Book excerpt: n 1862, a young preacher in New Jersey attends a gathering in the town square where a speaker from the United States Christian Commission is preaching to the crowd. The speaker, Zachariah Owens, is calling for recruits to this new, evangelical service ministry for soldiers far away, fighting to save the Union. The young preacher, Noah Sawyers, feels the Lord calling him to join this organization Alive with excitement, he heads home to tell his wife, Mary of his decision. And so begins the emotional, spiritual and physical journey of Noah Sawyers as described in Angel Of Mercy: A Christian Commission Delegate in the Civil War. This Christian historical novel follows Noah from his comfortable home in New Jersey to the camps, battlefields and hospitals of South Mountain, Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Through his experiences, we learn about the work of the United States Christian Commission and also grow close to Noah, his wife Mary, the lovable Zachariah Owens and various spies, generals and soldiers. Through his war-time journey facing illness, death and challenges, Noah grows in his understanding of living in God's will, of his own strength and abilities and just what living by faith really means. Relive through Noah the challenges of life in the field, the gruesome reality of war and suffering, the meaning of friendship and discipleship and the rewarding work of responding to God's call.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the scholarly consensus has emerged that early Judaism should no longer be classified as a religion of legalistic works on righteousness, but rather defined primarily by God's covenant with Israel. In this work, it is argued, instead, that there is actually a tension in early Judaism between God as righteous judge and as merciful. As E. Sj berg maintained in his Gott und S nder im pal stinischen Judentum, in the sources used for a reconstruction of early Judaism, there are two mutually exclusive ways in which God is said to relate to human beings. First, God as righteous judge deals with human beings as they deserve. They are assumed to be morally free and responsible, and God judges and recompenses them in history and eschatologically. Not only are the wicked punished for their sins, but the righteous are also rewarded for their obedience. And second, God as merciful does not deal with human beings as they deserve. Rather, he removes the guilt resulting from disobedience to the Law, sometimes on the simple condition of repentance. This means that a person can escape the consequences of disobedience. The understanding of God in the sources vacillates between God as righteous judge and God as merciful, without coming down definitively on one side to the exclusion of the other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 2017 Manfred Lautenschlaeger Award for Theological Promise Winner of the 2017 The George A. and Jean S. DeLong Book History Book Prize The discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls revealed a world of early Jewish writing larger than the Bible, from multiple versions of biblical texts to "revealed" books not found in our canon. Despite this diversity, the way we read Second Temple Jewish literature remains constrained by two anachronistic categories: a theological one, "Bible," and a bibliographic one,"book." The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity suggests ways of thinking about how Jews understood their own literature before these categories had emerged. In many Jewish texts, there is an awareness of a vast tradition of divine writing found in multiple locations that is only partially revealed in available scribal collections. Ancient heroes such as David are imagined not simply as scriptural authors, but as multidimensional characters who come to be known as great writers who are honored as founders of growing textual traditions. Scribes recognize the divine origin of texts such as Enoch literature and other writings revealed to ancient patriarchs, which present themselves not as derivative of the material that we now call biblical, but prior to it. Sacred writing stretches back to the dawn of time, yet new discoveries are always around the corner. Using familiar sources such as the Psalms, Ben Sira, and Jubilees, Eva Mroczek tells an unfamiliar story about sacred writing not bound in a Bible. In listening to the way ancient writers describe their own literature-rife with their own metaphors and narratives about writing-The Literary Imagination in Jewish Antiquity also argues for greater suppleness in our own scholarly imagination, no longer bound by modern canonical and bibliographic assumptions.
