Book excerpt: Abstract: The effect of hydrologic conditions on nitrogen biogeochemistry was investigated in two identical 1-ha surface-flow created riverine wetlands in Columbus, Ohio, USA. These wetlands, created in 1993-1994, are fed with water from Olentangy River. For two years (2003-2004), both wetlands experienced seasonal (winter-spring) controlled hydrologic flood pulses followed by one year (2005) in which they received a steady flow rate of water. Nitrogen gas flux measurements were made in plots distributed along a transverse gradient (edge plots and high marsh plots with alternate wet and dry conditions, and low marsh plots and open water plots with permanent flooding). Highest average N2O fluxes were observed in high marsh plots followed by edge plots, open water plots, and low marsh plots. In permanently flooded plots without vegetation, nitrous oxide fluxes were low, regardless of flood pulse conditions. N2O fluxes were higher in plots with vegetation than in plots without vegetation only when plots were inundated. Denitrification in all plots was significantly correlated with soil temperature and was significantly correlated with the nitrate concentration in the inflow surface water in the growing season in permanently flooded zones. Highest mean denitrification rates were observed in the low marsh and open water zones followed by high marsh and edge zones. In permanently flooded areas, denitrification rates were significantly higher near the inflow than near the outflow. Denitrification appeared to be nitrogen limited in low marsh, high marsh and edge plots, but both carbon and nitrogen limited in open water. NO2− + NO3− mass retention was similar under pulsing and steady flow conditions. Total nitrogen (TN) retention was lower under pulsing than steady flow conditions as a result of an export of organic nitrogen occurred under pulsing conditions. Aboveground biomass productivity in the pulsing year was significantly lower than in the steady-flow flow. Belowground biomass productivities were similar in both years. Nitrogen accumulation in plants represented 54- 44% of total nitrogen removed. Denitrification accounted for 8-12 % of nitrate removed. Less than 1% of the total nitrogen removed was converted to N2O, regardless of hydrologic conditions.

Book excerpt: In recent years a number of studies have indicated that riparian buffers have a high efficiency of nitrogen removal from shallow groundwater flow systems. However, little work has focused on establishing what relative effect field drainage streams may have on allowing contaminated water to bypass these riparian buffer systems. Even less attention has been focused on how storm event hydrology may affect these systems in terms of nitrate flux. Three groundwater monitoring well transects were installed in a riparian buffer and a weir flow control structure was installed on a surface drainage bordering a waste application field at the Neuse River Waste Water Treatment Plant. This application field has been in use for over 20 years. Well water and surface water were sampled for a year beginning in February 2005. Samples were analyzed for nitrate, chloride, silicate, ammonium, and phosphate concentrations as well as natural abundance nitrate-nitrogen, nitrate-oxygen, water-oxygen, and water-hydrogen stable isotope ratios. Water quality measurements were made through the transition from dormant to growing season and from high to low water table gradients and elevations. The summer and fall of 2005 were a time of extreme drought in the region and allowed examination of low flow conditions and system recovery to normal flow patterns. The buffer groundwater ion concentrations and nitrogen isotope compositions remained extremely consistent throughout the different conditions. Nitrate concentration 10 m inside the buffer averaged 33.7 mgN/L and 20 m farther into the buffer at wells 6 m from the river edge averaged 0.30 mgN/L, for a nitrate reduction of 99.1% after factoring in rainwater dilution (approximately 34.8%) calculated from chloride data. This study indicates that even shallow groundwater systems at 3-5m of depth can experience high efficient nitrogen removal by denitrification in riparian buffer zones. The nitrogen removal capacities of the wetlands were estimated using mass balance and sediment-water microcosms for the 1991 and 1992 field seasons. The wetlands received two different loading rates in 1991, and three loading rates in 1992. Concentrations of nitrate were highest during high flow periods, and most of the annual nitrate load was associated with the spring time flows. All three wetlands were found to be net sinks for nitrate and two of the three wetlands were net exporters of organic nitrogen.

One potential solution to this problem is to increase nitrate removal in cities by providing locations where denitrification, a microbial process in which nitrate is reduced to N2 gas permanently removing nitrate from systems can occur. Accidental urban wetlands, wetlands that results from human activities, but are not designed or managed for any specific outcome are one such feature in the urban landscape that could help mitigate nitrate pollution through denitrification. The overarching question of this dissertation is: how do hydrology, soil conditions, and plant patches affect patterns of denitrification in accidental urban wetlands? To answer this question, I took a three-pronged approach using a combination of field and greenhouse studies. First, I examined drivers of broad patterns of denitrification in accidental urban wetlands. Second, I used a field study to test if plant traits influence denitrification indirectly by modifying soil resources. Finally, I examined how species richness and interactions between species influence nitrate retention and patterns of denitrification using both a field study and greenhouse experiment. Hydroperiod of accidental urban wetlands mediated patterns of denitrification in response to monsoon floods and plant patches. Specifically, ephemeral wetlands had patterns of denitrification that were largely unexplained by monsoon floods or plant patches, which are common drivers of patterns of denitrification in non-urban wetlands. Several plant traits including belowground biomass, above- and belowground tissue chemistry and rooting depth influenced denitrification indirectly by changing soil organic matter or soil nitrate. However, several other plant traits also had significant direct relationships with denitrification, (i.e. not through the hypothesized indirect relationships through soil organic matter or soil nitrate). This means these plant traits were affecting another aspect of soil conditions not included in the analysis, highlighting the need to improve our understanding of how plant traits influence denitrification. Finally, increasing species richness did not increase nitrate retention or denitrification, but rather individual species had the greatest effects on nitrate retention and denitrification.
