Book excerpt: Over the past few years, New Jersey schools have achieved significant progress in providing breakfast to more low-income students, with a 55 percent increase from 2010 to 2014. However, in May 2014, 49 New Jersey school districts with high levels of poverty continued to lag in providing breakfast to their students. This two-page report lists districts that as of May 2014 had at least half of their students eligible for free- or reduced-price breakfast, but less than 31 percent receiving this all-important meal. In these districts alone, close to 50,000 of New Jersey's needy children did not receive school breakfast. If these 49 districts fed all eligible students each school day, the districts would receive an estimated total of $16 million more in federal funds to provide school breakfast each year--and their students would have a healthy morning meal that can help them succeed in school.

Book excerpt: The Influence and Predictability of Socioeconomic Factors of the 2018 PARCC Middle School ELA Scores in New Jersey By: Dr. Charlene F. Jones This quantitative research, The Influence and Predictability of Socioeconomic Factors of the 2018 PARCC Middle School ELA Scores in New Jersey, examines the predictive power of socioeconomic, parental, and school district factors on student academic achievement. The combined influence of parent education with a bachelor’s degree or higher and free- and reduced-price lunch factors demonstrate the highest statistical significance for predictability in this study. All fundamental variables utilized support a greater discussion on how we, as parents and educators, can influence standardized test results and ensure local education policies and recommendations therein are research-based and implemented effectively in diverse communities. Particularly during this new era, post-pandemic, we seek successful strategies to combat learning loss, increase educational opportunities, and predict, where possible, assessment results—all in support of the future of public education.

Book excerpt: From the James Beard Award winner, Top Chef Masters contestant, and acclaimed author comes this fun, festive, and highly caffeinated ode to the joys and rituals of the Southern breakfast, with over 125 recipes inspired by the author's popular restaurant in Oxford, Mississippi. John Currence is one of the most celebrated and well-loved chefs in the South. Among his string of highly successful restaurants in Oxford, Mississippi, Big Bad Breakfast holds a special place in diners' hearts: It is a gathering place where people from all walks come together to share the most important meal of the day, breakfast. Southerners know how to do breakfast right, and Currence has elevated it to an artform: dishes like Banana-Pecan Coffee Cake, Spicy Boudin and Poached Eggs, and Oyster Pot Pie are comforting, soulful, and packed with real Southern flavor. Big Bad Breakfast is full of delicious recipes that will make the day ahead that much better--not to mention stories of the wonderful characters who fill the restaurant every morning, and a meditation on why the Southern breakfast is one of America's most valuable culinary contributions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From viral Instagram sensation, lifestyle photographer, and mommy blogger Laura Izumikawa comes Naptime with Joey, a ridiculously delightful photo book of her now internet-famous daughter dressed up in various pop culture costumes—a perfect gift for new parents everywhere. Lights, Camera…Nap! Joey Marie wears many hats (or, rather, wigs): she’s dressed up as Inigo Montoya, Britney Spears, Beyoncé, Pikachu, Anna Wintour, Moana, and Barb from Stranger Things. She’s taken trips to Hawaii, baked croissants, and blasted off to the moon as an astronaut (at least, in her dreams). She’s held occupations such as pizza chef, aerobics instructor, and handy-dandy-fixer-upper (figuratively, of course). She’s inspired a parenting blog, been the face of her mom Laura Izumikawa’s Instagram account—and for the first time, she’s taken the leap from the ranks of internet-baby-snoredom to the pages of a book. Naptime with Joey is chockablock full of over a hundred deliciously adorable photos of Joey dressed up as various pop culture characters, movie stars, musicians, vacationers, and holiday-goers, making this the most fun, festive, and downright delightful gift under the sun!
