated equestrians have long appreciated how European breeders have developed the art and science of producing outstanding sport horses. For hundreds of years, they have aimed to solidify a type. They are able to achieve consistent, predictable results, and they maintain high standards through rigid selections of breeding stock. This book, written especially for the North American enthusiast, is the most complete work on warmbloods available. Based on information from European and American ociations, and opinions of owners, breeders, and authorities on both sides of the Atlantic, this is a unique resource work for those involved with these marvelous horses.
