Book excerpt: The countries around the Baltic sea are among Europe's frontline states affected by the conflict between Russia and western Europe. Currently, they can neither defend nor maintain regional security by themselves: Their capacities are limited and their memberships in different security institutions (EU and NATO) complicate a common assessment and response, as do their diverging security policies. They depend on the deterrence and defence efforts of their partners and NATO. Germany, as one of the largest and most capable countries bordering the Baltic Sea, should contribute towards improving regional security by supporting regional cooperation, and by sharpening the Nordic-Baltic dimension of its security policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes a comprehensive approach to security in the Nordic-Baltic region, studying how this region is affected by developments in the international system. The advent of the new millennium coincided with the return of the High North to the world stage. A number of factors have contributed to the increased international interest for the northern part of Europe: climate change resulting in ice melting in Greenland and the Arctic, and new resources and shipping routes opening up across the polar basin foremost among them. The world is no longer "unipolar" and not yet "multipolar," but perhaps "post-unipolar", indicating a period of flux and of declining US unipolar hegemony. Drawing together contributions from key thinkers in the field, Northern Security and Global Politics explores how this situation has affected the Nordic-Baltic area by addressing two broad sets of questions. First, it examines what impact declining unipolarity - with a geopolitical shift to Asia, a reduced role for Europe in United States policy, and a more assertive Russia - will have on regional Nordic-Baltic security. Second, it takes a closer look at how the regional actors respond to these changes in their strategic environment. This book will be of much interest to students of Nordic and Baltic politics, international security, foreign policy and IR.

Book excerpt: "The United States and the Nordic states enjoy a strong, productive relationship. However, stability in the Nordic-Baltic area is under increasing stress, which has implications for both NATO and its partner members, Finland and Sweden. In "Nordic-Baltic Security and the US Role," the Atlantic Council's US Navy Senior Fellow Mark Seip argues that the United States must prioritize bolstering assurance among NATO members, principally the Baltic states. Additionally, the United States and NATO should enhance its capabilities through collaboration, leverage soft power instruments, and find mutuality between NATO and its key partners, Finland and Sweden. In doing so, the United States and the Nordic nations stand to solidify the gains of the thriving region and strengthen European security"--Publisher's description.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NATO's enlargement has brought it to the borders of the Baltic states who covet membership in NATO. However, admitting them into NATO is one of the most difficult problems for the Alliance because of Russia's unconditional opposition to such action and because of NATO's own internal divisions on this issue. Nonetheless, a new regime or system of security for the entire Baltic region must now be on the U.S. and European agenda. The key players in such a process are Russia, Germany, and the United States. Their actions will determine the limits of the possible in constructing Baltic security for the foreseeable future. Dr. Stephen Blank presents a detailed and extensive analysis of these three governments' views on Baltic and European security. Their views on regional security are materially shaped by and influence their larger views on their mutual relations and policy towards Europe. Their views also demonstrate the complexity of the issues involved in constructing Baltic, not to mention European, security. But because NATO enlargement is the most serious foreign policy and defense issue before Congress now, such an analysis can illuminate much of what is happening in the NATO enlargement process and why it has taken its current shape.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research provides an analysis of the current maritime security threat to the Baltic Approaches posed by Warsaw Pact military expansion. Nordic regional security is discussed in order to determine the importance of the region from both the Warsaw Pact and NATO perspective. The role of Finnish and Swedish neutrality as well as the roles of NATO and Warsaw Pact allies are examined in terms of capability, resolve and national interests. Denmark, as the geographic key to the Baltic, is discussed in particular depth. As Soviet pressures have increased in Danish territorial waters and airspace, Denmark's support for NATO has been questioned. The contribution of the Federal Republic of Germany, militarily NATO's strongest Baltic ally, is also reviewed. The regional balance in the Baltic has moved in favor of the Soviet led Warsaw Pact. However, Soviet political and military pressure has been relatively ineffective and even counterproductive to date. Both Denmark and the FRG remain firmly entrenched in NATO. Neutral Sweden has become even more firmly committed to defend Swedish territory from Warsaw Pact encroachments. Possible options are explored to enable NATO to shift the regional balance in the direction of stable deterrence and provide renewed security to the Baltic Sea and its approaches. (Author).

Book excerpt: Major changes in the European security system in recent years, deriving principally from the collapse of the Soviet Union, have radically altered the security concerns of Baltic and Nordic states. The security interests of the region require a level of commitment to, and involvement in, reconstruction in the old Eastern Bloc countries. Failure to build economic stability in these countries will result in social and political unrest which could affect inter-state relations between the old adversaries of the Cold War. This paper discusses the security options and decisions facing the Baltic and Nordic states.

The second analyses the Central European countries, Russia and States of the former Soviet Union in terms of their ideologies, political structures and relationships of the Cold War period. Lastly the text examines the northern and southern regions of Europe where quite different perspectives and agendas are concerned.

Book excerpt: "Whether it is a question of stabilizing U.S. and Alliance relations with Russia, adapting and enlarging Europe's primary security institutions, or restructuring military forces to meet the new challenges of Euro-Atlantic stability, what happens in the Nordic-Baltic region over the next several years can serve as a predictor for whether all of Europe will see peace and stability, the return of a cold war, or ongoing bouts of instability culminating in small but deadly wars on its periphery. The authors set forth a detailed examination of the new strategic dynamics at work in the Nordic-Baltic region and provide in-depth assessments of the security perspectives held by states bordering the Baltic Sea. The authors then examine current U.S. strategy toward the region and propose next steps for U.S. policy, including, most importantly, a policy for Baltic membership in NATO."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc.
