Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title demonstrates how to develop computer programmes which solve specific engineering problems using the finite element method. It enables students, scientists and engineers to assemble their own computer programmes to produce numerical results to solve these problems. The first three editions of Programming the Finite Element Method established themselves as an authority in this area. This fully revised 4th edition includes completely rewritten programmes with a unique description and list of parallel versions of programmes in Fortran 90. The Fortran programmes and subroutines described in the text will be made available on the Internet via anonymous ftp, further adding to the value of this title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents recent and cutting edge advances in our understanding of key aspects of the response of materials under extreme loads that take place during high velocity impact and penetration. The focus of the content is on the numerous challenges associated with characterization and modeling of complex interactions that occur during these highly dynamic events. The following specific topics, among others, are addressed: characterization of material behavior under extreme loadings (estimate of damage, effects related to moisture contents, large pressures, large strain rates, etc.); measurement of microstructural changes associated with damage and mesoscopic scale modeling; macroscopic modeling, using the framework of the theory of viscoplasticity and damage; modeling and simulation of localization, cracking, and dynamic fragmentation of materials; application to penetration mechanics and trajectory instabilities. The book gathers together selected papers based on work presented as invited lectures at the 2nd US-France symposium held on 28-30 May 2008 in Rocamadour, France. The conference was organized by Eric Buzaud (DGA, Centre d'Études de Gramat) under the auspices of the International Center for Applied Computational Mechanics (ICACM).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As mankind continues to push back the boundaries and begins to explore other worlds and the ocean depths, a thorough understanding of how structures behave when subjected to extremes in temperature, pressure, and high loading rates will be essential. This symposium provided the perfect forum for presenting research into structures subjected to such extreme loads. There were a large number of papers presented under topics of impact, blast and shock loading, indicating a strong research interest in high rates of loading. Similarly new topics have been added to the traditional symposium list such as fire loading, earthquake loading, and fatigue and connection failures. It is clear now that fundamental knowledge of plastic deformation of structures to various extreme loads is coming of age. Each full paper was peer reviewed by at least two experts in the field.

A computer program is written in FORTRAN language that can treat uniformly distributed loadings. The modifications that are needed to treat other loadings are presented. This program is written in a nondimensional form so that any consistent units used for the input produces consistent units in the output.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computational procedure is presented for the nonlinear dynamic analysis of unsymmetric structures on vector multiprocessor systems. The procedure is based on novel hierarchical partitioning strategy in which the response of the unsymmetric structure at any time instant is approximated by a linear combination of symmetric and antisymmetric response vectors, each obtained by using only a fraction of the degrees of freedom of the original finite element model. The three key elements of the procedure which result in a high degree of concurrency throughout the solution process are (1) mixed (or primitive variable) formulation with independent shape functions for the different fields; (2) operator splitting or restructuring of the discrete equations at each time step to delineate the symmetric and antisymmetric vectors constituting the response; and (3) two-level iterative process for generating the response of the structure. An assessment is made of the effectiveness of the procedure on the CRAY X-MP/4 computers. Keywords: Parallel processing, Symmetry transformations, Operator splitting, Mixed formulations, Iterative.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Computational Science is the scientific discipline that aims at the development and understanding of new computational methods and techniques to model and simulate complex systems. The area of application includes natural systems - such as biology environ mental and geo-sciences, physics, and chemistry - and synthetic systems such as electronics and financial and economic systems. The discipline is a bridge bet ween 'classical' computer science - logic, complexity, architecture, algorithm- mathematics, and the use of computers in the aforementioned areas. The relevance for society stems from the numerous challenges that exist in the various science and engineering disciplines, which can be tackled by advances made in this field. For instance new models and methods to study environmental issues like the quality of air, water, and soil, and weather and climate predictions through simulations, as well as the simulation-supported development of cars, airplanes, and medical and transport systems etc. Paraphrasing R. Kenway (R.D. Kenway, Contemporary Physics. 1994): 'There is an important message to scientists, politicians, and industrialists: in the future science, the best industrial design and manufacture, the greatest medical progress, and the most accurate environmental monitoring and forecasting will be done by countries that most rapidly exploit the full potential of computational science'. Nowadays we have access to high-end computer architectures and a large range of computing environments, mainly as a consequence of the enormous sti mulus from the various international programs on advanced computing, e.g.
