Book excerpt: What happened to that sunny outgoing child of eight? As parents of nine-year-olds often discover, nine is a tricky age. Children are more distant from Mother and Father; they're more independant and rely on friends for companionship, or they have a tendency to spend time alone. Some nines are boisterous and wild, others thoughtful and withdrawn. Helping parents learn how to cope with the unpredictable nine-year-old is the aim of this practical guide from the Gesell Institute. Nine-year-olds are hovering on the brink of adolescence, and this in part contributes to their up-and-down nature. Dr. Louis Bates Ames and Carol Chase Haber paint a vivid picture of the child at this age and offer useful advice to make life easier for parents and children alike.

This was a sensitive study of family life and the social environment of a large number of London children, together with an account of their developmental assessment by various test methods. She showed that variations of developmental performances were more closely related to the quality of family life than to social and economic factors. Dr Pollak has now re-investigated the same children at nine years of age and this book is a record of her findings. The differences in development which were noted at three years of age remain in the older children. Those children who, at three years of age, were underachievers, particularly in verbal and adaptive abilities, are the children who, at nine years, can still be identified by lower achieve ment at school. These results must be of important relevance to educationalists, and all concerned with the psychologists as well as to paediatricians welfare of children. We must all be disturbed by the failure of any children in our urban city centres to benefit from education and our anxieties must be heightened if, amongst the underachievers, there are particular groups who can be identified by their ethnic identities. In Britain, education in school occupies a relatively small part of a child's life. Dr Pollak has identified some of the factors in a child's wider experience and, especially, in the total home environment which are associated with the persistence of inferior performance.

This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this collection of miscellaneous essays and writings, the author reflects on the serenity of retirement living in the middle of his own private certified Forest Preserve and Wildlife Habitat in southeast Indiana, the inspiration it engenders to be creative, and the ability to focus his thinking. He finds it rewarding to share his perspective, but the selfish reason he writes is that it makes him a better person. When asked why he writes, Mr. Hough admits that writing helps keep his aging mind alert and head on straight. Sitting down in front of his laptop computer with a blank screen is challenging. He's inspired to unlock novel ideas in his mind, research them, and develop compelling techniques to put them together in writing and encouraged to place the result on the Internet for colleagues and friends to contemplate. Writing is the author's habit. Sometimes, he gets feedback; sometimes, he doesn't. He knows the value of free speech is priceless, and being a disabled veteran, keeping that freedom alive is inestimable. Retiring at the end of 1998, James Emerson Hough ended more than thirty-five years in private practice of the applied earth sciences as both a licensed professional geologist and licensed professional engineer. He is the geotechnical engineer of record on more than 3,700 projects requiring terrain evaluations, subterranean investigations, foundation analysis for earth-supported architectural structures and for engineering structures, analyses, reports, special studies, failure studies, explorations, inspections, laboratory testing, construction monitoring, and forensic services. Mr. Hough, the author or coauthor of numerous published technical papers and several technical books, possesses substantial expertise regarding slope stability, landslides, and landslide correction. My mind is like a garden, My thoughts are like seeds, I can grow flowers or I can grow weeds, I need to water them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story is about a nine year old boy given the opportunity to live on the streets of Philadelphia. He had to grow up through the most chaotic times in the history of America. Jim crow, Vietnam War, Gang Wars, Four assignations (John F. Kennedy Jr., Martin L. King Jr., Bobby Kennedy and Malcolm X), ( Civil Rights Movement) Race riots, the Love and Peace movement (Sex and Drugs Revolution) and Motown and Rock & Roll ( Music revolution). There were a lot of grown ups who did not survive those times. It's very interesting how this nine year old found his way through forty something years of fear, horror, torture, sex, drugs, people, places and things. Though the grace of GOD he is still keep, keeping on. This is the first book of a five part series. Series number one Raised By A Nine Year Old (King). The four other series are not titled as of yet. Please understand that this book was written with a lot of emotion. What I went through to get the words out was so devastating. It took a lot out of me, to recall those moments of time. I literally had to relive those moments of pain, horror, fear and torture. Some of those times were not as bad as others, but it was hard to do, just the same. This first book is about a boy caught up in time. A time he never under stood. This boy was pushed to grow-up a at time in his life, when he had no understanding of what he was about to go through. Everything came fast, untimed and shocking. He was shot out into life with no warning and no skills. He had to learn by trail and era. He is still carrying those traits with him today after over forty years. He grew up and became a man, with the absence of that little boy, who never got a chance to experience what it would have been like to be one. He was always forcing his self to go through the elements of life, always fighting, hoping and praying. Today I can say he survived by the skin of his teeth. The interesting thing about his survival is what, who, and how he went through these forty something years. In the series to come, you will learn about how he evolved, through those trying years. This boy live a life, that proves, that, when you are walking in the sand and one moment you look down and see two pairs of foot prints in the sand and for forty years of walking in that sand you only see one pair of foot steps. You know that you were carried through all those years. For that I am surely blesses. I know that I could not have walked through those forty years on my own. I stated earlier this boy had no warning and no skills. Thank GOD for GOD

