Book excerpt: Software is an essential enabler for science and the new economy, but software often falls short of our expectations, remaining expensive and not yet sufficiently reliable for a constantly changing and evolving market. This publication, which forms part of the SoMeT series, consists of 41 papers, carefully reviewed and revised on the basis of technical soundness, relevance, originality, significance, and clarity. These explore new trends and theories which illuminate the direction of developments which may lead to a transformation of the role of software in tomorrow’s global information society. The book offers an opportunity for the software science community to think about where they are today and where they are going. The emphasis has been placed on human-centric software methodologies, end-user development techniques, and emotional reasoning, for an optimally harmonised performance between the design tool and the user. The handling of cognitive issues in software development and the tools and techniques related to this form part of the contribution to this book. Other comparable theories and practices in software science, including emerging technologies essential for a comprehensive overview of information systems and research projects, are also addressed. This work represents another milestone in mastering the new challenges of software and its promising technology, and provides the reader with new insights, inspiration and concrete material to further the study of this new technology.

Book excerpt: “People always say I’m going to look back on these days and laugh — why put it off?” When Angela Nissel found herself struggling financially while in college, instead of sulking, she decided to entertain herself by creating an online journal that chronicled her day-to-day trials and tribulations. Written with humor and intelligence, her “Broke Diary” quickly found an audience as people wrote to Angela to empathize with, console, and laugh with her about her experiences and even share their own. The Broke Diaries is the first complete compilation of her experiences, written in a voice that is funny, unique, and dead-on. On buying ramen noodles: I am sooooooo embarassed. I only have 33 cents. I (please don’t laugh) put the money on the counter and quickly attempt to dash out with my Chicken Flavored Salt Noodles. The guy calls me back! I look up instinctively, I should have run . . . Why didn’t I run???!! He tells me the noodles are 35 cents. I try to apologize sincerely. I thought the sign said 33 cents yesterday, so that’s all I brought with me. Could he wait while I ran home and get the 2 cents? I show him my student I.D. to let him know I am not a thief. He shakes his head and motions either for me to get the hell out of his store and never come back again or get the money as do come back. I don’t know. He said something like “Nyeh” and swiped his hand in my direction. I can’t translate hand motions well. The noodles: tasty!!!

Book excerpt: In this powerful book, journalist and film maker John Pilger strips away the layers of deception, dissembling language and omission that prevent us from understanding how the world really works. From the invisible corners of Tony Blair's Britain to Burma, Vietnam, Australia, South Africa and the illusions of the 'media age', power, he argues, has its own agenda. Unchallenged, it operates to protect its interests with a cynical disregard for people - shaping, and often devastating, millions of lives. By unravelling the hidden histories of contemporary events, Pilger allows us to read between the lines. He also celebrates the eloquent defiance and courage of those who resist oppression and give us hope for the future. Tenaciously researched and written with passion and wit, Hidden Agendas will change the way you see the world.
