Book excerpt: "All optical switching is one of potential candidate that may break the computational limit based on semiconductor technology. Such a device has the advantage of lower power dissipation, subpicosecond switching time, and holographic processing. One way of realizing such a device is to exploit the high reflectivity of one-dimensional Bragg reflection. High reflection of the input probe beam is achieved by properly fabricating the photonic crystal with alternating layers with appropriate thicknesses and refractive index in order to satisfy the Bragg condition for high reflections. By using highly nonlinear optical material as one of the layers in the Bragg reflection stack, a pumping beam can be used to alter the refractive index of the nonlinear material, and thereby failing to satisfy the Bragg condition, so the transmission of the input probe beam is changed. Three one-dimensional photonic crystals were fabricated. They differs primarily by its physical geometry in effort to boost the switching state intensity. All three takes the advantage of high non-linear absorption poly(thiophene). The first photonic crystal was based solely on poly(thiophene), while the second one incorporates a non-linear Bragg reflector. By taking advantage of the strong angle dependence of the photonic crystal, the crystal was fabricated into a domed shaped geometry in order to further enhance the distinction of the two switch states. Probe-pump setup was used to determine the bistability of each of the photonic crystal. The transmission of the probe beam intensity change between the two switch state controlled by the pumping beam at pumping power of 3.64 (plus or minus) 0.04 GW/cm2 was 4.19 (plus or minus) 0.24 MW/cm2. Femtosecond pump-probe VIS transient spectroscopy was used to determine the transient responses of each of the photonics crystals. All of the crystals exhibit less than 250 fs rise peak-to-peak time. However, the decay time were much longer and only achieve subpicosecond times when the intensity decreased to 50% of its peak-to-peak value."--abstract.

The first technique uses nanoimprinting technology to directly pattern the guest-host NLO polymers. It can be applied to the fabrication of photonic bandgap structures in NLO materials, as well as many other photonic structures in both linear and nonlinear polymers. For example, we have shown that micro-ring optical resonator structure can be fabricated by using the imprinting technique. The second technique utilize self-assembly of NLO polymer monolayers onto nanostructured template. This approach provides a highly effective means to implement waveguide devices using high performance self-assembled polymers with large electro-optic activity and inherent long-term stability. Such method can also be extended to Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and covalently self-assembled thin films, and enables practical device applications for nonlinear optical thin films synthesized by these different layer-by-layer growth approaches to utilize their material properties, such as high nonlinear optical coefficient, very fast electronic response and good thermal and temporal stability.
