Book Synopsis Environmental Policies for Agricultural Pollution Control by : J. S. Shortle
Download or read book Environmental Policies for Agricultural Pollution Control written by J. S. Shortle and published by CABI. This book was released on 2001-09-05 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the environmental problems associated with agriculture, particularly the use of pesticides and chemical fertilizers and the disposal of animal waste. These have become major policy issues in many countries, with the main polluting effect being on water quality. As with other types of pollution, significant reductions in agriculture's contribution to water pollution requires the application of either enforceable regulatory approaches or changes in the economic environment, so that farmers adopt environmentally-friendly production practices. Providing a review and guide to the policy options and their economic administrative and political merits, the reader can develop an understanding of these options and their merits in the emerging policy context. The principal focus is on the developed world, particularly North America and Europe. The book is aimed at advanced students, researchers and professionals in agricultural economics and policy, and environmental and pollution sciences.

Book Synopsis Applicative Constructions by : David A. Peterson
Download or read book Applicative Constructions written by David A. Peterson and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the first systematic typological analysis of applicatives across African, American Indian, and East Asian languages. It is also the first to address their functions in discourse, the derivation of their semantic and syntactic properties, and how and why they have changed over time. Applicative constructions are typically described as transitivizing because they allow an intransitive base verb to have a direct object. The term originates from the seventeenth-century missionary grammars of Uto-Aztecan languages. Constructions designated as prepositional, benefactive, and instrumental may refer to the same or similar phenomena. Applicative constructions have been deployed in the development of a range of syntactic theories which have then often been used to explain their functions, usually within the context of Bantu languages. Dr Peterson provides a wealth of cross-linguistic information on discourse-functional, diachronic, and typological aspects of applicative constructions. He documents their unexpected synchronic variety and the diversity of diachronic sources about them. He argues that many standard assumptions about applicatives are unfounded, and provides a clear guide for future language-specific and cross-linguistic research and analysis.

Book Synopsis Functional Programming, Glasgow 1990 by : Simon L. Peyton Jones
Download or read book Functional Programming, Glasgow 1990 written by Simon L. Peyton Jones and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the papers presented at the 3rd Glasgow Workshop on Functional Programming which was held in Ullapool, Scotland, 13-15 August 1990. Members of the functional programming groups at the universities of Glasgow and Stirling attended the workshop, together with a small number of invited participants from other universities and industry. The papers vary from the theoretical to the pragmatic, with particular emphasis on the application of theoretical ideas to practical problems. This reflects the unusually close relationship between theory and practice which characterises the functional programming research community. There is also material on the experience of using functional languages for particular applications, and on debugging and profiling functional programs.

Book Synopsis High-level Petri Nets by : Kurt Jensen
Download or read book High-level Petri Nets written by Kurt Jensen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 724 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-level Petri nets are now widely used in both theoretical analysis and practical modelling of concurrent systems. The main reason for the success of this class of net models is that they make it possible to obtain much more succinct and manageable de scriptions than can be obtained by means of low-level Petri nets-while, on the other hand, they still offer a wide range of analysis methods and tools. The step from low-level nets to high-level nets can be compared to the step from assembly languages to modem programming languages with an elaborated type concept. In low-level nets there is only one kind of token and this means that the state of a place is described by an integer (and in many cases even by a boolean value). In high-level nets each token can carry complex information which, e. g. , may describe the entire state of a process or a data base. Today most practical applications of Petri nets use one of the different kinds of high-level nets. A considerable body of knowledge exists about high-level Petri nets this includes theoretical foundations, analysis methods and many applications. Unfortunately, the papers on high-level Petri nets have been scattered throughout various journals and collections. As a result, much of this knowledge is not readily available to people who may be interested in using high-level nets.
