Book Synopsis Honour, Mana, and Agency in Polynesian-European Conflict by : Annette Wilkes
Download or read book Honour, Mana, and Agency in Polynesian-European Conflict written by Annette Wilkes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Focusing on the era of "first encounters" in Polynesia, this book provides a fresh look at some of the early contacts between indigenous people and the captains and crew of European ships. The case studies chosen enable comparison of New Zealand Māori–European transactions with similar Pacific ones. The book examines the conflict situations that arose and the reasons for physical violence, highlighting the roles of honour, mana, and agency. Drawing on a range of archival materials, sailor and missionary journals, as well as indigenous narratives, Wilkes applies an analytical method typically used for examining much more recent conflict. She compares different ways of "seeing" and "knowing" the world and reflects on the reasons for poor decision-making amongst all the social actors involved. The evidence presented in the book strongly suggests that preventing violence – promoting and negotiating peace – happens most effectively when mana and honour are acknowledged between parties.
Book Synopsis Na to Hoa Aroha by : Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata
Download or read book Na to Hoa Aroha written by Sir Apirana Turupa Ngata and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Sir Apirana Ngata and Sir Peter Buck (Te Rangi Hiroa) wrote frequently and often very long letters to each other for many years. Ngata was a Member of Parliament and for some years a cabinet minister. Buck was a doctor who became an anthropologist and eventually Director of the B.P. Bishop Museum in Honolulu. Their letters, besides being a personal record of their lives, comment on public events and on the development of anthropology in the Pacific. The two were deeply Māori, always aware of their differences form the Pakeha world in spite of their success within it, and their reflections on Māori culture and Māori affairs remain topical in the very different climate of today. The letters are published in three volumes, of which this is the last."--Back cover.

Book excerpt: Drawing on a wide range of sources in both English and Maori, this study explores the entrepreneurial activity of New Zealand's indigenous Maori in the early colonial period. Focusing on the two industries—coastal shipping and flourmilling—where Maori were spectacularly successful in the 1840s and 1850s, this title examines how such a society was able to develop capital-intensive investments and harness tribal ownership quickly and effectively to render commercial advantages. A discussion of the sudden decline in the &“golden age&” of Maori enterprise—from changing market conditions, to land alienation—is also included.
