Book excerpt: Throughout the rice-growing areas of the world, rats and related species have attained major pest status. Rodent damage to rice is widespread throughout the rice-growing regions of the world, but its intensity varies from place to place and season to seson. Because much rice is grown on small farms, heavy damage in a few fields can be a serious economic problem for the individual farmer. A nearly overwhelming variety of methods for controlling rodents have been suggested, discussed, recommended, or tried. Unfortunately, little distinction is usually made between killing rats and protecting crops from damage. The major criterion for evaluating agricultural rodent control methods should be the degree of crop protection they afford. The process of protecting fields could be accomplished by killing rats, excluding them, or making the corp areas less suitable for rats to occupy. A variety of physical, chemical, and biological control methods have been suggested by various of methods for each situation should be based on cost, practicality, and cultural acceptability as well as on effectiveness. Rat control, like other forms of crop protection, should be considered as an integral part of the agricultural production process. Since the labor and capital available to each farmer are limited, extension workers have an important role in helping the farmer find efficient ways to allocate his time and resources to produce and protect his crop.

In the last two decades, the science and practice of rodent control has faced new legislation on rodenticides, the pests' increasing resistance to chemical control and the impact on non-target species, bringing a new dimension to this updated 2nd edition and making essential reading for all those involved in rodent pest control, including researchers, conservationists, practitioners and public health specialists.

Book excerpt: Rodent infestation poses a serious threat to smallholder farmers in both developed and developing countries where a large proportion of potential crop yield is lost. In Tanzania, the average annual yield loss of rice is estimated to be around 5,Äì12%. Management of rodent pests in Africa relies mostly on the use of rodenticides which, however, are often applied only when damage has already occurred rather than routinely. Rodenticides used in this way are rarely economically and ecologically sustainable for managing rodents in irrigated rice. A ,Äúcommunity-based Trap-Barrier-System (cTBS),Äù provides an alternative novel rodent control approach for controlling rodents in rice fields. This is basically a system where rodents are trapped in a rice field that is planted a short period earlier than the surrounding fields and therefore attracting rodents from a much wider area than the field itself. The system has proved very successful in irrigated rice fields in Tanzania, increasing rice yields in the intervention fields by 40.91%. A single cTBS can confer protection in up to 16 ha of irrigated rice field. Therefore, if scaled up and used widely, TBS has a great potential for managing rodent pests and improving yield in irrigated rice fields.

Book excerpt: The book covers the various aspects of the use of pesticides, their behavior, degradation, and impacts in wetland ricefields, and presents the results of surveys conducted in the Philippines and Thailand. It includes both bibliographic reviews and selected aspects of the experimental results of a research project on pesticide impacts in wetland ricefields. The first phase of the `Pesticide Impact' project was developed in the Philippines from 1989 to 1991. It was a multidisciplinary/collaborative approach involving scientists from IRRI, NRI (England), ORSTOM (France), UPLB (Philippines) who studied the effects of pesticides on the environment and on farmers' health, and the economical aspects of their use.

Book excerpt: "Australian crops are damaged by mice, black rats and four species of native rodents. There has been a mouse plague somewhere in the Australian grain belt every four years on average since 1900. In the last twenty years plagues have increased to one every year or two. The 1993-94 plague in south-east Australia cost the grains industry an estimated $65 million. Rat damage to Queensland sugarcane crops amounts to $2-9 million annually. Rodents also have significant social and environmental impacts and can spread disease to people and livestock." -- back cover.
