Book excerpt: Nogales inhabits La Frontera, the Arizona-Mexico border country that exists as much as a state of mind as a place. Here among the saguaro under the Sonoran desert sun came conquerors under the flags of Spain, Mexico, the United States, and the Confederate States. From the arrival of Fray Marcos de Niza in the Ambos Nogales territory in 1539 when Nogales was part of New Spain, through the marches of Conquistadores along Spain's El Camino Real or Royal Road, to the exploits of Apache warriors and the Mexican revolutionary Pancho Villa, Nogales has been at the center of life on the frontier. Nogales: Life and Times on the Frontier explores the rich history of this area seasoned by cultures from across the border and around the world. Tales of the bustling ranching, railroad, mining, military, and produce industries are brought to life through the eyes of figures like rancher Pete Kitchen and West Point's first African-American graduate Henry Ossian Flipper. These unique stories are highlighted by striking images from vintage postcards, period photographs, detailed maps, and other illustrations that chronicle the journey from lonely Spanish outpost to thriving modern gateway.

Book excerpt: In Nogales, Arizona, pampered California produce brokers in their hotels float lazily unaware, just yards from the tunnel that brings in immigrants and drugs. In Nogales, Sonora, old cobblestone neighborhoods meander into new ramshackle colonias towards the edge of the city, and a group of tunnel kids make a home in the house of a jailed drug lord."--BOOK JACKET.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you are a betrayed parent, a parent who cheated, or an adult child whose parent was unfaithful, reading this book will help you understand and courageously deal with the adverse effects of parental infidelity. In Parents Who Cheat, Ana Nogales, Ph.D., combines her reflections from her thirty-five years of clinical practice with her current research, which includes an unprecedented 'Parents Who Cheat Survey,' to reveal the profound effects on children and adult children wehn one parent betrays the other. What are the emotional consequences for the child—young or adult—when his or her parent cheats? What does infidelity teach children, and is there a difference between how boys and girls process and react to the circumstances? How can parents undergoing an infidelity crisis help their child cope with his or her reactions? How might adult children deal with their own parental infidelity-related issues? Parents Who Cheat explains how a child's perception of love and marriage can be forever altered, how self-esteem and trust are often severely damaged, and why adult children whose parents were unfaithful often choose unfaithful partners or become unfaithful themselves. Ana Nogales offers advice and practical solutions and points the way toward healing, forgiveness, and healthier and more trusting relationships with parents and partners.

Book excerpt: Capirotada, Mexican bread pudding, is a mysterious mixture of prunes, peanuts, white bread, raisins, milk, quesadilla cheese, butter, cinnamon and cloves, Old World sugar--"all this," writes Alberto Rios, "and things people will not tell you." Like its Mexican namesake, this memoir is a rich melange, stirring together Rios's memories of family, neighbors, friends, and secrets from his youth in the two Nogaleses--in Arizona and through the open gate into Mexico. The vignettes in this memoir are not loud or fast. Yet like all of Rios's writing they are singular. Here is the story about a rickety magician, his chicken, and a group of little boys, but who plays a trick on whom? The story about the flying dancers and mortality. About going to the dentist in Mexico because it is cheaper, and maybe dangerous. About a British woman who sets out on a ship for America with the faith her Mexican GI will be waiting for her in Salt Lake City. And about the grown son who looks at his father and understands how he must ovide for his own boy. This book's uncommon offering is how it stops to address the quiet, the overlooked, the every day side of growing up. Capirotada is not about prison, or famous heroes. It is instead about the middle, which is often the most interesting place to find news. Capirotada was selected as the 2009 ONEBOOKAZ by the Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records.

Book excerpt: Although Americans generally think that the U.S. Department of Homeland Security is focused only on preventing terrorism, one office within that agency has a humanitarian mission. Its Asylum Office adjudicates applications from people fleeing persecution in their homelands. Lives in the Balance is a careful empirical analysis of how Homeland Security decided these asylum cases over a recent fourteen-year period. Day in and day out, asylum officers make decisions with life-or-death consequences: determining which applicants are telling the truth and are at risk of persecution in their home countries, and which are ineligible for refugee status in America. In Lives in the Balance, the authors analyze a database of 383,000 cases provided to them by the government in order to better understand the effect on grant rates of a host of factors unrelated to the merits of asylum claims, including the one-year filing deadline, whether applicants entered the United States with a visa, whether applicants had dependents, whether they were represented, how many asylum cases their adjudicator had previously decided, and whether or not their adjudicator was a lawyer. The authors also examine the degree to which decisions were consistent among the eight regional asylum offices and within each of those offices. The authors’ recommendations, including repeal of the one-year deadline, would improve the adjudication process by reducing the impact of non-merits factors on asylum decisions. If adopted by the government, these proposals would improve the accuracy of outcomes for those whose lives hang in the balance.
