Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Fauna But the time has not yet come for a satisfactory revision of the group, to attempt which at least specimens are requisite, collected so as to fully represent the seasonal phases of pelage obtaining at hundreds of more or less widely separated localities. These conditions are now realized to the fullest degree, for the number of specimens examined in the present revision exceeds The majority of these are contained in the extensive collection of the Biological Survey, which, under the direction of Dr. C. Hart Merriam, has been built up with special reference to the various life areas of North America, and without which no satisfactory study of this group would now be possible. In addition all the material in the more important public and private collections of America has been examined, and also important specimens belonging to Euro pean institutions, especially the British Museum. This material includes all the types, both of valid forms and of synonyms, known to be in existence. In almost all cases in which no types exist, good series of topotypes, or specimens from near. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Fauna: Nos. 41-48 Knowledge of the big bears is by no means complete and many years must pass before the last word on the subject will be written. Many bears now roaming the wilds will have to be killed and their skulls and skins sent to museums before their characters and variations will be fully understood and before it will be possible to construct accu rate maps of their ranges. Persons having the means and ambition to hunt big game may be assured that bears are still common in many parts of British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Alaska, and that much additional material is absolutely required to settle questions still in doubt. Among the localities from owhich specimens are greatly needed may be mentioned Lynn Canal and Lituya Bay, Alaska, and in fact the entire coast strip between Cross Sound and Yakutat Bay; the Cook Inlet and Susitna regions; the mountains between the Yukon and Tanana; the Endicott Range and other mountains between the Yukon and the Arctic coast all the way from Seward Peninsula to the alaska-yukon boundary; the Rocky Mountains of Canada, from British Columbia northward, including the sources of the Pelly, Macmillan, Stewart, and Porcupine Rivers; the Mackenzie River and Great Bear Lake region; the southwest corner of Yukon Territory; the western part of Alberta; and the interior of British Columbia. In the United States, skulls of adult males are much needed from all localities inhabited by grizzly bears, particularly in Colorado, Idaho, Montana, and Wyoming - including the Glacier and other National Park regions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Fauna, Vol. 24: A Biological Reconnaissance of the Base of the Alaska Peninsula The present report contains an account of a hasty trip made dur ing the latter part of the summer and fall of 1902 to the base of the Alaska Peninsula. Work was done on both coasts and in part of the interior. On account of the importance of the region as a meet ing ground of some of the life areas of Alaska, it was desired that more time be spent in the field, but the shortness of the season pre vented. Since it is not feasible at present to continue work in this region, it has been decided to record such results as were obtained. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Preservation of the Wild Animals of North America The National and Congressional movement for the preservation of the Sequoia in California represents a growth of intelligent sentiment. It is the same kind of sentiment which must be aroused, and aroused in time, to bring about Government legislation if we are to preserve our native ani mals. That which principally appeals to us in the Sequoia is its antiquity as a race, and the fact that California is its last refuge. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Animals a Popular Guide to the Mammals of North America, North of Mexico: With Intimate Biographies of the More Familiar Species N preparing the present volume the aim has been to produce I a work sufficiently free from technicalities to appeal to the general reader and at the same time to include such scientific information relative to our North American mammals as would be desired by one beginning their study. The key at the end of the volume will be found of service in identifying unfamiliar mammals, and includes certain characters omitted from the body of the book. As a guide to further study there has been appended a bibliography of the principal works on North American mammals. To many of these I would express my indebtedness, especially to the writings of Allen, Merriam, Miller, Bangs and Rhoads, and also my acknowledgments to the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia and Mr. Samuel N. Rhoads for the privi lege of studying the specimens contained in their collections. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Fauna, Vol. 23: Index Generum Mammalium, a List of the Genera and Families of Mammals; January 23, 1904 The present index, which differs materially from previous ones in containing much information besides the name, authority, and place of publication, was undertaken in connection with the systematic work on mammals carried on by the Biological Survey, in order to collect for convenient reference not only the names given in previous indexes, but also those which had been overlooked or which had been published since the appearance of these works. Its object is to bring together all the generic and subgen'eric names of mammals, both living and extinct, which have been proposed since 1758, and to furnish such data of a bibliographical nature as to facilitate finding when and where each name was published, and to what group it was applied. It gives, so far as possible for each name, (1) authority, (2) date of publication, (3) order and family, (4) reference to original place of publication, (5) important secondary references, (6) variations in spelling, (7) type or included species, (8) locality of type species, (9) indication of pre occupation, with cross reference to names, if any, proposed to replace them, (10) a statement (if published) of the part of extinct animals as the skeleton, skull, teeth, etc. - which constituted the type specimen. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Animal Guide: North American Wild Animals One really cannot go out with this book, as with the birds and owers, and make a study of the animals, as so few of them are to be seen, especially during the day. If we consult any Dictionary or Encyclopedia we find, generally, the name and brief description, with possibly a small illustration in black, of some European species which is very misleading. These colored illustrations are all of North Amer ican wild animals and we hope will aid in the identification to those who are looking for help along this line. Chas. K, reed.