Book excerpt: A dazzling and darkly comic memoir about coming of age in a black funeral home in Baltimore Sheri Booker was only fifteen when she started working at Wylie Funeral Home in West Baltimore. She had no idea her summer job would become nine years of immersion into a hidden world. Reeling from the death of her beloved great aunt, Sheri found comfort in the funeral home and soon had the run of the place. With AIDS and gang violence threatening to wipe out a generation of black men, Wylie was never short on business. As families came together to bury one of their own, Booker was privy to their most intimate moments of grief and despair. But along with the sadness, Booker encountered moments of dark humor: brawls between mistresses and widows, and car crashes at McDonald’s with dead bodies in tow. While she never got over her terror of the embalming room, Booker learned to expect the unexpected and to never, ever cry. Nine Years Under offers readers an unbelievable glimpse into an industry in the backdrop of all our lives.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to live confidently for Jesus in today's world. The church used to be recognized as a force for good, but this is changing rapidly. Christians are now often seen as the bad guys, losing both respect and influence. In our post-Christian culture, how do we offer the gospel to those around us who view it as not only wrong but possibly dangerous? And how do we ensure that the secular worldview does not entice us away with its constant barrage, online and elsewhere, of messages about self-determinism? Author Stephen McAlpine offers an analysis of how our culture ended up this way and explains key points of tension between biblical Christianity and secular culture. He encourages Christians not to be ashamed of the gospel as it is more liberating, fulfilling and joyful than anything the world has to offer. He also offers strategies for coping in this world, with its opposing values, and for reaching out to others wisely with the truth.

Chuck Elliot is a forty-nine-year-old family man, but in the blink of an eye, he finds himself morphed into a seventeen-year-old, transported back to the sixties along with his brother and three high school buddies. The middle-aged, accidental time travelers are shocked and bewildered by their jump back in time. How did they get there? And more importantly, how do they get back? As they piece together a truly unbelievable reality, Chuck suspects it is somehow related to the translator—a handheld device his eccentric neighbor, Professor Jonathon Cornelius, left him mysteriously upon his death. Now the younger version of the professor is their only hope if they're ever to return to their lives and loved ones. In the meantime, the five friends hatch a plan to try and blend in, reliving their high school days and making the most of their time Twenty-Nine Years from Home. Astounded by their physical transformations from receding hairlines and bulging spare tires to the gangly, long-haired teenagers of their youth, some revel in the opportunity to be young again and right past wrongs, while others, like Chuck, want nothing more than the life left behind. But if their time travel alters the past, will life as he knew it be compromised?

Book excerpt: Miguel Antonio Otero (1859-1944) not only distinguished himself as a political leader in New Mexico and lived out his life as a champion of the people, but he is also highly recognized for his career as an author. He published his legendary "My Life on the Frontier, 1864-1882," in 1935, followed by "The Real Billy the Kid: With New Light on the Lincoln County War" in 1936, "My Life on the Frontier, 1882-1897" in 1939, and "My Nine Years as Governor of the Territory of New Mexico, 1897-1906" in 1940. These books, of which this is one in Sunstone's Southwest Heritage Series, are filled with the raw power and intrigue of the Wild West written by one who lived it. One would expect no less from such a vibrant personality who filled the pages of his monumental history with the passionate memories of an exciting era. Otero was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His father, who bore the same name, and who was born in Valencia, New Mexico in 1829, had built up a stellar career in the East. Miguel Antonio Otero, Jr. was brought up in a family of wealth and influence, but he also experienced the hardships of growing up in a household that was always on the move. His family's sojourns took him from one town to another across Missouri, Kansas, Colorado, and New Mexico. During Miguel A. Otero's travels and frequent stopovers in Wild Western towns he came into contact with notorious outlaws like Clay Allison and popular lawmen such as Wild Bill Hickok, Pat Garrett, Elfego Baca, and other well known figures including Doc Holliday, William F. Cody ("Buffalo Bill"), General George A. Custer, and frontiersman Christopher "Kit" Carson. In fact, Otero was such an adventurous soul that he always sought out, or was in close contact with, anyone making headlines during the turbulent era he lived in. He even published a short lived newspaper called the "Otero Optic," which eventually became the "Las Vegas Daily Optic." He began his illustrious career in politics as Las Vegas City Clerk, San Miguel County probate clerk, county clerk, and recorder, and district court clerk. Then in 1892 President William McKinley appointed Miguel Antonio Otero as governor of the New Mexico territory where he served until 1906.
