A Book on Norfolk Island. A later colonial convict settlement began in 1825, when it was decided that a final place of punishment was needed for recidivists and other antisocial British subjects, such as Irish political prisoners. These were the dark days of the Island, both in terms of human cruelty and degradation. This period also marked the beginning of the decimation of the island's natural biota, as clearing for large-scale agriculture and ambitious building works began. This cruel era ended in 1855 with the removal of the last of the convicts, as deportation become less popular and other programs for the utilisation of convict labour became favoured.

It is a self-governing territory of Australia, with its own unique culture and history. The island was first settled by Polynesian and Melanesian peoples thousands of years ago, but was later discovered by British explorer Captain James Cook in 1774. The island was subsequently used as a penal colony by the British government, and many of the present-day residents are descendants of the convicts and their jailers. Today, Norfolk Island is a popular tourist destination, known for its stunning scenery, laid-back lifestyle, and rich history. Visitors can explore the island’s many historic sites, including the Kingston and Arthurs Vale Historic Area, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The island is also home to a variety of unique flora and fauna, including the Norfolk Island pine, which only grows on the island. In addition, Norfolk Island has a thriving arts and crafts scene, with many local artists creating jewelry, pottery, and other handmade items.

Book excerpt: It's well documented that there were major embarkations from Norfolk Island in the latter years of the Island's first Settlement, notably from 1807 to 1814, as the inhabitation of Island was being wound down for its closure. However, there were some substantial embarkations in early years that have not been fully documented as a contextual group study. The earliest of these large embarkations that of the Kitty to Port Jackson departing Norfolk Island 9 Mar 1793. This was not for a winding down of the settlement but rather a changeover of military personnel, settlers leaving the Island, transfer of some time expired convicts to Port Jackson and a small number of troublesome persons being returned to NSW.

Set in beautiful surroundings, these World Heritage Sites hide a dark history from the times when convict labour was vital to the economy of the Australian colonies. The volcanic islands in the southern oceans are the locations of Australia’s only active volcanoes, and provide geologists and other scientists with information about the way the Earth’s molten interior is still coming to the surface to create new land on Australia’s territorial islands. ABOUT THE WORLD HERITAGE SITES IN AUSTRALIA SERIES The titles in World Heritage Sites in Australia cover magnificent natural locations, precious historic buildings and places that contain rare archaeological remains. Australians treasure their heritage sites, and this series reveals where each site is located and what makes it so special. Find out how UNESCO chooses World Heritage Sites, and what listings mean for the countries involved. Included in this series are sections on Indigenous culture, sustainability, environmental management and the importance of place, all of which will support the Australian Curriculum for primary schools.
