Book Synopsis Minority Rights and the National Question in Nigeria by : Uyilawa Usuanlele
Download or read book Minority Rights and the National Question in Nigeria written by Uyilawa Usuanlele and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-18 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a thematic study of key debates in the history of the ethnic politics, democratic governance, and minority rights in Nigeria. Nigeria provides a framework for examining the central paradox in post-colonial nation building projects in Africa – the tension between majority rule and minority rights. The liberal democratic model on which most African states were founded at independence from colonial rule, and to which they continue to aspire, is founded on majority rule. It is also founded on the protection of the rights of minority groups to political participation, social inclusion and economic resources. Maintaining this tenuous balance between majority rule and minority rights has, in the decades since independence, become the key national question in many African countries, perhaps none more so than Nigeria. This volume explores these issues, focusing on four key themes as they relate to minority rights in Nigeria: ethnic and religious identities, nationalism and federalism, political crises and armed conflicts.
Book Synopsis Warfare, Ethnicity and National Identity in Nigeria by : Toyin Falola
Download or read book Warfare, Ethnicity and National Identity in Nigeria written by Toyin Falola and published by Africa Research and Publications. This book was released on 2013 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysing the history of the connection between warfare, ethnicity and national identity, and their basis and dynamics from the pre-colonial period, Warfare, Ethnicity and National Identity in Nigeria shows how conflicts have shaped Nigerian societies. The book also interrogates the sense in which the failures of the post-colonial African state encourage ethnic barriers, and demonstrates how and why this development results in conflicts and insurgency wars. Using the example of Nigeria, the book proposes a new way forward.
Book Synopsis Politics of Democratic Breakdown by : Gangsheng Bao
Download or read book Politics of Democratic Breakdown written by Gangsheng Bao and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-05-30 with total page 361 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Democratic breakdown as a political and historic event can impact the fate of millions, if not hundreds of millions of people, by changing the political complexion of a country. This book attempts to systematically explain why democracies collapse. The author's main theoretical argument is based on the examination of two factors. One is political cleavages among voters. These can cause serious political conflicts and may lead to fierce political confrontation and major upheaval at the society level. The other revolves around the types of political and institutional arrangements under democratic regimes. Centrifugal democratic regimes are likely to weaken government capacity or state capacity, rendering governments incapable of effectively resolving political conflicts and, when these two factors come together, political conflicts are less likely to be controlled effectively. These situations can evolve into serious political crises and eventually lead to the collapse of democratic regimes. The empirical research of this book is based on a comparative historical analysis of Germany, Nigeria, Chile, and India. Examining democratic collapses from both theoretical and empirical perspectives, this book will be of interest to those engaged in the study of democracy, Political Science, Comparative Politics, and Political Theory.

Book excerpt: This book describes Nigeria's past and present political, social, and economic history as it relates to tribalism, colonialism, lack of political leadership and other dysfunctional behavior in society preventing Nigeria's democracy. It presents vital proposals for future Nigerian democracy and economic prosperity. The book advocates a two-party federalism, tribal nationalism and economic prosperity based on a participatory instead of rotational presidency. The study recommends an economic diversification in Nigeria's revenue sharing, tax systems, domestic economy and agriculture instead of the dependence on oil revenues. Lastly, the book defines the role of the military in the future of Nigeria's democracy.
Book Synopsis The Challenge to Racial Stratification by : Matthew Holden, Jr.
Download or read book The Challenge to Racial Stratification written by Matthew Holden, Jr. and published by Transaction Publishers. This book was released on 1994-01-01 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Political Science Review is the official publication of the National Conference of Black Political Scientists. This series, now entering its fourth volume, includes significant scholarly research reflecting the diverse interests of scholars from various backgrounds who use different models, approaches, and methodologies. The central focus is on politics and policies that advantage or disadvantage groups because of race, ethnicity, gender, and other major variables. In his introduction to this volume, Matthew Holden describes the rationale for the creation of American racial stratification, and boldly shows how American intellectuals have helped reinforce that stratification. Several chapters discuss conflicts in contemporary views of the United States, ranging from a belief in its being a free society to the historical reality of the nation's background as a slave society. Other chapters address the international problem of racial stratification, concentrating on Nigeria and South Africa.
