Book excerpt: The development of new catalytic materials to improve the activity and selectivity of catalytic reactions is an ongoing task for researchers due to the continual demand for cheaper, more energy efficient methods to produce both new and existing products. This dissertation focuses on developing base-metal catalysts for selective hydrogenation reactions. In particular, Ni-Zn intermetallic compounds (which are ordered arrangements of these two elements) are utilized for the selective semi-hydrogenation of acetylene, which is a high-volume industrial reaction that currently requires the use of precious metal catalysts. The poor catalytic properties of pure Ni are greatly improved through the addition of a second base metal, Zn, making the Ni-based catalysts behave more like precious metals. While we cannot perform alchemy, turning two base metals into an intermetallic material that behaves like a precious metal might be the closest we can come. The synthesis of well-defined materials and corresponding kinetic measurements utilizing isotopic labeling are combined with density functional theory calculations to highlight the reasons for the enhanced selectivity of Ni-Zn intermetallic catalysts. In situ structure-determination during catalyst synthesis helps to lay the framework for future intermetallic catalyst development. Developing new catalytic materials requires detailed knowledge of catalyst structure, because structure is related to function. New characterization methods that have the ability to provide better descriptions of catalysts have the potential to be used in many sub-fields of catalysis. To address this need, this dissertation also focuses on new catalyst characterization techniques using X-ray absorption spectroscopy. We use differential X-ray absorption fine structure to monitor the Ar-induced surface restructuring of Pd nanoclusters at 77 K, highlighting the ability of this technique to probe surface atoms of Pd nanoclusters. Furthermore, we use X-ray absorption near edge structure to identify second-shell coordination in Ti-based transition metal complexes.

Developments in manufacturing processes are largely driven by continued improvements in catalytic materials, which aim to increase production volumes while minimizing costs along with safety and environmental hazards. In order to achieve these goals, however, a rational approach in catalyst design must be pursued that aims to understand and build upon the fundamental structural, electronic, and chemical properties governing catalytic performance. To that purpose, the work presented in this dissertation makes use of kinetic experiments, theoretical models, and advanced characterization techniques to generate a fundamental understanding of noble metal surfaces employed in a variety of catalytic reaction systems. In Chapter 2, we discuss the use of N2 physisorption, CO chemisorption, and NH3 temperature programed desorption to evaluate the effect of support acidity on the reactivity profiles of various zeolite-supported Pt and Pt-Sn catalysts for the non-oxidative coupling of methane to ethylene and aromatics. Reactivity studies for Pt-Sn/H-ZSM-5 catalysts at 973 K showed that, while all catalysts produced ethylene as the primary product, increasing support acidity led to an increase in naphthalene selectivity at the expense of benzene selectivity. Volcano-shaped profiles observed for the generation of aromatic products suggest that the formation of a reactive hydrocarbon pool on acidic support surfaces could be responsible for the oligomerization of ethylene. Notably, the Pt-Sn/H-ZSM-5 (SiO2:Al2O3 = 50) catalyst was found to be comparable to the state-of-the-art Mo/H-ZSM-5 catalysts in terms of carbon product generation and resistance to coke formation. In Chapter 3, x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was used to highlight the effect of local electronic and structural environments in specially synthesized metallic catalysts. The local coordination and nearest-neighbor distance of Pd species were evaluated to understand metal dispersion and the effect of catalyst support on the extent of bimetallic particle formation in Pd, AgPd, CuPd, and AuPd catalysts synthesized by controlled surface reactions (CSR) for a variety of amination, hydrodechlorination, and hydrogenation reactions. Near-edge structure analyses were also used on these Pd catalysts, as well as on a set of Mo-containing multi-metallic catalysts prepared by atomic layer deposition (ALD) for synthesis gas conversion, to understand catalyst reducibility along with potential support and hydrogen spillover effects on the extent of metal reduction. Chapter 4 evaluates the effects of catalyst support and pretreatment conditions on the hydrogenation of acetone over SiO2-, Al2O3-, and ZSM-5-supported platinum catalysts. Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts were found to have specific conversion rates and turnover frequencies that were 2 - 3 orders of magnitude higher than those observed over Pt/SiO2 and Pt/Al2O3 catalysts, regardless of zeolite acidity or pretreatment conditions. For Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts, the higher activity was achieved by increasing calcination and decreasing reduction temperatures, likely due to the effects of these treatments on the morphology of the platinum particles. CO-FTIR measurements showed a shift to higher frequencies of the Pt-CO band in Pt/ZSM-5 catalysts compared to Pt/SiO2, which alluded to the interactions between Pt and the porous zeolite structure as a source of the activity enhancements observed. Chapter 5 introduces the use of transient kinetics studies and theoretical modeling to explore the importance of surface coverage effects in the hydrogenation of acetone over platinum. Transient models based on steady-state microkinetics using static and dynamic inclusion of surface coverage via the Langmuir and Bragg-Williams approximations, respectively, predicted notable differences in the decay profiles of the most abundant reactive intermediate (MARI) from the catalytic surface. Experimental studies using steady-state isotopic transient kinetic analysis (SSITKA) methods served to validate the theoretical predictions for transients induced by complete acetone removal from or its substitution in the reactant feed and provided tangible evidence for the importance of surface coverage effects in understanding the reactivity of platinum catalysts for acetone hydrogenation. Lastly, Chapter 6 addresses possible future research directions in the field of transient kinetics studies.

