Book excerpt: Different kinds of methods such as Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD), Physical Vapor Deposition (PVD), Sol-Gel Deposition (SGD), Thermal Spray Deposition (TSD), Jet Vapor Deposition (JVD), Triboadhesion Deposition (TAD), & Electroless Deposition (ELD) were used for the coating of metal oxides on glass substrates but it was found that Electroless Deposition is the most effective and common method for deposition of metal oxides on glass substrate due to its unique characteristics. Effectiveness of deposition was studied by the stability of metal oxides (Nickel & Copper Oxides) layer on glass substrate. Stability was measured by comparing the duration of crack formation at different temperatures and by changing the composition of metallic & reducing agents solutions, on glass substrate. Cracks formation was noted and measure with the help of High Efficient Microscope. Metallic & Reducing agent solutions properties were also noted by preparing them with different methods. Reducing agents that commonly used in deposition are hydrogen compounds, in which hydrogen atom is linked to phosphorus, nitrogen, and carbon i.e, Sodium Hypophosphite, Dimethylamine-borane, Hydrazine and Formaldehyde

Book excerpt: In engineering, there are often situations in which the material of the main component is unable to sustain long life or protect itself from adverse operating environments. Moreover, in some cases, different material properties such as anti-friction and wear, anti-corrosive, thermal resistive, super hydrophobic, etc. are required as per the operating conditions. If those bulk components are made of such materials and possess those properties, the cost will be very high. In such cases, a practical solution is surface coating, which serves as a protective barrier to the bulk material from the adverse environment. In the last decade, with enormous effort, researchers and scientists have developed suitable materials to overcome those unfavorable operating conditions, and they have used advanced deposition techniques to enhance the adhesion and surface texturing of the coatings. Advanced Surface Coating Techniques for Modern Industrial Applications is a highly sought reference source that compiles the recent research trends in these new and emerging surface coating materials, deposition techniques, properties of coated materials, and their applications in various engineering and industrial fields. The book particularly focuses on 1) coating materials including anti-corrosive materials and nanomaterials, 2) coating methods including thermal spray and electroless disposition, and 3) applications such as surface engineering and thin film application. The book is ideal for engineers, scientists, researchers, academicians, and students working in fields like material science, mechanical engineering, tribology, chemical and corrosion science, bio-medical engineering, biomaterials, and aerospace engineering.

Book excerpt: Electroplating and Electrochemicals, industries shimmering with growth and profitability potential, are truly riveting. Electroplating, an intricate process, involves the electrodeposition of a svelte metallic stratum onto diverse substrates utilizing electric currents. This technique entails submerging the intended object, the substrate, into an electrolytic bath brimming with metal ions and, through the application of an electric current, achieves a homogeneous metallic veneer. Conversely, Electrochemicals are birthed from electrochemical reactions. These intricate reactions are characterized by the transference of electrons among distinct compounds within an electrolytic milieu. Through the deliberate orchestration of electron flow, a plethora of chemical reactions are catalyzed, culminating in the synthesis of targeted chemicals. This methodology finds its application across a spectrum of industries, encompassing pharmaceuticals, agriculture, and energy storage sectors. The global electroplating market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 5.5%. The growth in the market can be attributed to the increasing demand for electroplated products from various end-use industries, such as automotive, electrical & electronics, aerospace & defense, Jewellery and machinery parts & components. In addition, the growing awareness about corrosion protection and decorative finishes is also propelling the growth of this market. Book excerpt: Power ultrasound has been used for many years in two specific industrial areas: cleaning and plastic welding. Over the last ten years an increasing interest has been shown in its potential for use over a much wider range of chemistry and processing which has been grouped together under the general title of sonochemistry. Most of these uses depend on the generation of acoustic cavitation in liquid media but this text, while underlining the importance of the physics and mathematics of cavitation, mainly concentrates on applications of the technology. After an introduction to the topic and some historical background to the uses of power ultrasound the general principles of acoustic cavitation are explored including some background physics, bubble dynamics and factors which influence cavitation. The remainder of the book incorporates a series of applications of sonochemistry which illustrate the types of physical and chemical effects of ultrasonically induced cavitation which will interest chemists and engineers alike. Amongst the major topics included are chemical synthesis, environmental protection and remediation of water, sewage and soils, polymer synthesis and processing, electrochemistry including both analytical and synthetic aspects and plating. The final chapter reviews the range of ultrasonic equipment available in the laboratory and the progress made towards the scale-up of sonochemistry. The level is introductory to semi-advanced and no topic has been taken to a particularly specialist level since it is intended that this should be of general interest to readers with a scientific background.

Book excerpt: As an instructor in various finishing courses, I have frequently made the statement over the years that "In the field of metal finishing there is very little black and white, just a great deal of grey. It is the purpose of the instructor to familiarize the student with the beacons that will guide him through this fog. " To a very considerable extent, a handbook such as this serves a similar purpose. It is also subject to similar limitations. Providing all the required information would result in a multi-volume encyclopedia rather than a usable handbook. In the pages that follow, you will therefore find frequent references to other sources where more detailed explanations or information can be found. The present goal is proper guidance and the provision ofthe most frequently required facts, not everything that is available. In the 13 years since the last edition, changes in the finishing industry have been profound but in one sense have resulted in simplifying matters rather than complicating them. Because technology has advanced to a level of complexity rendering "home brew" impracti cal in many cases, dependence on proprietary compounds has become common. Therefore, detailed solution compositions are often no longer significant or even practical. It is thus more important to provide instruction about the factors that affect the choice of the most suitable type of proprietary material.
