Book excerpt: This book focuses on a central question in the field of complex systems: Given a fluctuating (in time or space), uni- or multi-variant sequentially measured set of experimental data (even noisy data), how should one analyse non-parametrically the data, assess underlying trends, uncover characteristics of the fluctuations (including diffusion and jump contributions), and construct a stochastic evolution equation? Here, the term "non-parametrically" exemplifies that all the functions and parameters of the constructed stochastic evolution equation can be determined directly from the measured data. The book provides an overview of methods that have been developed for the analysis of fluctuating time series and of spatially disordered structures. Thanks to its feasibility and simplicity, it has been successfully applied to fluctuating time series and spatially disordered structures of complex systems studied in scientific fields such as physics, astrophysics, meteorology, earth science, engineering, finance, medicine and the neurosciences, and has led to a number of important results. The book also includes the numerical and analytical approaches to the analyses of complex time series that are most common in the physical and natural sciences. Further, it is self-contained and readily accessible to students, scientists, and researchers who are familiar with traditional methods of mathematics, such as ordinary, and partial differential equations. The codes for analysing continuous time series are available in an R package developed by the research group Turbulence, Wind energy and Stochastic (TWiSt) at the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Joachim Peinke. This package makes it possible to extract the (stochastic) evolution equation underlying a set of data or measurements.

In this book systems are investigated which exhibit excitable, oscillatory and bistable behavior as basic modes of nonlinear dynamics. Addition of stochastic fluctuations contribute to the appearance of complex behavior. Bifurcations of local behavior as well as nucleation of spatially extended structures are studied. Typical fronts and spirals appear but also unusual patterns such as moving clusters and inverted waves. Methods are presented to find expressions for front velocities in the presence of system boundaries. An abstract two-state model with two waiting time distributions is considered representing excitable dynamics. Instantaneous and delayed response of the ensemble's response is analyzed. Furthermore transport and diffusion of Brownian particles in a spatio-temporal oscillating potential is discussed. As a cause of nearly dispersion-less transport synchronization mechanisms can be identified.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non-Linear Transformations of Stochastic Processes focuses on the approaches, methodologies, transformations, and computations involved in the non-linear transformations of stochastic processes. The selection first underscores some problems of the theory of stochastic processes and the transmission of random functions through non-linear systems. Discussions focus on the transformation of moment functions for the general non-linear transformation; conversion formulas for correlation functions; transformation of moment functions for the simplest type of non-linear transformation; and normalization of the linear system of probability distribution laws. The text then ponders on quasi-moment functions in the theory of random processes and correlation functions in the theory of the Brownian motion generalization of the Fokker-Planck equation. The manuscript elaborates on the correlation functions of random sequences of rectangular pulses; method of determining the envelope of quasi-harmonic fluctuations; and the problem of measuring electrical fluctuations with the aid of thermoelectric devices. The book then examines the effect of signal and noise on non-linear elements and the approximate method of calculating the correlation function of stochastic signals. The selection is a dependable source of information for researchers interested in the non-linear transformations of stochastic processes.

Book excerpt: This book introduces mathematicians to the fascinating mathematical interplay between ideas from stochastics and information theory and practical issues in studying complex multiscale nonlinear systems. It emphasizes the serendipity between modern applied mathematics and applications where rigorous analysis, the development of qualitative and/or asymptotic models, and numerical modeling all interact to explain complex phenomena. After a brief introduction to the emerging issues in multiscale modeling, the book has three main chapters. The first chapter is an introduction to information theory with novel applications to statistical mechanics, predictability, and Jupiter's Red Spot for geophysical flows. The second chapter discusses new mathematical issues regarding fluctuation-dissipation theorems for complex nonlinear systems including information flow, various approximations, and illustrates applications to various mathematical models. The third chapter discusses stochastic modeling of complex nonlinear systems. After a general discussion, a new elementary model, motivated by issues in climate dynamics, is utilized to develop a self-contained example of stochastic mode reduction. Based on A. Majda's Aisenstadt lectures at the University of Montreal, the book is appropriate for both pure and applied mathematics graduate students, postdocs and faculty, as well as interested researchers in other scientific disciplines. No background in geophysical flows is required. About the authors: Andrew Majda is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and has received numerous honors and awards, including the National Academy of Science Prize in Applied Mathematics, the John von Neumann Prize of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics, the Gibbs Prize of the American Mathematical Society, and the Medal of the College de France. In the past several years at the Courant Institute, Majda and a multi-disciplinary faculty have created the Center for Atmosphere Ocean Science to promote cross-disciplinary research with modern applied mathematics in climate modeling and prediction. R.V. Abramov is a young researcher; he received his PhD in 2002. M. J. Grote received his Ph.D. under Joseph B. Keller at Stanford University in 1995.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nonequilibrium behavior of nanoscopic and biological systems, which are typically strongly fluctuating, is a major focus of current research. Lately, much progress has been made in understanding such systems from a thermodynamic perspective. However, new theoretical challenges emerge when the fluctuating system is additionally subject to time delay, e.g. due to the presence of feedback loops. This thesis advances this young and vibrant research field in several directions. The first main contribution concerns the probabilistic description of time-delayed systems; e.g. by introducing a versatile approximation scheme for nonlinear delay systems. Second, it reveals that delay can induce intriguing thermodynamic properties such as anomalous (reversed) heat flow. More generally, the thesis shows how to treat the thermodynamics of non-Markovian systems by introducing auxiliary variables. It turns out that delayed feedback is inextricably linked to nonreciprocal coupling, information flow, and to net energy input on the fluctuating level.

