The theory is that compositional fluctuations occur in the course of composite propellant burning, that these fluctuations originate from the inherent heterogeneity of the propellant microstructure, and that they will contribute to the nonsteady combustion under oscillating pressure (and velocity) conditions. Properties of the response to compositional fluctuations were determined and compared with responses to pressure and velocity fluctuations in series of parametric studies. The response to compositional fluctuations was found to be relatively strong response. Each response tended to increase with increasing AP particle size and pressure, and with decreasing mean crossflow velocity. A series of experiments was carried out with three propellants to determine whether or not certain features of the microstructure could be measured and correlated with response function behavior. Additional tasks pertaining to nonlinear combustion response and high frequency combustion response were performed and are described in the text. A list of publication generated by or in the course of this program is presented.

Book excerpt: Despite significant developments and widespread theoretical and practical interest in the area of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion for the last fifty years, a comprehensive and authoritative text on the subject has not been available. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion fills this gap by summarizing theoretical approaches to the problem within the framework of the Zeldovich-Novozhilov (ZN-) theory. This book contains equations governing unsteady combustion and applies them systematically to a wide range of problems of practical interest. Theory conclusions are validated, as much as possible, against available experimental data. Theory of Solid-Propellant Nonsteady Combustion provides an accurate up-to-date account and perspectives on the subject and is also accompanied by a website hosting solutions to problems in the book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solid rocket performance during rapid pressure excursions differs greatly from predictions based on steady-state burning rate data. Rapid pressurization (150 to 250 kpsi/sec) following a sudden throat area decrease in a low L star combustor produces pressure overshoots of 10% and indicated burning rate overshoots in excess of 50%. A transient internal ballistics model was developed incorporating nonsteady continuity and energy equations for the chamber, nonsteady energy equation for the propellant condensed phase, and a modified Zeldovich heat feedback function for the propellant (which for the conditions considered is known to burn a thin quasi-steady reaction zone). Sensitivity analyses using the model indicate that accurate surface temperature and temperature sensitivity data are needed. (Author).

Book excerpt: Monodisperse BDP combustion model was extended to nonmetallized propellants with mixed, polydisperse oxidizers by embedding monodisperse model in statistical framework including mixture ratio effects. Basically, polydisperse propellant is 'disassembled and rearranged' to form sequence of monodisperse pseudo-propellants whose rates are computed via monodisperse model. Reassembly provides real propellant's burning rate. Approach provides information pertaining to distribution of regression rates and surface structure among different size oxidizer particles. Preliminary results suggest that significant factor in rate increases wrought by introduction of small oxidizer modes is mixture ratio alternations in larger modes. Hydraulic T-burner analog was constructed and employed to visualize vent flow phenomena. Studies showed that flow enters vent with axial momentum and that momentum is partially transformed to vent into Karman vortex sheet. Fact that flow enters vent with axial momentum invalidates boundary condition of Culick analysis for flow turning gain; 'correct' boundary condition leads to null vent gain. Experimental facts consistent with proof that in formal one-dimensional flow vent gain violates second law of thermodynamics. Logical and consistent way to reduce solid rocket data when pressure-time history is not neutral was derived. Since current techniques are not self-consistent in this situation, these results open door to reclamation of performance data heretofore rejected. (Author).

Book excerpt: Modern energetic materials include explosives, blasting powders, pyrotechnic m- tures and rocket propellants [1, 2]. The study of high-temperature decomposition of condensed phases of propellants and their components (liquid, solid and hybrid) is currently of special importance for the development of space-system engineering [3, 4]. To better understand the burning mechanisms (stationary, nonstationary, - steady) of composite solid propellants and their components, information about the macrokinetics of their high-temperature decomposition is required [5]. To be able to evaluate the ignition parameters and conditions of safe handling of heat-affected explosives, one needs to know the kinetic constants of their high-temperature - composition. The development of new composite solid propellants characterized by high performance characteristics (high burning rates, high thermal stability, stability to intrachamber perturbations, and other aspects) is not possible without quanti- tive data on the high-temperature decomposition of composite solid propellants and their components [6]. The same reasons have resulted in signi?cant theoretical and practical interest in the high-temperature decomposition of components of hybrid propellants. It is known that hybrid propellants have not been used very widely due to the low bu- ing (pyrolysis) rates of the polymer blocks in the combustion chambers of hybrid rocket engines. To increase the burning rates it is necessary to obtain information about their relationships to the corresponding kinetic and thermophysical prop- ties of the fuels.

Book excerpt: A general method for extracting particle size dependent information from experimental rate/formulation data was developed from the statistical methodology. This technique was employed to correlate the data bases of Miller. Results showed that, by employing an interaction parameter of 4, both additive and additive free data could be correlated to standard error of estimate below 10.5%. The effect of steady radiant energy deposition on steady and nonsteady burning was explored. Results showed that if the radiant energy deposited in the reactive zones is negligible (an excellent assumption for low signature propellants) the effect of radiant energy deposition can always be accounted for by substituting the radiation augmented initial temperature for the initial propellant temperature.

