Book excerpt: The design and initial performance of a 3 MW electric arc air heater are discussed. This arc will be used as a heat source in a true temperature wind tunnel designed, and currently under construction, for operation at Mach numbers between 3 and 12 at supply pressures of 5 to 150 atmospheres and total energy levels up to 5300 Btu/lb. The arc heater operates on 3-phase a.c. Its components, control systems and instrumentation are described in detail. The initial performance studies were carried out using a Mach number 3 nozzle with the flow expanding into the ambient atmosphere. These tests were carried out at supply pressures up to 45 atmospheres. The highest gas energy level obtained was 7700 Btu/lb. (Author).

Book excerpt: A method is developed for calculating the growth of a turbulent boundary layer at hypersonic Mach numbers. Excellent agreement with experimental results from axisymmetric nozzles has been obtained by the application of this method. The method utilizes a modification of Stewartson's transformation to simplify the integration of the momentum equation. Heat transfer is taken into account by evaluating the gas properties at Eckert's reference temperature and by using a modification of Crocco's quadratic for the temperature distribution in the boundary layer. A new empirical relation is used for the incompressible friction coefficient which agrees with experimental data over a Reynold's number range from 10(superscript 5) to 10(superscript 9).
