Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation in non-classroom activities has been documented to extend the intellectual, social, and psychosocial outcomes of the college experience. However, the benefits of non-classroom activities are often difficult to quantify due their voluntary nature, with findings mostly related to students within four-year institutions. The purpose of this study was to determine whether rural community college full-time freshman students who participate in non-classroom activities differ from nonparticipants with regard to self-identified values of academic integration, social integration, degree commitment, collegiate stress, and institutional commitment. These five factors have been demonstrated to influence student persistence and were adopted from Davidson et al.’s (2015) College Persistence Questionnaire, Version 2 (CPQ-V2). CPQ-V2 data were collected using an electronic survey distributed during the Fall 2021 semester. Survey participants offered details about their personal background and involvement in non-classroom activities, followed by responses to a series of questions from an adapted form of the CPQ-V2. The chi-square test of independence and one-way ANOVA were used to identify significant associations or relationships between variables. Data were analyzed through the lens of Astin’s theory of student involvement and Tinto’s theory of student departure. The results of analysis detected statistically significant associations between students’ level of involvement and their program of study, residency, employment, parental education, and volume of online classes. Their type of involvement was found to have a significant association with student residency. The level of involvement among students was also found to be significantly associated with their self-reported sense of social integration and degree commitment, a finding that was accompanied by the types of involvement and their statistical significance to their sense of social integration. Results from the survey instrument can vary across institutions and student populations; still, the results further demonstrate the differences among student groups in their non-classroom involvement. Accordingly, practitioners should continuously monitor their institution’s effectiveness in providing non-classroom opportunities that meet community college students’ needs and support their persistence efforts.

A survey was administered to 81 Coahoma Community College students who identified themselves as nontraditional students. The Nontraditional Students' Satisfaction survey was designed to examine the needs and satisfaction of nontraditional students. The nontraditional students at Coahoma Community College deemed getting information on financial aid opportunities, studying and test taking, computers and Internet use, job opportunities in their majors and academic tutoring as most important. The nontraditional students at Coahoma Community College deemed getting information on campus events and/or campus job opportunities as least important. In addition, the nontraditional students deemed getting advice on careers, getting advice on choosing courses, taking an active part in what goes on in their classes, having one place to go for general questions and problems, and having access to campus services and offices and/or on weekends as most important. The nontraditional students indicated participating in social activities on campus and being involved in extracurricular activities such as clubs, organizations, and student government as least important. Overall, the research data indicated that nontraditional students were satisfied with the services provided by Coahoma Community College. The nontraditional students were more satisfied with the opportunities to take an active part in what goes on in classes and instructors' availability outside of classes. The findings suggested that there was no significant relationship between nontraditional students encountering problems and their expressions of satisfaction.

Many community colleges serve the people who live in rural communities and are challenged with fewer financial resources. The term rural is not easily defined, and many variables need to be considered when creating academic programming for rural populations. There is no standard definition for it. The purpose of this dissertation was to determine how rural community colleges create successful programming that serves the needs of the local community. The study investigated the following questions: (a) What motivates community colleges to create academic programming for rural communities? (b) What is the planning process that the community colleges are using when determining programming for rural communities? (c) Who are the current stakeholders involved in the planning process? There are 17 community colleges in Oregon. They represent a range of sizes from small to large, in different location, and in the constituents they serve. Cases for this study were chosen using the Carnegie Classification System, both the Basic Classification and the Size and Setting Classifications were used to select the two colleges for the study. Study participants were identified by either the Chief Academic Officer or the Vice President of Instruction/Student Services Provost from each of the community colleges. The 10 people interviewed were identified as having knowledge or expertise around the college's efforts of creating programming in rural areas. They held positions such as chief academic officer, vice president of instruction/student services provost, division dean, director, and department chair within the college. The research design for this study involved a comparative case study. Faculty and administrators from two community colleges in Oregon were interviewed to determine motivation to create rural programming, to identify methods and processes used for rural programming, and to ascertain who the stakeholders are that participate in this decision-making. An open-ended question format was used. The responses were organized, explored, and coded. Then categories were built and data was interpreted. Lastly, the findings were summarized. Several strategies were used to ensure trustworthiness of the data collection and analysis. Data source triangulation involved comparison of the reports from multiple interviewers, as well as the cross-case analysis. Using investigator triangulation and peer review, other researchers and colleagues reviewed the interviews and themes. Method triangulation involved the use of information from interviews and from archival records, such as advisory board lists, internal surveys, mission statements, and websites. Finally, with member checking, interviewees reviewed and approved the transcripts and themes. The study found that community colleges are motivated to create academic programming in rural areas when needs are voiced by the community. In addition, community colleges tend to favor programming that supports access elements of the college's missions and values statement. Finally, the ability to sustain the programming in the rural areas was an additional factor that motivates community colleges to create programming in rural areas. Community college personnel considered many variables in designing programming for rural communities. Among them were reviewing their mission statements and strategic plans. They analyzed data derived from enrollment reports, demographics, and economic reports. Colleges also reviewed data collected on factors such as enrollment and retention rates, employment of students, and graduation rates. The process for creating programming for on campus and for rural areas was the same. However community colleges recognized the different needs of each of the populations. The college often asked for feedback from constituents to determine whether needs were being met in the community. They engaged with their constituents through surveys and focus groups. Reviewing funding was also important when proceeding with rural programming. The funding for the rural programming might be one or a combination of, resource allocation, grants, special fees, general funds or the use of surplus college funds. Partnerships were also an vital component of the resources used to finance rural programming. The stakeholders involved in the planning process for rural programming included the constituents residing in the community college districts. In addition the outreach staff and the administrative staff that were employed at the community college were also involved in the process. Given the lack of research on community college programming in rural areas, the present study contributes to the scholarship on this topic. Future researchers can build upon the present work to determine if the findings hold within other states and other state systems. In addition, regional or national surveys could be undertaken to explore the factors and variables identified in these case studies. Based on the results of the present research, a series of steps have been identified that can be utilized by a community college that is in the process of creating programming for rural areas. They are (a) apply community college documents, (b) utilize data, (c) assemble and review feedback, and (d) identify resources. These steps follow the apparently successful practices that emerged from the research. In addition, the present research has indicated various approaches for institutions that are struggling to find ways to reach out to rural communities in educational need. Thus, the research has the potential to create positive effects on education policy nationwide

