Book excerpt: "Norfolk Island is at the crossroads in relation to decisions that must be made about its future financial sustainability. By isolation, its internal revenue base is necessarily limited, and there is over reliance on its tourism industry which is facing increased competition from other tourist destinations. At the same time, there are increasing demands on government expenditure to provide adequate government services and ensure key infrastructure is maintained at acceptable levels. These competing pressures are significant and should not be underestimated. The Committee has examined Norfolk Island's internal revenue-raising options, and has also considered the ability of the Norfolk Island Government to increase expenditure for government services and asset replacement. It is clear that the challenge has become too great for the Norfolk Island Government alone to confront and resolve." -- from the Foreword, p. iii.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norfolk Island is a small island located in the southern Pacific Ocean, between New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is a self-governing territory of Australia, with its own unique culture and history. The island was first settled by Polynesian and Melanesian peoples thousands of years ago, but was later discovered by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1774. The island was subsequently used as a penal colony by the British government, and many of the present-day residents are descendants of the convicts and their jailers. Today, Norfolk Island is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning scenery, laid-back lifestyle, and rich history. Visitors can explore the island’s many historic sites, including the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is also home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, including the Norfolk Island pine, which only grows on the island. In addition, Norfolk Island has a thriving arts and crafts scene, with many local artists creating jewelry, pottery, and other handmade items.

Book excerpt: Over the past three decades, tourism has emerged as a major force in the global economy, with most countries, whether developed or developing, having increasing opportunities to participate, as both host and guest, in this socioeconomic phenomenon. Competition for a share of the tourism market has intensified as rapid tourism developments have been undertaken by various destinations in an attempt to reap those economic benefits from one of the world's leading industries. The growth in tourism has propelled significant changes in the way in which destinations are managed and marketed. The challenge for many small island destinations is how to become or remain competitive. It is against this background that destination marketing has assumed the critical role of ensuring that the destination lifecycle does not enter into a stage of saturation and decline, and the destination is able to adapt to the changing marketplace, seize opportunities and sustain its vitality. This book takes a holistic approach and considers marketing from a macro perspective, from the view of the destination.

A Book on Norfolk Island. A later colonial convict settlement began in 1825, when it was decided that a final place of punishment was needed for recidivists and other antisocial British subjects, such as Irish political prisoners. These were the dark days of the Island, both in terms of human cruelty and degradation. This period also marked the beginning of the decimation of the island's natural biota, as clearing for large-scale agriculture and ambitious building works began. This cruel era ended in 1855 with the removal of the last of the convicts, as deportation become less popular and other programs for the utilisation of convict labour became favoured.
