Book excerpt: The news media in the South Pacific may be small--but the region has a diverse and vibrant mass communications industry. Ranging from the PNG Post-Courier (circulation 41,000) and Fiji Times to the fortnightly Tuvalu Echoes and monthly Madang Watcher; from EMTV's nationwide broadcasts via the Indonesian Palapa satellite to Niue's tiny television unity; or the PNG National Broadcasting Commission's Kalang and Karai services to Tokelau's traffic-and-weather broadcasts; the media caters for an audience and readership scattered over many islands and atolls. In French Polynesia, for example, the radio and television stations broadcast to 160,000 people spread over an ocean territory as large as Europe. Niue has a population of barely 2000; Papua New Guinea has more than four million. In Nius Bilong Pasifik, 18 leading Pacific journalists, academics and media commentators explore the nature and problems of the contemporary Pacific mass communications industry. Edited by University of Papua New Guinea journalism lecturer and author David Robie, this is a unique book for Pacific journalism educators, students, sociology and political science scholars, media watchers and professional journalists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 1998 book examines a range of nineteenth-century European accounts from the Pacific, depicting Polynesian responses to imported metropolitan culture, in particular its technologies of writing and print. Texts designed to present self-affirming images of 'native' wonderment at European culture in fact betray the emergence of more complex modes of appropriation and interrogation by the Pacific peoples. Vanessa Smith argues that the Pacific islanders called into question the material basis and symbolic capacities of writing, even as they were first being framed in written representations. Examining accounts by beachcombers and missionaries, she suggests that complex modes of self-authorization informed the transmission of new cultural practices to the Pacific peoples. This shift of attention towards reception and appropriation provides the context for a detailed discussion of Robert Louis Stevenson's late Pacific writings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Foster shows us how seemingly banal activities like making a phone call, chewing betel nut, watching a Coke commercial may give important insights into the ways in which the nation is constructed, materialized or contested."—Orvar Löfgren, author of On Holiday: A History of Vacationing Why, in the current era of globalization, does nationality remain an important dimension of personal and collective identities? In Materializing the Nation, Robert J. Foster argues that the contested process of nation making in Papua New Guinea unfolds not only through organized politics but also through mundane engagements with commodities and mass media. He offers a thoughtful critique of recent approaches to nationalism and consumption and an ethnographic perspective on constructs of the nation found in official policy documents, letters to the editor, school textbooks, song lyrics, advertisements, and other materials. This volume will appeal to readers interested in the links among nationalism, consumption, and media, in Melanesia and elsewhere.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines race relations in Australia through various media representations over the past 200 years. The early colonial press perpetuated the image of aboriginal people as framed by early explorers, and stereotypes and assumptions still prevail. Print and television news accounts of several key events in recent Australian history are compared and reveal how indigenous sources are excluded from stories about their affairs. Journalists wield extraordinary power in shaping the images of cultures and people, so indigenous people, like those in North America, have turned away from mainstream media and have acquired their own means of cultural production through radio, television, and multimedia. This study concludes with suggestions for addressing media practices to reconcile indigenous and non-indigenous people. This study will appeal to students and scholars studying mass media, particularly journalism and public relations, Australian history, and sociology.
