Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed description of the most common nondestructive testing(NDT) techniques used for the testing and evaluation fiber-reinforced composite structures, during manufacturing and/or in service stages. In order to facilitate the understanding and the utility of the different NDT techniques presented, the book first provides some information regarding the defects and material degradation mechanisms observed in fiber-reinforced composite structures as well as their general description and most probable causes. It is written based on the extensive scientific research and engineering backgrounds of the authors in the NDT and structural health monitoring (SHM) of structural systems from various areas including electrical, mechanical, materials, civil and biomedical engineering. Pursuing a rigorous approach, the book establishes a fundamental framework for the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, while emphasizing on the importance of technique’s spatial resolution, integrated systems analysis and the significance of the influence stemming from the applicability of the NDT and the physical parameters of the test structures in the selection and utilization of adequate NDT techniques. The book is intended for students who are interested in the NDT of fiber-reinforced composite structures, researchers investigating the applicability of different NDT techniques to the inspections of structural systems, and NDT researchers and engineers working on the optimization of NDT systems for specific applications involving the use of fiber-reinforced composite structures.

Book excerpt: Composite materials are being increasingly used as structural components because of their high strength-to-weight ratio. In fact, advanced structural composites are rapidly finding their way from aerospace applications into automotive, industrial, and consumer products. From a technical standpoint, advanced plastic matrix composites could easily replace metal or load-bearing components in structures in many consumer and industrial products. Composites offer some of the standard advantages of plastics processing. A number of parts can be grouped into one structure; the structure can be large, and secondary operations can be minimized. Composites can supply characteristics other than strength or rigidity; for instance, exceptional thermal oxidative stability, good bearing or wear characteristics, or electrical conductivity. However, current primary use is associated with the structural characteristics of composites.

Book excerpt: This final report documents the completion of the fifth year of a continuing study concerned with the development of nondestructive testing techniques for quantitatively evaluating advance fiber- reinforced plastic composites. Five boron/ epoxy panels, one plain weave carbon/carbon panel, and a 3-D quartz/phenolic ssphere were nondestructively and destructively tested for mechanical properties behavior and physical properties characteristics. It was the purpose of this program to: (a) ESTABLISH PREDICTIVE CORRELATIONS BETWEEN ULTRASONICALLY-DETERMINED MODULUS VALUES AND DESTRUCTIVELY-MEASURED TENSILE, COMPRESSION, FLEXURE AND SHEAR MODULUS AND STRENGTH VALUES FOR THE 2-D composites; (b) relate 2- D and 3-D ultrasonic polar modulus values with apreviously-derived micro-mechanics- based theory for generating polar modulus values; (c) demonstrate the feasibility of applying a recently-conceived 6Interval Velocity Technique6 to reinfroced composites; (d) demonstrate the capability of a nondestructive, multiple-energy, gamma- ray radiometric technique for predicting mixture concentrations in boron/epoxy composites; and (e) investigate the use of width-and across-ply measurements of ultrasonic velocity for predicting the mechanical modes of failure occurring in composite test specimens. Book excerpt: Composites Evaluation contains the proceedings of the Second International Conference on Testing, Evaluation and Quality Control of Composites-TEQC 87, held at the University of Surrey, UK on September 22-24, 1987. The papers review the physical and chemical properties of composites and the testing and evaluation of these materials. This monograph is comprised of 29 chapters split into nine sections, organized around the themes of nondestructive testing, fatigue testing, impact testing, processing-property relationships, acoustic emission, fracture, mechanical tests, and specialized test equipment and assessment of in-service behavior. The first chapter deals with the nondestructive testing of welds in continuous carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics, while the second focuses on the use of an automated coin-tap technique for the nondestructive testing of composite structures. The chapters that follow explore hysteresis measurement for obtaining characteristic quantities during dynamic fatigue; real-time recording of impact experiments on composite laminates; the use of statistical methods for determining design data for advanced composite materials; and the strain dependence of elastic modulus in unidirectional composites. The final chapter describes a methodical approach for studying and predicting polymer fiber composite serviceability influenced by cold climate factors. This text will appeal to mechanical and structural engineers as well as materials scientists and technologists.

Book excerpt: This paper emphasizes the need for advanced nondestructive evaluation (NDE) techniques for quantitative assessment of the mechanical strength and integrity of fiber composites during manufacture and service and following repair operations. Problems and approaches are discussed relative to acceptance criteria, calibration standards, and methods for NDE of composites in strength-critical applications. It Is indicated that acousto-ultrasonic techniques provide the "methods of choice" in this area.

Book excerpt: The marine environment presents significant challenges for materials due to the potential for corrosion by salt water, extreme pressures when deeply submerged and high stresses arising from variable weather. Well-designed fibre-reinforced composites can perform effectively in the marine environment and are lightweight alternatives to metal components and more durable than wood. Marine Applications of Advanced Fibre-Reinforced Composites examines the technology, application and environmental considerations in choosing a fibre-reinforced composite system for use in marine structures. This book is divided into two parts. The chapters in Part One explore the manufacture, mechanical behavior and structural performance of marine composites, and also look at the testing of these composites and end of life environmental considerations. The chapters in Part Two then investigate the applications of marine composites, specifically for renewable energy devices, offshore oil and gas applications, rigging and sails. Underwater repair of marine composites is also reviewed. Comprehensively examines all aspects of fibre-reinforced marine composites, including the latest advances in design, manufacturing methods and performance Assesses the environmental impacts of using fibre-reinforced composites in marine environments, including end of life considerations Reviews advanced fibre-reinforced composites for renewable energy devices, rigging, sail textiles, sail shape optimisation and offshore oil and gas applications
