Book Synopsis The Spread of Modern Industry to the Periphery Since 1871 by : Kevin H. O'Rourke
Download or read book The Spread of Modern Industry to the Periphery Since 1871 written by Kevin H. O'Rourke and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 410 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an open access title available under the terms of a CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 International licence. It is free to read at Oxford Scholarship Online and offered as a free PDF download from OUP and selected open access locations. Ever since the Industrial Revolution of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, industrialization has been the key to modern economic growth. The fact that modern industry originated in Britain, and spread initially to north-western Europe and North America, implied a dramatic divergence in living standards between the industrial North (or West) and a non-industrial, or even de-industrializing, South (or Rest). This nineteenth-century divergence, which had profound economic, military, and geopolitical implications, has been studied in great detail by many economists and historians. Today, this divergence between the West and the Rest is visibly unraveling, as economies in Asia, Latin America and even sub-Saharan Africa converge on the rich economies of Europe and North America. This phenomenon, which is set to define the twenty-first century, both economically and politically, has also been the subject of a considerable amount of research. Less appreciated, however, are the deep historical roots of this convergence process, and in particular of the spread of modern industry to the global periphery. This volume fills this gap by providing a systematic, comparative, historical account of the spread of modern manufacturing beyond its traditional heartland, to Southern and Eastern Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Africa, and Latin America, or what we call the poor periphery. It identifies the timing of this convergence, finding that this was fastest in the interwar and post-World War II years, not the more recent miracle growth years. It also identifies which driving forces were common to all periphery countries, and which were not.

Book Synopsis Asian Development by : William E. James
Download or read book Asian Development written by William E. James and published by Univ of Wisconsin Press. This book was released on 1989 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the world's attention has been focused on the spectacular economic success of Japan and Korea, the less developed countries of Asia have often been neglected. Asian Development closes the gap. In nontechnical style and with minimal mathematics, it presents an in-depth perspective on the economic development of fourteen countries in East, Southeast, and South Asia. Asian Development is mainly a story of success. Though some problems remain, Asian countries have shown remarkable resilience in responding to sharp changes in the international economy--oil shocks, world recession and inflation, exchange-rate and interest-rate fluctuations, and rapid technological change. The authors conclude that their ability to adjust to changing external conditions is closely related to intelligent governmental policies. Looking back they comment: "In the past, growth of the United States and Japan pulled up the growth rates of the smaller economies in the region." Looking forward, they predict: "In the future, increasingly it will be the growth of the Asian developing countries that acts as a catalyst to growth in the more advanced economies."

Book Synopsis The High Commissioners by : Carl Bridge
Download or read book The High Commissioners written by Carl Bridge and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marks the centenary of the posting of the first Australian High Commissioner in London, so beginning what is today Australia's oldest diplomatic mission. In 1910, when Sir George Reid was appointed its first High Commissioner in London, Australia was a self-governing but not yet sovereign state and the Australian Governor-General remained the most important channel of communication between the Australian and United Kingdom governments until the late 1920s. The book traces the history of the office and in doing so illuminates the larger story of Australian-United Kingdom relations in the twentieth century, the evolution of Australia from British colony to sovereign state and the gradual transition of the United Kingdom from head of an empire to member of the European Union.

Book Synopsis The Eurosceptic's Handbook by : Michael Burrage
Download or read book The Eurosceptic's Handbook written by Michael Burrage and published by Basic Civitas Books. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brexit debate that has taken hold of the country is one of the defining issues of our time. The outcome of the EU referendum in June will have ramifications that will be felt for generations to come. But the discussion is curiously one-sided. The polls show that the British people are fairly evenly split between those who would stay and those who would leave - and very few would give the present arrangement a ringing endorsement. Yet all the resources of government and big business have been thrown behind an information campaign designed to ensure the UK remains a member of the EU at all costs. The Eurosceptic's Handbook tries to help rebalance the debate, and arm those with doubts about the EU with the counter-arguments they need to make an objective judgement. Michael Burrage, whose previous Civitas publications have earned praise for overturning the received wisdom about the EU's supposed trade benefits, here takes a broader look at the pros and cons of EU membership.Standing back from the spin and hyperbole of Project Fear, Burrage surveys the evidence from Britain's involvement with Brussels since it joined the European Economic Community in 1973.He exposes the flaws in the arguments that have been made along the way for Britain's continued membership. He lays bare the costs - financial and democratic - to every UK citizen of sticking with the European project. And he explains why, if Britain votes to leave, it will have nothing to fear - and much to gain.--