Their role in their communities requires them to serve a variety of functions, from education provider, to economic development center, to a source of entertainment. Often this entertainment comes in the form of community college athletics. As rural community colleges make up 61% of community college athletics programs (Bush, et al., 2009; Casten̳eda, et al., 2006), these changes can impact a large number of students and communities. Despite the importance of this facet of rural community colleges, little is known about their athletes. This quantitative study sought to provide information regarding this oft-ignored area of intercollegiate athletics and provide information regarding the students who participate in this endeavor and their engagement with their institutions through their educational mission. This study was designed to explore and compare the student engagement of rural community college student athletes to the student engagement benchmarks of the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE). Determining if there was a predictive relationship, when controlling for background characteristics, between student athlete benchmark scores and self-reported GPA, was done through regression analysis. The results found that rural community college student athletes differ greatly from the general characteristics of rural community college students, and they are engaged in the campus at a high rate through almost all of the benchmarks. Race and academic preparedness greatly affected reported GPAs and all of the benchmarks were factors in predicting GPA, though not all positively.

Book excerpt: Over the past several decades, research has indicated that when parents are involved in their child's academic endeavors, their children are more likely to succeed in school. However, these findings are not congruent with the perceptions of every parent. For example, several parents reported that as their children become older, their level of involvement should decrease, while other parents felt as if their non-involvement will not have an effect either way on their child's academic performance. The focus of this study was to investigate the ways college students perceived their parents' involvement. Particularly, the overall objective of the study was to measure differences between groups based on the participants' gender, grade point average, age, classification level, their parents' income level and educational attainment. For this study, a survey design was employed to collect data. Two-hundred two (n=202) community college students participated in two empirical studies. The Parental Involvement Assessment (PIA), formulated by the researcher specifically for this study, was used to gather the data. In the preliminary study, Cronbach's Alpha on the instrument was found to be 0.819. Several ANOVAs were performed in order to determine the differences between groups on a number of measures. The results of this research indicated that parental involvement contributes to community college student success, regardless of gender. In addition, parents with higher income levels were more likely to be involved. Additionally, students who were not aware of their GPA indicated that they would know their GPA if their parents were involved. Last, amid other results, findings indicated that students with higher GPAs were more likely to be rewarded for grades, were more likely to be encouraged by their parents, and were more satisfied with the level of parental involvement. Limitations and directions for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: College student persistence has long interested scholars and universities alike (Bean, 1983; Goodman, & Pascarella, 2006; Hlinka, 2017; Moschetti & Hudley, 2014; Pascarella & Terenzini, 2005; Tinto; 1993; 2012). While universities have given attention to the academic integration of students (e.g., their GPA and general academic performance), social integration has become increasingly more studied as an integral component to a student's likelihood to persist (Tinto, 1993; 2012). This study incorporated social capital theory (Coleman, 1988) as a lens to understand how social integration may affect a student's likelihood to persist. Using survey methodology and a sample of first-year students at large midwestern university (n = 101), the results showed that strong school social capital in the form of relationships with peers and authority figures at college may help a student overcome structural disadvantages embedded within their family and home community social networks. Specific differences in the formation of social capital between nonrural and rural students were also explored with meaningful results. Rural students were more likely to perceive stronger relationships with authority figures at college than nonrural students, and nonrural students were more likely to perceive their home communities as more supportive of higher education than rural students.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to increase student success at a small comprehensive community college in eastern Montana, herein referred to by the pseudonym Rural Community College (RCC). The study was designed to empower college administrators, faculty, and staff to foster student success by adding strategies for success via a local student success model (LSSM) to the range of best practices currently in place at RCC, such as mandatory student orientation, mandatory placement, and no late registration. The LSSM is based on student, faculty, and administrator perspectives of student success and perceived barriers to student success specific to RCC. Data supporting those perspectives were collected through a series of student focus groups and a survey completed by faculty and the college president. This qualitative study applied Padilla's theoretical framework and associated concept modeling approach to examine perceived elements of student success as described by successful community college students at RCC. Padilla's theoretical framework and concept modeling approach to analysis of data is known as student success research because it focuses on how students succeed, as opposed to student departure research, which focuses on why students fail. Student departure research (e.g., Tinto, Pascarella, Rendon, and Roueche) has not improved completion rates of students at community colleges to a satisfactory level. Due to the continued poor rate of student completion, combined with the national dependence on community colleges to produce graduates prepared to enter the nation's workforce, community colleges must identify and institute comprehensive student success models. Successive studies using Padilla's theoretical framework have created LSSMs for urban and multicampus community colleges, high-minority-serving high schools, and Hispanic-serving universities. However, those studies used criteria that limited participation for many types of students. The goal of this study was to determine whether Padilla's local student success modeling approach is applicable to a rural community college environment, incorporating various types of community college students who were excluded from previous studies. It was concluded that students at RCC exhibited a high level of persistence, a strong work ethic, and effective time management skills.