Book excerpt: A prominent mode of coupling that may drive a solid propellant rocket motor into instability is the interaction between the oscillatory gas dynamic pressure at the burning surface and the instantaneous rate of the oscillatory pressure fluctuations and of rapid monotonic pressure increases are being investigated in a continuing program. Two pieces of apparatus are in use for this purpose. One is the T-tube oscillator. The latter is a chamber with a device to change suddenly on command the throat area of the nozzle to produce pressure rise times of 8,000 psi per second and less. This low range supplements the higher range achievable in the T-tube oscillator. The chamber has three quartz windows which allow luminosity measurements and high speed motion pictures of the propellant flame to be made along with chamber pressure. By varying the chamber volume, and thereby the dp/dt, luminosity versus pressure can be obtained as a function of dp/dt. From this, the temperature is plotted as a function of pressure and dp/dt, and therefore the entropy is plotted as a function of the same variables. The brightness-emissivity method of instantaneous flame temperature measurement is being used. Experiments are being conducted to determine the flame temperature as a function of pressure in various regimes of dp/dt. (Author).

Book excerpt: The objective of the research is to establish the processes in solid propellant combustion that control steady and nonsteady combustion rate (composite propellants). The practical goal is to: 1. Tailor burning rate by variation of formulation (oxidizer particle size, ballistic modifiers, and choice of binders). This includes learning what processes lead to low or negative sensitivity of burning rate to pressure increase (plateau and mesa burning). 2. Determine steps in the combustion process that are most responsive to oscillatory flows (combustion instability). 3. Evaluate the combustion characteristics of new oxidizer and binder ingredients, and of propellants that include new ingredients (and compare results with those of AP oxidizer and Ap/hydrocarbon binder propellants). 4. Develop a realistic qualitative model of the combustion process that would identify the requirements for formulation of realistic analytical models.

Book excerpt: The research carried out under the grant was aimed at furthering the scientific understanding of nonsteady propellant combustion behavior in rocket motor chambers. Controlled nonsteady flow and burning conditions were produced in laboratory-scale solid rocket motors by developing a device that modulated the throat area of the primary nozzle. Modulation frequencies up to 2400 Hz were obtained. The modulated throat rocket motor is being used to acquire data using AP composite propellant grains. Cold flow tests were used to study the acoustic modes and nozzle discharge characteristics. Computerized techniques were developed for conducting spectral analyses of head-end and nozzle-end pressure data. In addition, the equations describing the nonsteady one-dimensional gas dynamics and propellant combustion were formulated, and a comprehensive numerical solution was developed. The present solution takes into account the couplings among the oscillating nozzle flow, the nonsteady chamber flow, and erosive burning. Since pressure and velocity oscillations can be made to occur and decay in high loading density rocket motors with realistic grain configurations, the experiment is expected to produce propellant/chamber response functions that are relatively easy to interpret, compared to the difficult to interpret T-burner response functions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this report, the theoretical, steady state combustion model, the Petite Ensemble Model (PEM), is described in detail. The PEM is based upon a combination of a unique statistical treatment of the burning propellant surface and a comprehensive multiple flame type, physio-chemical combustion model. Due to this statistical treatment, the PEM can account for both oxidizer particle size and oxidizer particle size distribution effects on burning rate behavior; an unique feature of this model. The effects on propellant burning rate behavior due to the inclusion of aluminum particles have been taken into account within this version of the PEM, as have any possible effects caused by the presence of a crossflow velocity above the propellant surface (erosive burning). The PEM is capable of modeling the burning behavior of AP-based/hydrocarbon binder, composite solid propellants. Propellant additives such as aluminum oxide, zirconium carbide and graphite, as well as aluminum, can also be incorporated in the propellant formulations modeled by the PEM. This report presents the results obtained by applying a small perturbation analysis to the equations representing the steady state PEM (including aluminum and erosive burning effects). Performing such an analysis yields nonsteady state models of both the pressure coupled response and the velocity pressure coupled response of composite solid propellants. Other historical pressure coupled response models such as the Dension and Baum mode, the Cohen model, and the Zeldovich/Novozhilov model are also briefly described. Finally, a second velocity coupled response model based on the Zeldovich/Novozhilov methodology coupled to the erosive burning PEM is presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: A new, comprehensive steady-state model describing the burning of non-metalized, unimodal ammonium perchlorate (AP)-polymeric composite solid propellant has been developed and shown to yield better results than previous models. This new model incorporates a near-surface AP decomposition flame perturbed by fuel vapor diffusion (after Chaiken) followed by a granular diffusion flame (after Summerfield), and is termed the 'modified granular diffusion flame' (MGDF) model. The MGDF model permits numerical prediction of the influence of pressure, AP particle size, mixture ratio and propellant initial temperature on propellant burning rate. While the new model has proven notably successful, evaluation of the capabilities of it and other models is constrained by the limited existing data base. (Modified author abstract).
