Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An outline of new research results is given in the FEL klystron theory, exotic short-pulse evolution, optical guiding in the high-gain regime, fully four-dimensional simulations of the FEL, coherence development and line-narrowing in the FEL, and a global map describing the trapped-particle instability and chaos regions in the free electron laser. The description of the high-gain klystron FEL was improved. Previous work has assumed low-gain in the analysis of the high-gain klystron design. The gain of the klystron FEL in this research was calculated with use of the coupled, self-consistent Lorentz-Maxwell equations. For high gain, the objective of the klystron configuration, the gain spectrum is found to be modified from the previously known low-gain result. This is caused by the shifting of the optical phase during the gain process and is calculated for the first time. The effects derived are not obtainable from the Madey Theorem. The klystron saturation in strong nonlinear optical fields is also discussed. A comparison is made of the use of plasma theory and distribution functions, and the single particle approach.

This book was released on 1977 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper the linear and nonlinear theory of the electron cyclotron maser instability is considered. The configuration used to study the laser instability consists of relativistic electrons gyrating about and drifting along a uniform magnetic field within a parallel plate waveguide. Relativistic effects associated with the gyrating electrons are responsible for excitation of the transverse electric mode in the waveguide. Linear theory shows that the growth rate maximizes when the actual beam velocity coincides with the axial wave group velocity of the excited electromagnetic wave. This allows the performance of nonlinear analysis in a frame where both the axial wave number and axial beam velocity vanish. The nonlinear analysis shows that there are two possible mechanisms for the saturation of the unstable wave: i. depletion of the available free energy associated with the rotating particles. ii. phase trapping of the gyrating electrons in the wave. The initial beam parameters determine which of the two mechanisms is responsible for saturation. Competition between the two saturation mechanisms leads to a peaking in the energy conversion efficiency as a function of beam energy. Numerical results of the nonlinear formalism show that energy conversion efficiencies from the particles to the wave can be as high as 60 percent in the beam frame.

Book Synopsis Physics Of Nonneutral Plasmas by : Ronald C Davidson
Download or read book Physics Of Nonneutral Plasmas written by Ronald C Davidson and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2001-10-22 with total page 755 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A nonneutral plasma is a many-body collection of charged particles in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The diverse areas of application of nonneutral plasmas include: precision atomic clocks, trapping of antimatter plasmas and antihydrogen production, quantum computers, nonlinear vortex dynamics and fundamental transport processes in trapped nonneutral plasmas, strongly-coupled one-component plasmas and Coulomb crystals, coherent radiation generation in free electron devices, such as free electron lasers, magnetrons and cyclotron masers, and intense charged particle beam propagation in periodic focusing accelerators and transport systems, to mention a few examples. Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas is a graduate-level text — complete with 138 assigned problems and the results from several classic experiments — which covers a broad range of topics related to the fundamental properties of collective processes and nonlinear dynamics of one-component and multispecies charged particle systems in which there is not overall charge neutrality. The subject matter is treated systematically from first principles, using a unified theoretical approach, and the emphasis is on the development of basic concepts that illustrate the underlying physical processes in circumstances where intense self fields play a major role in determining the evolution of the system. The theoretical analysis includes the full influence of dc space charge effects on detailed equilibrium, stability and transport properties. The statistical models used to describe the properties of nonneutral plasmas are based on the nonlinear Vlasov-Maxwell equations, the macroscopic fluid-Maxwell equations, or the Klimontovich-Maxwell equations, as appropriate, and extensive use is made of theoretical techniques developed in the description of multispecies electrically-neutral plasmas, as well as established techniques in classical mechanics, electrodynamics and statistical physics.Physics of Nonneutral Plasmas emphasizes basic physics principles, and the thorough presentation style is intended to have a lasting appeal to graduate students and researchers alike. Because of the advanced theoretical techniques developed for describing one-component charged particle systems, this book serves as a useful companion volume to Physics of Intense Charged Particle Beams in High Energy Accelerators by Ronald C Davidson and Hong Qin.

This book was released on 1980 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A self-consistent theory of the free electron laser instability is developed for a hollow electron beam propagating through an undulator (multiple mirror) magnetic field. The stability analysis is carried out within the framework of the linearized Vlasov-Maxwell equations. The dispersion relation describing the free electron laser instability in a hollow relativistic electron beam is obtained for an equilibrium distribution function in which all electrons have same value of transverse energy and the same value of canonical angular momentum, and a Lorentian distribution in axial momentum. It is shown that the influence of finite radial geometry plays a critical role in determining detailed stability behavior. Moreover, the growth rate and bandwidth of the instability can be expressed in terms of Budker's parameter upsilon, instead of the plasma frequency as in the case of a uniform density beam. Furthermore, it is found that free electron laser stability properties exhibit a sensitive dependence on axial momentum spread.
Book Synopsis The Non-Linear Theory of Free Electron Lasers and Efficiency Enhancement by :
Download or read book The Non-Linear Theory of Free Electron Lasers and Efficiency Enhancement written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of lasers in which the active medium is a relativistic stream of free electrons has recently evoked much interest. The potential advantages of such free electron lasers include, among other things, continuous frequency tunability, very high power of operations and high efficiency. The free electron laser is characterized by a pump field; for example, a spatially periodic magnetic field, which scatters from a relativistic electron beam. The scattered radiation has a wavelength much smaller than the pump wavelength depending on the electron beam energy. We present a general self-consistent non-linear theory of the free electron laser process. The non-linear formulation of the temporal steady state free electron laser problem results in a set of coupled differential equations governing the spatial evolution of the amplitudes and wavelength of the radiation and space charge fields. These equations are readily solved numerically since the amplitude and wavelength vary on a spatial scale which is comparable to a growth length of the output radiation. A number of numerical/analytical illustrations are presented ranging from the optical to the submillimeter wavelength regime. Our non-linear formulation in the linear regime is compared with linear theory and agreement is found to be excellent. Analytical expressions for the saturated efficiency and radiation amplitude are also shown to be in very good agreement with out non-linear numerical solutions. Efficiency curves are obtained for both the optical and submillimeter FEL examples with fixed magnetic pump parameters. We show that these intrinsic efficiencies can be greatly enhanced by appropriately contouring the magnetic pump period.

Book Synopsis Two-dimensional Theory and Simulation of Free Electron Lasers by :
Download or read book Two-dimensional Theory and Simulation of Free Electron Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two-dimensional homogeneous theory of free-electron lasers with a wiggler magnetic field of constant wavelength is formulated. It has been found from the theory that waves propagating obliquely with respect to the electron beam are always unstable with appreciable growth rates; therefore, mode competition among the on-axis and off-axis modes is an important consideration in the design of the free-electron laser. Furthermore, electromagnetic waves with group velocities opposite to the direction of electron beam propagation are absolutely unstable if k/sub o/v/sub o/> .omega./sub pe/(1/.gamma.32 + 1/.gamma.12). Due to strong nonlinear saturation levels of the low-frequency absolute instability, the dynamics of the electron beam and the generation of the high-frequency electromagnetic radiation can be severely affected. Two-dimensional particle simulations show that the efficiency of generation of the on-axis high-frequency electromagnetic wave decreases significantly due to instability of the off-axis modes. In addition, complete disruption of the electron beam and laser oscillation due to the onset of the absolute instability have been observed in simulations.
