Is toponymy in small island communities affected by degrees of connection to larger neighbours such as a mainland? Are island (contact) languages and mainland languages different in how they are used in naming places? How can we conceptualise the human-human interface in the fieldwork situation when collecting placenames on islands? This book offers answers relevant to toponymists, linguists, island studies scholars, and anthropologists. It focuses on two island environments within Australia – Norfolk Island, South Pacific and Dudley Peninsula, Kangaroo Island, South Australia – and puts forward a number of novel findings relevant to Australian linguistics and the linguistics and toponymy of islands anywhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Norfolk Island is a small island located in the southern Pacific Ocean, between New Zealand and New Caledonia. It is a self-governing territory of Australia, with its own unique culture and history. The island was first settled by Polynesian and Melanesian peoples thousands of years ago, but was later discovered by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1774. The island was subsequently used as a penal colony by the British government, and many of the present-day residents are descendants of the convicts and their jailers. Today, Norfolk Island is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning scenery, laid-back lifestyle, and rich history. Visitors can explore the island’s many historic sites, including the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is also home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, including the Norfolk Island pine, which only grows on the island. In addition, Norfolk Island has a thriving arts and crafts scene, with many local artists creating jewelry, pottery, and other handmade items.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who has not heard of the mutiny on the Bounty? For two hundred years this event has fired the imagination of millions of people, countless books have been written on it, and five motion pictures—so far—dramitized it on the screen. This book is unique in the literature on the mutiny and is the first companion volume to the story. The first part, the Bounty Chronicle, gives a panoramic, yet detailed, month-by-month account of the events, starting before the Bounty’s departure and ending with Fletcher Christian’s death on Pitcairn Island. It even chronicles Captain Bligh’s second breadfruit expedition of which so many people are unaware. The second part of the book, the Bounty Encyclopedia, is full of all the exciting and fascinating details surrounding this great story.
Book Synopsis An Uneasy Relationship by : Maev O'Collins
Download or read book An Uneasy Relationship written by Maev O'Collins and published by ANU E Press. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The situation of Norfolk Island, as a territory of the Commonwealth of Australia, is one of the historical anomalies in governance, which has persisted since 1914. It reflects the direct historical linkages between the British Crown and those Norfolk Islanders who were descendants of Pitcairn Islanders of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. Yet, once Federation was in the wind, the British Government, against the expressed wishes of the Norfolk Island community, sought to divest itself of all responsibility for Norfolk Island. There is a curiously ‘Yes Minister’ quality about the negotiations which lead to the final take-over by Australia, and the appointment of the first Commonwealth Administrator of Norfolk Island. The direct involvement of Atlee Hunt, then Secretary of the Department of External Affairs, eventually ensured the appointment of Michael Vincent Murphy. In order to achieve this end, Hunt had to fend off other applicants who were busy ingratiating themselves with the Minister for External Affairs Patrick McMahon Glynn and the then Prime Minister Joseph Cook. This is essentially a study of the relationships between governors, politicians, public servants and community leaders during the years which followed the take-over of Norfolk Island, and of the struggle of one Norfolk Islander, Charles Chase Ray Nobbs, against Australian administrative authority.

This book was released on 2010-02-25 with total page 1530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique richly-illustrated account of the landforms and geology of the world’s coasts, presented in a country-by-country (state-by-state) sequence, assembles a vast amount of data and images of an endangered and increasingly populated and developed landform. An international panel of 138 coastal experts provides information on “what is where” on each sector of coast, together with explanations of the landforms, their evolution and the changes taking place on them. As well as providing details on the coastal features of each country (state or county) the compendium can be used to determine the extent of particular features along the world’s coasts and to investigate comparisons and contrasts between various world regions. With more than 1440 color illustrations and photos, it is particularly useful as a source of information prior to researching or just visiting a sector of coast. References are provided to the current literature on coastal evolution and coastline changes.
