Book excerpt: During the past two decades, thanks to the mutual fertilization of the research in quantum information and condensed matter, new approaches based on purely quantum features without any classical analog turned out to be very useful in the characterization of many-body quantum systems (MBQS). A peculiar role is obviously played by the study of purely quantum correlations, manifesting in the "spooky" properties of entanglement and nonlocality (or Bell correlations), which ultimately discriminate classical from quantum regimes. It is, in fact, such kind of correlations that give rise to the plethora of intriguing emergent behaviors of MBQS, which cannot be reduced to a mere sum of the behaviors of individual components, the most important example being the quantum phase transitions. However, despite being indeed closely related concepts, entanglement and nonlocality are actually two different resources.With regard to the entanglement, we will use it to characterize several instances of MBQS, to exactly locate and characterize quantum phase transitions in spin-lattices and interacting fermionic systems, to classify different gapped quantum phases according to their topological features and to provide a purely quantum signature of chaos in dynamical systems.Our approach will be mainly numerical and for simulating the ground states of several one-dimensional lattice systems we draw heavily on the celebrated "density matrix renormalization group" (DMRG) algorithm in the "matrix product state" (MPS) ansatz. A MPS is a one-dimensional tensor network (TN) representation for quantum states and occupies a pivotal position in what we have gained in thinking MBQS from an entanglement perspective. In fact, the success of TNs states mainly relies on their fulfillment, by construction, of the so called "entanglement area law". This is a feature shared by the ground states of gapped Hamiltonians with short-range interactions among the components and consists of a sub-extensive entanglement entropy, which grows only with the surface of the bipartition. This property translates in a reduced complexity of such systems, allowing affordable simulations, with an exponential reduction of computational costs. Besides the use of already existing TN-based algorithms, an effort will be done to develop a new one suitable for high-dimensional lattices.While many useful results are available for the entanglement in many different contexts, less is known about the role of nonlocality. Formally, a state of a multi-party system is defined nonlocal if its correlations violate some "Bell inequality" (BI). The derivation of the BIs for systems consisting of many parties is a formidable task and only recently, a class of them, relevant for nontrivial states, has been proposed. In an important chapter of the thesis, we apply these BIs to fully characterize the phase transition of a long-range ferromagnetic Ising model, doing a comparison with entanglement-based results and then making one of the first efforts in the study of MBQS from a nonlocality perspective.

In this work we use field theory methods to study some of these systems. To do so, we first introduce a field theory representation for the systems of interest, as well as the specific formalism to be used throughout, the so-called non perturbative renormalization group (NPRG). This formalism has emerged in the last years as a very efficient way to deal with strongly correlated systems, and has been applied with success to problems both in and out of equilibrium. Before treating the actual systems of interest, we develop some new tools and methods within the NPRG context, and test them in a simple scalar field theory, belonging to the Ising universality class. We are able to obtain results for the momentum-dependent scaling function of the d=3 Ising model, without having to fix any free parameter. Also, in order to tackle in an efficient way the physics of out of equilibrium systems, we study in detail some formal aspects of their passage to a field theory representation, as well as the equivalences between different possible ways to perform this passage. After these preliminaries, we concentrate in out of equilibrium active-to-absorbing phase transitions in reaction-diffusion systems, and in particular in the subclass known as branching and annihilating random walks (BARW). Among other results, we use the NPRG to find an exact solution to any vertex in a simple system, known as pure annihilation. With this, we analyze some properties of BARW at low branching rates, by means of an expansion in the branching rate around pure annihilation. This perturbative expansion, which is performed around a nontrivial model, allows us to find some striking exact results for some of the most important universality classes in these systems.

Book excerpt: The unusual low temperature behaviour of metals and metal alloys, such as heavy fermion systems, Mott insulators and unconventional superconductors, has been a central topic of scientific investigation for over half a century. Due to strong correlations between the many particles, the solution to most theoretical models of these systems is difficult because standard perturbation methods break down. In certain cases, non-perturbative renormalization group approaches can be used to access the low energy behaviour and take into account the effects of strong correlations. However, these methods do not work for several important and interesting classes of model. These include lattice models with finite dimension, models with impurities of high degeneracy and steady state transport through quantum dots. The aim of this thesis is therefore to develop a new and general re normalization group approach that will lend itself to wide application in models where existing techniques fail. The method explored here utilises re normalized perturbation theory (RPT) in conjunction with scaling equations and collective excitations. It is tested on the single impurity Anderson model, the paradigmatic model used to understand magnetic impurities within a non-magnetic host metal. The Anderson model is simple yet exhibits interesting features due to strong correlation, such as a single renormalized low energy scale called the Kondo temperature. This model is also well understood as it has been solved using the numerical renormalization group (NRG), which provides ample numerical data against which this new technique is compared. Finally, a preliminary study is given for this method when it is applied to a wider class of models.
