Book Synopsis Nitric Oxide in the Kidney by : Jennifer M. Sasser
Download or read book Nitric Oxide in the Kidney written by Jennifer M. Sasser and published by Biota Publishing. This book was released on 2015-05-01 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitric oxide (NO) is a key regulator of various cellular signaling pathways throughout the body and plays an important role in renal function under normal physiological and pathophysiological conditions. NO plays a major role in the regulation of renal hemodynamics, tubuloglomerular feedback, sodium transport in the nephron, pressure natriuresis, and renal fibrosis and injury; moreover, a deficiency in NO is characteristic of chronic kidney disease in both human patients and in experimental animal models. The goal of this book is to highlight the actions of NO within the kidney and its effects on the regulation of renal blood flow and tubular transport.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The kidney is innervated with efferent sympathetic nerve fibers reaching the renal vasculature, the tubules, the juxtaglomerular granular cells, and the renal pelvic wall. The renal sensory nerves are mainly found in the renal pelvic wall. Increases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity reduce renal blood flow and urinary sodium excretion by activation of α1-adrenoceptors and increase renin secretion rate by activation of β1-adrenoceptors. In response to normal physiological stimulation, changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity contribute importantly to homeostatic regulation of sodium and water balance. The renal mechanosensory nerves are activated by stretch of the renal pelvic tissue produced by increases in renal pelvic tissue of a magnitude that may occur during increased urine flow rate. Activation of the sensory nerves elicits an inhibitory renorenal reflex response consisting of decreases in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity leading to natriuresis. Increasing efferent sympathetic nerve activity increases afferent renal nerve activity which, in turn, decreases efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity by activation of the renorenal reflexes. Thus, activation of the afferent renal nerves buffers changes in efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the overall goal of maintaining sodium balance. In pathological conditions of sodium retention, impairment of the inhibitory renorenal reflexes contributes to an inappropriately increased efferent renal sympathetic nerve activity in the presence of sodium retention. In states of renal disease or injury, there is a shift from inhibitory to excitatory reflexes originating in the kidney. Studies in essential hypertensive patients have shown that renal denervation results in long-term reduction in arterial pressure, suggesting an important role for the efferent and afferent renal nerves in hypertension. Book Synopsis Influence of Dietary Salt Intake on Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity in the Rat Kidney [microform] by : Badri Ahmadi Moridani
Download or read book Influence of Dietary Salt Intake on Nitric Oxide Synthase Activity in the Rat Kidney [microform] written by Badri Ahmadi Moridani and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 1996 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nitric oxide (NO), plays an important role in sodium excretion. The hypothesis that renal nitric oxide synthase (NOS) activity is directly related to salt intake was studied in rats fed low (0.05% NaCI, LSD), normal (0.3%, NSD), or high (8%, HSD) salt diet for 14 days. NOS activity was measured in kidney tissue by conversion of L-$\sp$C-arginine to L-$\sp$C-citrulline. Ca$\sp{2+}$-dependent NOS activity which was 10-20 times higher in the outer and inner medulla compared to cortex was similar in all dietary groups. HSD increased urinary nitrite/nitrate (U$\sb{\rm NOx}$) excretion significantly by 3 days, however no significant differences were observed in NOS activity, serum NOx, or clearance of creatinine. Inhibition of NOS activity in vivo abolished the increase in UNOx excretion seen with HSD, and decreased fractional excretion of sodium. It is concluded that HSD increases NO production by the kidney but this is not due to an induction of NOS enzyme.
