Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alfred Hitchcock made many great films, but he also made many that critics and audiences largely dismissed. These least celebrated films, despite their admitted flaws and relative obscurity, offer much to reward the open-minded viewer. This critical study examines and reappraises fifteen such films generally overlooked by scholars and Hitchcock aficionados: Juno and the Paycock, The Skin Game, Waltzes from Vienna, Jamaica Inn, The Paradine Case, Under Capricorn, I Confess, Torn Curtain, Number Seventeen, Rich and Strange, Secret Agent, Mr. and Mrs. Smith, Stage Fright, The Wrong Man, and Topaz. Each film is discussed and analyzed in detail, revealing the master's touch in many previously unheralded ways. Brief assessments of the films from popular review compendia introduce each one, and excerpted highlights of numerous works of scholarship are liberally sprinkled throughout the text. In addition, wonderful rare still photographs from each film are included. Readers will come away with a richer sense of the director's talents in these films, adding to their appreciation of his work in unexpected ways.

Book excerpt: Ladies Nonetheless is a book written to fulfill a long standing promise. When Deacon Fran Hoyer worked as Assistant Chaplain in federal prison, the ladies would ask that she tell people that life for women in prison is not as traumatic as it is portrayed in the media. Their concern is that some of their family members are frantic with worry. Most of the women are mothers of young children who have nightmares, picturing their mom in a dungeon. So she promised, "Someday day Ill write a book about you" and thats how this book came into existence. The author begins by tracing the steps of how a suburban woman in her 60s became involved with women in prison. After six years her ministry came to an abrupt halt as a result of 9/11. During this time though she met a wide variety of imprisoned women, from all walks of life, all of whom depended on her for spiritual counseling. They ranged from homeless women who purposely committed minor crimes, just enough to be housed in the prison for the winter months, to a college professor who could never imagine her companion could be involved in illegal dealings. Deacon Fran used notes from her journals, articles written for church newsletters, and memories to give the readers a glimpse of prison life. We read of a woman giving birth in a cell, women on suicide watch, women frightened for their safety, women taking control of their surroundings and most of all, women interacting with women. Some were high profile cases and others unknown to anyone other than their intimate families. In advocating for the rights of these women, the author points out the many abuses in the system. It poses a social dilemma, they have been placed there by our government for a perceived crime against society, do they deserve to be treated with loving care or with disregard for personal comfort and safety? Most of the women in this particular prison were not yet convicted, they were waiting to be tried. Its easy not to have compassion for the women as a group, they probably broke the law and now have to pay the price, or as the women put it, "you do the crime, you serve the time." But then, one has the opportunity to pick out individuals, just like the woman next door, or in your church community, and the compassion stirs within. Maybe they should be treated with more respect, given better living conditions, allowed to keep their humanity. This book, then puts human faces on the women for those who will never have the opportunity to sit on a metal framed bunk bed in a cell and comfort a woman who has been abused by family, society and life in general. Many of these women come from troubled backgrounds, neglected and abused by families and seeking affection from any source available. Many have had minimal formal education at best, and yet they survive. Some have come from other cultures and have no idea of being responsible to the government for their behavior. A Chinese woman was indignant that she was arrested for trying to earn money, "Its not the governments business what I sell, or how much money I earn." A Latino woman is confused, "I had to do what he said, hes my husband." An African American woman cries, "I need to care for my kids." A business woman from Europe claims, "I was just trying to do a favor for a friend." A Central American woman protests, "I never knew that I wasnt born in the United States, no one ever told me." These are the laments heard by Deacon Fran when she would ask a woman about her story, stories that often changed several times in the ensuing weeks. Quite often these women, if given the chance and a good education, could be leaders in their communities. They are bright, inventive, resourceful, but misguided. This book gives glimpses into their lives. Their wish is that society does not paint them all with the same brush. That they can avail themselves of education, learn to read good books, and i

Book excerpt: With refreshing humor, a conversational style, and a blending of conventional and original thought, author Jonathan Bryan observes that we alienate ourselves from God and one another; nonetheless, God retrieves us. In exploring this paradox, Bryan examines several quandaries of religion such as the meanings of "God," where we came from, why things go wrong, how to find an overarching meaning of the Bible, the policies of the biblical God, what happens next, and what to do about all this. The answers, both challenging and interesting, lead to what Bryan calls a "retrieval spirituality." Bryan's whimsical observations of his Labrador retriever, Jocko, provide analogies for explaining that just as Jocko retrieves sticks, so does God retrieve us, invite us to return to God. And just like Jocko, God remains faithful to us through thick and thin. It's a perfect book for those whose hearts yearn for a richer spiritual life, for groups discussing God, the Bible, and spirituality, and for anyone exasperated with ordinary religious writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Readability of the World represents Hans Blumenberg's first extended demonstration of the metaphorological method he pioneered in Paradigms for a Metaphorology. For Blumenberg, metaphors are symptomatic of patterns of thought and feeling that escape conceptual formulation but are nonetheless indispensable, because they allow humans to orient themselves in an otherwise overwhelming world. The Readability of the World applies this method to the idea that the world presents itself as a book. The metaphor of the book of nature has been central to Western interpretations of reality, and Blumenberg traces the evolution of this metaphor from ancient Greek cosmology to the model of the genetic code to access the different expectations of reality that it articulates, reflects, and projects. Writing with equal authority on literature and science, theology and philosophy, ancient metaphysics and twentieth-century biochemistry, Blumenberg advances rich and original interpretations of the thinking of a range of canonical figures, including Berkeley, Vico, Goethe, Spinoza, Leibniz, Bacon, Flaubert, and Freud. Through his interdisciplinary, anthropologically sharpened gaze, Blumenberg uncovers a wealth of new insights into the continuities and discontinuities across human history of the longing to contain all of nature, history, and reality in a book, from the Bible, the Talmud, and the Qur'an to Diderot's Encyclopedia and Humboldt's Cosmos to the ACGT of the DNA code.

Book excerpt: Betty Cannon is the first to explore the implications of Sartrean philosophy for the Freudian psychoanalytic tradition. Drawing upon Sartre's work as well as her own experiences as a practicing therapist, she shows that Sartre was a "fellow traveler" who appreciated Freud's psychoanalytic achievements but rebelled against the determinism of his metatheory. The mind, Sartre argued, cannot be reduced to a collection of drives and structures, nor is it enslaved to its past as Freud's work suggested. Sartre advocated an existentialist psychoanalysis based on human freedom and the self's ability to reshape its own meaning and value. Through the Sartrean approach Cannon offers a resolution to the crisis in psychoanalytic metatheory created by the current emphasis on relational needs. By comparing Sartre with Freud and influential post-Freudians like Melanie Klein, Otto Kernber, Margaret Mahler, D.W. Winnicott, Heinz Kohut, Harry Stack Sullivan, and Jacques Lacan, she demonstrates why the Sartrean model transcends the limitations of traditional Freudian metatheory. In the process, she adds a new dimension to our understanding of Sartre and his place in twentieth-century philosophy.

Book excerpt: In a wide-ranging study based on legal history, political theory, and philosophical ideas going all the way back to Plato and Roman law, Robert Clinton challenges current faith in an activist judiciary. Claiming that a human-centered Constitution leads to government by reductive moral theory and illegitimate judicial review, he advocates a return to traditional jurisprudence and a God-centered Constitution grounded in English common law and its precedents.
