Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents the time-history thermal analysis of Zintel Canyon Dam, a structure of approximately 70,000 cubic yards of roller compacted concrete (RCC). This study was initiated to demonstrate the implementation of the superseded ETL 1110-2-324, "Special Design Provisions for Massive Concrete Structures," as applied to RCC structures. The results of the study were published in ETL 1110-2- 536, dated December 31, 1994, which should be used as guidance when conducting analyses of mass RCC structures. Since construction of the dam has been completed, actual data for ambient conditions, placing conditions, and available material properties were used in the analysis. Time- dependent material properties were incorporated into the analysis using specially developed user subroutines for ABAQUS, a general purpose finite element code. The analysis showed that several locations in the structure exhibit high stress levels capable of generating thermal cracks. Initiation of cracks in the RCC, parallel to the axis of the structure, was evident in the results; however, stress levels were not of a magnitude to propagate these cracks to the point of concern. In addition, stress results indicated that transverse cracking of the structure may occur at up to three locations. The performance predicted by the analysis was very similar to the thermal performance predicted by earlier manual computations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gentrification is reshaping cities worldwide, resulting in seductive spaces and exclusive communities that aspire to innovation, creativity, sustainability, and technological sophistication. Gentrification is also contributing to growing social-spatial division and urban inequality and precarity. In a time of escalating housing crisis, unaffordable cities, and racial tension, scholars speak of eco-gentrification, techno-gentrification, super-gentrification, and planetary-gentrification to describe the different forms and scales of involuntary displacement occurring in vulnerable communities in response to current patterns of development and the hype-driven discourses of the creative city, smart city, millennial city, and sustainable city. In this context, how do contemporary creative practices in art, architecture, and related fields help to produce or resist gentrification? What does gentrification look and feel like in specific sites and communities around the globe, and how is that appearance or feeling implicated in promoting stylized renewal to a privileged public? In what ways do the aesthetics of gentrification express contested conditions of migration and mobility? Addressing these questions, this book examines the relationship between aesthetics and gentrification in contemporary cities from multiple, comparative, global, and transnational perspectives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Product design is characterized by a steady increase in complexity. The main focus of this book is a structural approach on complexity management. This means, system structures are considered in order to address the challenge of complexity in all aspects of product design. Structures arise from the complex dependencies of system elements. Thus, the identification of system structures provides access to the understanding of system behavior in practical applications. The book presents a methodology that enables the analysis, control and optimization of complex structures, and the applicability of domain-spanning problems. The methodology allows significant improvements on handling system complexity by creating improved system understanding on the one hand and optimizing product design that is robust for system adaptations on the other hand. Developers can thereby enhance project coordination and improve communication between team members and as a result shorten development time. The practical application of the methodology is described by means of two detailed examples.

Book excerpt: The increasing trend towards electric cars leads to several challenges for the automobile industry, research institutes and politics as well as for the society. Research and serial development move closer together to meet automotive standards with new components like traction batteries integrated into hybrid and electrical drivetrains. Furthermore, the influence of e-mobility on the daily mobility behavior, the effects on the automotive supply chain and the impact on industrial production have to be taken into account. According to these complex aspects it is crucial to not only acquire specific knowledge in the particular fields but also to consider their functional interaction. Therefore, it seems essential to merge competence from science, economy and politics. This year, the annual „Conference on Future Automotive Technology“ as the follow-up of the „2. Automobiltechnisches Kolloquium München” focuses on the economical realization of widespread automotive electromobility.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Permeable framework is a special class of lined formwork used to produce improvements in the strength and durability of concrete. The bracing and the liner in the formwork are engineered to resist the pressure of plastic (or fresh) concrete, but to allow trapped air and excess water to pass through and be removed during concrete placement and consolidation. The objective in using permeable formwork is to eliminate voids on the surface of the concrete (bug holes) and to increase the strength and durability of the concrete surface immediately behind the formwork. A review of permeable formwork and its use in placing concrete was conducted. Methods, techniques, and materials are discussed, and example applications are described. Benefits of using permeable formwork include a reduction in bug holes and surface defects, improved resistance to freezing and thawing, reduced rates of surface carbonation and chloride-ion infiltration, increased surface strength, reduced form coating requirements, reduced efforts in curing, and reduced surface preparation for coating. The cost of using permeable formwork varies greatly among job sites. However, the cost of using permeable formwork will generally be double that for conventional impermeable formwork. Cost savings can be realized in the extended life of any wooden formwork used behind the filter fabric, the ability to proceed without applying form-release compounds, the decreased cost of final surface preparation (if coatings are to be applied to the finished concrete), and the increased service life of the finished concrete.

Book excerpt: Through one theoretical paper and empirical studies of contemporary examples of healthcare related uncertainties and their management, this collection articulates the different ways in which uncertainty may be articulated, enacted and experienced. Considers the role of ‘implicit normativity’ in masking and containing potential ethical uncertainty Presents core analytical strands: (1) conceptualising uncertainty; (2) intersections of uncertainty with aspects of care; (3) managing uncertainty; and (4) structural constraints, economic austerity and uncertainty work Reflects on the methodological and theoretical stances used to think sociologically about uncertainty in healthcare Considers the implications of the insights gained for ‘synthesising certainty’ in practice and for future research in this area
