Book Synopsis Applications of Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in Engineering - by : Santo Banerjee
Download or read book Applications of Chaos and Nonlinear Dynamics in Engineering - written by Santo Banerjee and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-10 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chaos and nonlinear dynamics initially developed as a new emergent field with its foundation in physics and applied mathematics. The highly generic, interdisciplinary quality of the insights gained in the last few decades has spawned myriad applications in almost all branches of science and technology—and even well beyond. Wherever quantitative modeling and analysis of complex, nonlinear phenomena is required, chaos theory and its methods can play a key role. This volume concentrates on reviewing the most relevant contemporary applications of chaotic nonlinear systems as they apply to the various cutting-edge branches of engineering. The book covers the theory as applied to robotics, electronic and communication engineering (for example chaos synchronization and cryptography) as well as to civil and mechanical engineering, where its use in damage monitoring and control is explored). Featuring contributions from active and leading research groups, this collection is ideal both as a reference and as a ‘recipe book’ full of tried and tested, successful engineering applications

Book Synopsis Instabilities, Chaos and Turbulence by : Paul Manneville
Download or read book Instabilities, Chaos and Turbulence written by Paul Manneville and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book (2nd edition) is a self-contained introduction to a wide body of knowledge on nonlinear dynamics and chaos. Manneville emphasises the understanding of basic concepts and the nontrivial character of nonlinear response, contrasting it with the intuitively simple linear response. He explains the theoretical framework using pedagogical examples from fluid dynamics, though prior knowledge of this field is not required. Heuristic arguments and worked examples replace most esoteric technicalities. Only basic understanding of mathematics and physics is required, at the level of what is currently known after one or two years of undergraduate training: elementary calculus, basic notions of linear algebra and ordinary differential calculus, and a few fundamental physical equations (specific complements are provided when necessary). Methods presented are of fully general use, which opens up ample windows on topics of contemporary interest. These include complex dynamical processes such as patterning, chaos control, mixing, and even the Earth's climate. Numerical simulations are proposed as a means to obtain deeper understanding of the intricacies induced by nonlinearities in our everyday environment, with hints on adapted modelling strategies and their implementation.
Book Synopsis Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos by : J Hogan
Download or read book Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos written by J Hogan and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-08-01 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear dynamics has been successful in explaining complicated phenomena in well-defined low-dimensional systems. Now it is time to focus on real-life problems that are high-dimensional or ill-defined, for example, due to delay, spatial extent, stochasticity, or the limited nature of available data. How can one understand the dynamics of such sys

Book Synopsis A Survey of Nonlinear Dynamics by : Richard Lee Ingraham
Download or read book A Survey of Nonlinear Dynamics written by Richard Lee Ingraham and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1992 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to give a survey of the whole field of nonlinear dynamics (or ?chaos theory?) in compressed form. It covers quite a range of topics besides the standard ones, for example, pde dynamics and Galerkin approximations, critical phenomena and renormalization group approach to critical exponents. The many meanings or measures of ?chaos? in the literature are summarized. A precise definition of chaos based on a carefully limited sensitive dependence is offered. An application to quantum chaos is made. The treatment does not emphasize mathematical rigor but insists that the crucial concepts and theorems be mathematically well-defined. Thus topology plays a basic role. This alone makes this book unique among short surveys, where the inquisitive reader must usually be satisfied with colorful similes, analogies, and hand-waving arguments.Richard Ingraham graduated with B.S. summa cum laude in mathematics from Harvard college and with M.A. and Ph.D in Physics from Harvard Graduate School. He was granted the Sheldon Prize Traveling Fellowship by Harvard College and was a member of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton for two years.
Book Synopsis Nonlinearities in Exchange-Rate Dynamics by : Vitaliy Vandrovych
Download or read book Nonlinearities in Exchange-Rate Dynamics written by Vitaliy Vandrovych and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we conduct a formal testing of the possibility of chaotic dynamics in daily exchange rate variables, namely exchange rate returns, volatility and normalized exchange rates. Substantial nonlinear dependence is found in exchange rate returns, even when GARCH-type structure is accounted for. Application of the tools from dynamical systems theory, such as correlation dimension and largest Lyapunov exponent calculation, strongly rejects the possibility of chaotic dynamics in the data. We show the importance of the Theiler correction to the Grassberger and Procaccia algorithm, omission of which can lead to a wrong conclusion of chaotic dynamics in some variables. Moreover, we suggest the necessity of considering a dynamic noise element in theoretical chaotic asset pricing models.
Book Synopsis Chaos and Complexity in Psychology by : Stephen J. Guastello
Download or read book Chaos and Complexity in Psychology written by Stephen J. Guastello and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-11-10 with total page 1020 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many books have discussed methodological advances in nonlinear dynamical systems theory (NDS), this volume is unique in its focus on NDS's role in the development of psychological theory. After an introductory chapter covering the fundamentals of chaos, complexity and other nonlinear dynamics, subsequent chapters provide in-depth coverage of each of the specific topic areas in psychology. A concluding chapter takes stock of the field as a whole, evaluating important challenges for the immediate future. The chapters are written by experts in the use of NDS in each of their respective areas, including biological, cognitive, developmental, social, organizational and clinical psychology. Each chapter provides an in-depth examination of theoretical foundations and specific applications and a review of relevant methods. This edited collection represents the state of the art in NDS science across the disciplines of psychology.