Then one day, perhaps you will find the final answer. "The Hermit Clad In Crane Feathers" In R. van Gullk's The Chinese Haze Hurders. It Isn't that they can't see the solution. It IS that they can't see the problem. G. K. Chesterton. The Scandal of Father Brown. "The POint of a Pin." Growing specialization and diversification have brought a host of monographs and textbooks on increasingly specialized topics. However, the "tree" of k now ledge of m athemat i cs and re I ated fie I ds does not grow only by putting forth new branches. It also happens, quite often in fact, that branches which were thought to be completely disparate are suddenly seen to be related. Further, the kind and level of sophistication of mathematics applied in various sciences has changed drastically in recent years: measure theory is used (non-trivially) in regional and theoretical economics; algebraic geometry interacts with physics; the Minkowsky lemma, COding theory and the structure of water meet one another in packing and covering theory; quantum fields, crystal defects and mathematical programming profit from homotopy theory; Lie algebras are relevant to filtering; and prediction and electrical engineering can use Stein spaces. And In addition to this there are such new emerging subdisciplines as "experimental mathematics", "CFD", "completely Integrable systems", "chaos, synergetics and large-scale order", which are almost impossible to fit into the eXisting classificatIOn schemes.

Book excerpt: This book is the first one devoted to high-dimensional (or large-scale) diffusion stochastic processes (DSPs) with nonlinear coefficients. These processes are closely associated with nonlinear Ito's stochastic ordinary differential equations (ISODEs) and with the space-discretized versions of nonlinear Ito's stochastic partial integro-differential equations. The latter models include Ito's stochastic partial differential equations (ISPDEs).The book presents the new analytical treatment which can serve as the basis of a combined, analytical-numerical approach to greater computational efficiency in engineering problems. A few examples discussed in the book include: the high-dimensional DSPs described with the ISODE systems for semiconductor circuits; the nonrandom model for stochastic resonance (and other noise-induced phenomena) in high-dimensional DSPs; the modification of the well-known stochastic-adaptive-interpolation method by means of bases of function spaces; ISPDEs as the tool to consistently model non-Markov phenomena; the ISPDE system for semiconductor devices; the corresponding classification of charge transport in macroscale, mesoscale and microscale semiconductor regions based on the wave-diffusion equation; the fully time-domain nonlinear-friction aware analytical model for the velocity covariance of particle of uniform fluid, simple or dispersed; the specific time-domain analytics for the long, non-exponential “tails” of the velocity in case of the hard-sphere fluid. These examples demonstrate not only the capabilities of the developed techniques but also emphasize the usefulness of the complex-system-related approaches to solve some problems which have not been solved with the traditional, statistical-physics methods yet. From this veiwpoint, the book can be regarded as a kind of complement to such books as “Introduction to the Physics of Complex Systems. The Mesoscopic Approach to Fluctuations, Nonlinearity and Self-Organization” by Serra, Andretta, Compiani and Zanarini, “Stochastic Dynamical Systems. Concepts, Numerical Methods, Data Analysis” and “Statistical Physics: An Advanced Approach with Applications” by Honerkamp which deal with physics of complex systems, some of the corresponding analysis methods and an innovative, stochastics-based vision of theoretical physics. To facilitate the reading by nonmathematicians, the introductory chapter outlines the basic notions and results of theory of Markov and diffusion stochastic processes without involving the measure-theoretical approach. This presentation is based on probability densities commonly used in engineering and applied sciences.