Various nickel precursor salts were used for the preparation of catalyst precursors. In the precursor state, the catalysts were characterized using nitrogen physisorption, mercury porosimetry, infrared, and X-ray diffraction spectroscopy. The reducibility of catalyst precursors was evaluated using hydrogen temperature programmed reduction. Hydrogen chemisorption and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements were performed with the aim of characterizing the chemical state of the catalyst precursors. This research was focused on the study of some major factors on the state, dispersion and reducibility of a deposited Ni2+ phase by the combined use of mentioned experimental techniques. We have examined the influence of the nature of support and the use of modifiers on activity of nickel-based catalysts in the partial hydrogenation of sunflower and soybean oils. Nitrogen physisorption and mercury porosimetry data showed that synthesis operating conditions and pore structure of supports have a profound effect on the textural properties of catalyst precursors. The analysis of infrared and X-ray diffraction spectra showed the existence of chemical species and phases which indicate the different extent of interaction between the support and the active metal. Temperature programmed reduction study revealed that the reduction features depend on the identity of the nickel precursor salt and its interaction with the support. A stronger interaction of the supported Ni2+ phase with support hinders the reduction of catalyst precursors. Hydrogen chemisorption results showed the presence of nickel crystallites varying from 5 to 47 nm in size. The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data confirmed the formation surface species with different strength of interaction and different nickel crystallite sizes. The hydrogenation results showed significant differences, depending on the support and the modifier, as well as structural characteristics of reduced catalyst precursors. The results show the importance of modifiers in the control of the activity and selectivity of the partial hydrogenation process. The developed kinetic models of the hydrogenation of soybean and sunflower oils over studied catalytic systems were found useful in the prediction of the rate of reactions, product selectivity and catalytic activity.

Book excerpt: The subject of this research project was to investigate the catalytic properties of a new class of materials, transition metal carbides and nitrides, for treatment of coal liquid and petroleum feedstocks. The main objectives were: (1) preparation of catalysts in unsupported and supported form; (2) characterization of the materials; (3) evaluation of their catalytic properties in HDS and HDN; (4) measurement of the surface properties; and (5) observation of adsorbed species. All of the objectives were substantially carried out and the results will be described in detail below. The catalysts were transition metal carbides and nitrides spanning Groups 4--6 in the Periodic Table. They were chosen for study because initial work had shown they were promising materials for hydrotreating. The basic strategy was first to prepare the materials in unsupported form to identify the most promising catalyst, and then to synthesize a supported form of the material. Already work had been carried out on the synthesis of the Group VI compounds Mo2C, Mo2N, and WC, and new methods were developed for the Group V compounds VC and NbC. All the catalysts were then evaluated in a hydrotreating test at realistic conditions. It was found that the most active catalyst was Mo2C, and further investigations of the material were carried out in supported form. A new technique was employed for the study of the bulk and surface properties of the catalysts, near edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS), that fingerprinted the electronic structure of the materials. Finally, two new research direction were explored. Bimetallic alloys formed between two transition metals were prepared, resulting in catalysts having even higher activity than Mo2C. The performance of the catalysts in hydrodechloration was also investigated.

The results for FTIR were identification of Si-O-Si functional group indicating the absortion of silica inside SBA-15 support. Beside that, the identification of metal inside SBA-15 was determined by comparing the pure SBA-15 with the incorporated metal on SBA-15. For SEM analysis the image shows that the rope like domain aggregated to wheat-like microstructure. For this research, the characterization of the catalyst by selecting Zn as promoter have quiet similar characterization with noble metal that have been already investigate.

Book excerpt: Increases in global energy demand and rising levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide demand renewable alternatives to fossil fuels as the primary energy sources of the 21st century. Solar energy is by far the most abundant renewable energy resource, yet its widespread use has been hampered by a lack of suitable methods to store energy from sunlight in a cheap and efficient manner. Solar driven water splitting is a promising method of storing solar energy, but a critical bottleneck in developing efficient photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting systems lies in the kinetic sluggishness of the water splitting reactions, particularly the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). In this thesis the structural and mechanistic underpinnings for the activity of a promising nickel-based oxygen evolving catalyst (OEC) are discussed. The catalyst is particularly attractive as a result of the simplicity of its preparation as a thin film from aqueous borate-buffered solutions of Ni2 . Electrochemical and in situ X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES) studies of this nickel-borate (Ni-Bi) catalyst indicate that upon initial electrodeposition, Ni centers in the film exist predominantly in the +3 oxidation state and the as-deposited material is largely inactive towards the OER. Catalytic activation is achieved by anodization of the as-deposited material in concentrated borate buffer, pH 9.2, a process which serves to oxidize the nickel centers to a mixed-valence Ni(II/IV) state. Extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy studies indicate that Ni-Bi is comprised of nanometer-sized clusters of edge sharing NiO6 octahedra. A structural transformation is observed during anodization that is akin to that observed in the [beta]-NiOOH-[gamma]-NiOOH transformation, challenging the long-held view that the phase that is the most catalytically active towards the OER is the all-Ni(III) [rho]-NiOOH. Electrokinetic studies indicate that the as-deposited Ni-Bi exhibits a Tafel slope close to 2.3 x 2RT/F, consistent with a turnover-limiting electron transfer (ET) from the geometrically distorted low-spin d7 Ni(III) state. Upon anodization to the mixed valence Ni(III/IV) state and elimination of geometric distortion, ET from the resting state becomes more facile resulting in a low Tafel slope of 2.3 x RT/2F, indicative of a rapid two-electron pre-equilibrium followed by a rate limiting chemical step, likely O2 formation. Anodized Ni-Bi also exhibits an inverse third order dependence in proton activity and inverse first order dependence in borate anion. This kinetically-relevant two-electron, three-proton proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) equilibrium prior to rate limiting O2 formation forms the mechanistic basis for the pHdependent difference in activity between Ni-Bi and its cobalt-based analog, which contrarily mediates oxygen evolution via a kinetically-relevant one-electron, one-proton PCET transformation.
