Book excerpt: Although much has been written on the Afro-Catholic syncretic religions of Vodou, Candomble, and Santeria, the Spiritual Baptists--an Afro-Caribbean religion based on Protestant Christianity--have received little attention. This work offers the first detailed examination of the Spiritual Baptists or "Converted". Based on 18 months of fieldwork on the Island of St. Vincent (where the religion arose) and among Vincentian immigrants in Brooklyn, Zane's analysis makes a contribution to the literature on African-American and African Diaspora religion and the anthropology of religion more generally.

Book excerpt: A thrilling journey through China's dark criminal underworld, from a celebrated voice in Chinese literature When Hongyang is found dead after a night of debauched drinking, it looks as if his reign of terror has finally come to an end. Few in this insular community have much reason to mourn his passing: Hongyang is an infamous mob boss, a man with plenty of enemies. But now it seems that his years of crime have also earned him some very dangerous friends. As his funeral draws near, those who knew him come together to look back on a life characterised by corruption, deceit and a flair for violence. Their recollections will keep Hongyang's legacy alive, with terrifying consequences. From the master of Chinese noir fiction comes this explosive new novel about the power of one man, unravelled by a tangled web of secrets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many, December 26 is more than the day after Christmas. Boxing Day is one of the world’s most celebrated cultural holidays. As a legacy of British colonialism, Boxing Day is observed throughout Africa and parts of the African diaspora, but, unlike Trinidadian Carnival and Mardi Gras, fewer know of Bermuda’s Gombey dancers, Bahamian Junkanoo, Dangriga’s Jankunú and Charikanari, St. Croix’s Crucian Christmas Festival, and St. Kitts’s Sugar Mas. One Grand Noise: Boxing Day in the Anglicized Caribbean World delivers a highly detailed, thought-provoking examination of the use of spectacular vernacular to metaphorically dramatize such tropes as “one grand noise,” “foreday morning,” and from “back o’ town.” In cultural solidarity and an obvious critique of Western values and norms, revelers engage in celebratory sounds, often donning masks, cross-dressing, and dancing with abandon along thoroughfares usually deemed anathema to them. Folklorist Jerrilyn McGregory demonstrates how the cultural producers in various island locations ritualize Boxing Day as a part of their struggles over identity, class, and gender relations in accordance with time and space. Based on ethnographic study undertaken by McGregory, One Grand Noise explores Boxing Day as part of a creolization process from slavery into the twenty-first century. McGregory traces the holiday from its Egyptian origins to today and includes chapters on the Gombey dancers of Bermuda, the evolution of Junkanoo/Jankunú in The Bahamas and Belize, and J'ouvert traditions in St. Croix and St. Kitts. Through her exploration of the holiday, McGregory negotiates the ways in which Boxing Day has expanded from small communal traditions into a common history of colonialism that keeps alive a collective spirit of resistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scripturalizing the Human is a transdisciplinary collection of essays that reconceptualizes and models "scriptural studies" as a critical, comparative set of practices with broad ramifications for scholars of religion and biblical studies. This critical historical and ethnographic project is focused on scriptures/scripturalization/scripturalizing as shorthand for the (psycho-cultural and socio-political) "work" we make language do for and to us. Each essay focuses on an instance of or situation involving such work, engaging with the Bible, Book of Mormon, Bhagavata Purana, and other sacred texts, artifacts, and practices in order to explore historical and ongoing constructions of the human. Contributors use the category of "scriptures"—understood not simply as texts, but as freighted shorthand for the dynamics and ultimate politics of language—as tools for self-illumination and self-analysis. The significance of the collection lies in the window it opens to the rich and complex view of the highs and lows of human-(un-)making as it establishes the connections between a seemingly basic and apolitical religious category and a set of larger social-cultural phenomena and dynamics.

Book excerpt: In this book, the author debates the many environments exist within the Caribbean region. These environments include areas, such as politcs, economics, sports, security and safety and the likes. He is employing the leaders of the Caribbean to interate these areas in an effort to make the region as competitive as the rest of the world. Without integration it is likely that individual states will not prosper; therefore, regionalism is necessary. Hitherto, the economies of Caribbean states are not diverse enough to maintain sustainability for much longer if these countries remain as individual states. Combining every effort will reduce the chance of economic failure and enhance the region competitive position amongst the elites. This book also suggests how to implement regionalism and the many benefits to enjoy. Conversely, the author highlights some of the pitfalls of integration-a region comprising of varying cultures, ethnicities, languages, religion, demographics, levels of education, economic standards and competitiveness. Finally, this book takes a model from the EU, North America and other sub-regions around the world to illustrate how regionalism could be successful in the Caribbean.

Book excerpt: Three years, half a million miles of travel across the world, a huge number of first time visits, and a vast collection of new experiences and memories...This is the unique focus of Extraordinarily Rich Memories Of My First Time In....by Maurice Samuel. In it, he shares these personal experiences, that he wrote contemporaneously as emails to friends between 2007-2010. From playing the Pied Piper in Mumbai, swimming with sea lions in the Galapagos, being stopped by police on his way to Guantanamo, bathing at night in the Dead Sea, partying at Christmas in hyper-exclusive Mustique, horseback riding in the wilds of Cotopaxi volcano, whitewater rafting and zip-lining in Costa Rica, the ups and downs of Carnaval in Santa Cruz...and many, many more. Whilst the book’s focus is this period, he brings it up to date, with his more recent experiences from travels to places like Kazakhstan, where he is constantly asked for selfies, his struggles to leave Uzbekistan, and taking a two week cruise through South East Asia without knowing where it’s going from day to day. The book is richly illustrated with his personal photographs and videos.
