Download or read book NOL Hypersonic Tunnel No. 4 written by James E. Danberg and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: NOL's Hypersonic Tunnel No. 4 is a continuous blow-down hypersonic tunnel designed for research and development testing of models, instrumentation, and wind tunnel components. It can operate at Mach numbers from 5 to 10 with supply pressures up to 52 atmospheres and supply temperatures up to 1700 R. This report summarizes the pertinent aerodynamic design criteria and operating experience compiled during its first eleven years of operation. Included are descriptions of the major components and their performance along with the flight simulation capability of the facility and a bibliography of previously published reports. (Author).

Book Synopsis NOL Mach 18 Hypervelocity Research Tunnel by : Ray H. Cornett
Download or read book NOL Mach 18 Hypervelocity Research Tunnel written by Ray H. Cornett and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aerodynamic capabilities and physical characteristics of the Naval Ordnance Laboratory's Mach number 18 Hypervelocity Research Tunnel are described. This tunnel is a high-pressure, blowdown-type facility that uses nitrogen as the working gas. The facility provides a maximum test section Reynolds number of 0.2 million per meter (0.7 million per foot) at the maximum stagnation pressure of 700 atmospheres and a supply temperature of 2100 Kelvin. A forced-convection electric heater with a graphite heater element is used to achieve the required flow temperatures. The axisymmetric, contoured nozzle is 3.96 meters long with an exit diameter of 0.61 meters. Flow times are from one to four minutes.
Book Synopsis Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 Mach 7 Thermal Structural Facility Verification and Calibration by : John F. Lafferty
Download or read book Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 Mach 7 Thermal Structural Facility Verification and Calibration written by John F. Lafferty and published by . This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report summarizes the verification and calibration of the new Mach 7 Thermal Structural Facility located at the White Oak, Maryland, site of the Dahlgren Division, Naval Surface Warfare Center. This effort was in support of the development of a thermal structural ground testing capability for interceptor seeker windows and radomes. The new facility is located in the Hypervelocity Wind Tunnel No. 9 complex and uses common gas supply and vacuum source hardware. Test included the initial facility operation as well as a detailed calibration at three specific design points. Calibration data were collected using a Pitot-probe rake and a blunt sphere cone, each mounted at multiple locations in the test cell to fully characterize the test environment. The Thermal Structural Facility achieves Mach 7 flow conditions with freestream pressures and temperatures equivalent to ambient pressures and temperatures for altitudes between 38,000 and 67,000 ft (11.5 and 20.5 km) for test times up to 5 sec. This ground test facility provides the capability necessary to test full- scale intercepter seeker windows in a true aero-thermal environment without the need for scaling.

Book Synopsis Fluid Flow Analysis of a Hot-core Hypersonic-wind-tunnel Nozzle Concept by : John B. Anders
Download or read book Fluid Flow Analysis of a Hot-core Hypersonic-wind-tunnel Nozzle Concept written by John B. Anders and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hypersonic-wind-tunnel nozzle concept which incorporates a hot-core flow surrounded by an annular flow of cold air offers a promising technique for maximizing the model size while minimizing the power required to heat the test core. This capability becomes especially important when providing the true-temperature duplication needed for hypersonic propulsion testing. Several two-dimensional wind-tunnel nozzle configurations that are designed according to this concept are analyzed by using recently developed analytical techniques for prediction of the boundary-layer growth and the mixing between the hot and cold coaxial supersonic airflows. The analyses indicate that introduction of the cold annular flow near the throat results in an unacceptable test core for the nozzle size and stagnation conditions considered because of both mixing and condensation effects. Use of a half-nozzle with a ramp on the flat portion does not appear promising because of the thick boundary layer associated with the extra length. However, the analyses indicate that if the cold annular flow is introduced at the exit of a full two-dimensional nozzle, an acceptable test core will be produced. Predictions of the mixing between the hot and cold supersonic streams for this configuration show that mixing effects from the cold flow do not appreciably penetrate into the hot core for the large downstream distances of interest.
