Book Synopsis Towards North American Monetary Union? by : Eric Helleiner
Download or read book Towards North American Monetary Union? written by Eric Helleiner and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2006 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many believe that Canada's deepening economic integration with the United States and the worldwide trend towards currency blocs will eventually lead to a North American monetary union. In the first detailed analysis of Canadian exchange rate politics, Eric Helleiner challenges this view.Helleiner finds little support in the US for the concessions that would be necessary to make a North American monetary union palatable in Canada. Comparing the US Federal Reserve and the European Monetary Union, he argues that Canada would exercise far less influence within a North American monetary union than individual countries do within the European community. He also analyses the seemingly paradoxical support of Quebec sovereignists for free trade and monetary union.Towards North American Monetary Union'explores Canada's unusually strong commitment throughout the twentieth century to a floating exchange rate for its national currency - a commitment that Heilleiner argues is likely to endure.

Book Synopsis The Currency of Empire by : Jonathan Barth
Download or read book The Currency of Empire written by Jonathan Barth and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Currency of Empire, Jonathan Barth explores the intersection of money and power in the early years of North American history, and he shows how the control of money informed English imperial action overseas. The export-oriented mercantile economy promoted by the English Crown, Barth argues, directed the plan for colonization, the regulation of colonial commerce, and the politics of empire. The imperial project required an orderly flow of gold and silver, and thus England's colonial regime required stringent monetary regulation. As Barth shows, money was also a flash point for resistance; many colonists acutely resented their subordinate economic station, desiring for their local economies a robust, secure, and uniform money supply. This placed them immediately at odds with the mercantilist laws of the empire and precipitated an imperial crisis in the 1670s, a full century before the Declaration of Independence. The Currency of Empire examines what were a series of explosive political conflicts in the seventeenth century and demonstrates how the struggle over monetary policy prefigured the patriot reaction to the Stamp Act and so-called Intolerable Acts on the eve of American independence. Book Synopsis Wampum and the Origins of American Money by : Marc Shell
Download or read book Wampum and the Origins of American Money written by Marc Shell and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wampum has become a synonym for money, and it is widely assumed that it served the same purposes as money among the Native Algonquians even after coming into contact with European colonists' money. But to equate wampum with money only matches one slippery term with another, as money itself was quite ill-defined in North America for decades during its colonization. In this stimulating and intriguing book, Marc Shell illuminates the context in which wampum was used by describing how money circulated in the colonial period and the early history of the United States. Wampum itself, generally tubular beads made from clam or conch shells, was hardly a primitive version of a coin or dollar bill, as it represented to both Native Americans and colonial Europeans a unique medium through which language, art, culture, and even conflict were negotiated. With irrepressible wit and erudition, Shell interweaves wampum's multiform functions and reveals wampum's undeniable influence on the cultural, political, and economic foundations of North America. Published in Association with the American Numismatic Society, New York, New York."

Book excerpt: The purpose of this commentary is to examine the following propositions: that a floating exchange rate is not serving Canada well within the progressively integrated North American Free Trade Agreement environment; that there are arguments for greater fixity in exchange rates; and that the longer-term objective of greater exchange rate fixity should be a common North American currency. The commentary also looks at some of the alternative approaches along the continuum from floating rates to monetary union, including pegged rates, fixed rates, currency boards, and dollarization.
Book Synopsis Monetary and Exchange Rate Arrangements for Nafta by : Mr.Tamim Bayoumi
Download or read book Monetary and Exchange Rate Arrangements for Nafta written by Mr.Tamim Bayoumi and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1993-03-01 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper considers the extent to which the North American Free Trade Area (NAFTA) meets the criteria for a common currency area. NAFTA is compared with the EC, a regional grouping for which initial plans for a monetary union are already in place. Most of the anticipated benefits from a monetary union in the EC apply with equal force to NAFTA. However, because the underlying disturbances are more diverse across members of NAFTA, the costs of abandoning the exchange rate instrument are likely to be higher. This is particularly true when NAFTA is compared to the EC’s continental core.

Book excerpt: North America, like Europe, is developing into a supernational free trade area. This raises the matter of whether the Americas should be reconsidering monetary arrangements similar to those being considered in Europe. This paper briefly discusses the pros and cons and the maintenance of separate national currencies, weighs these with reference to the similarities and differences between the European and North American cases, and concludes that the monetary status quo is the best option for North America.
