Download or read book Retrospective written by Michael Tice and published by bd-studios.com. This book was released on 2017-12-05 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With more than 80 reproductions of his work, Retrospective is the first published overview of Michael Tice’s career. The book spans over five decades from the 1970’s to the present day. Tice’s early works are rooted in a sort of domestic surrealism that evolves into a more complex exploration of male sexuality and gender roles. Many of his images can be seen as a critique of the “American dream.” His enduring interests in the domestic space, childhood innocence, and cultural nostalgia combined with his masterful use of color and texture brings to light an American past that, perhaps, only existed within the surreal landscape of the viewers mind to begin with.
Book Synopsis The Contemporary Art Gallery by : David Carrier
Download or read book The Contemporary Art Gallery written by David Carrier and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone who looks at contemporary art is familiar with galleries. But visual features of these mysterious temples tend to be taken for granted. The basic purpose of this book is to enliven the reader’s latent knowledge of galleries, including architectural motifs, the intended impression that is conveyed to the visitor, and human interactions within them. The contemporary art world system includes artists’ studios, art galleries, homes of collec-tors and public art museums. To comprehend art, one needs to understand these settings and how it travels through them. The contemporary art gallery is a store where luxury goods are sold. What distinguishes it from stores selling other luxuries – upscale clothing, jewelry, and posh cars – is the nature of the merchandise. While much has been written about the art, this book uncovers the secretive culture of the galleries themselves. The gallery is the public site where art is first seen – anyone can come and look for free. This store, a commercial site, is where aesthetic judgments are made. Art’s value is determined in this marketplace by the consensus formed by public opinion, professional re-viewers and sales. The gallery, then, is the nexus of the enigmatic, billion dollar art world, and it is that space that is dissected here. The first chapter briefly describes the beginnings of the present contemporary art gallery. The second presents the experience of gallery going, presenting summary accounts of vis-its to some contemporary galleries. The third expands and extends that analysis, with de-tailed close up descriptions and comparative evaluations of many diverse contemporary galleries, in order to identify the challenges provided by these marvelous places. Then the fourth chapter indicates why, in the near future, due to the proliferation of myriad art fairs and online platforms extant today, such galleries might disappear altogether.

Book Synopsis J.B. Murray and the Scripts and Spirit Forms of Africa by : Licia Clifton-James
Download or read book J.B. Murray and the Scripts and Spirit Forms of Africa written by Licia Clifton-James and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-17 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Providing an excellent example of why folk artists can be appreciated as carriers of knowledge, even if they are unaware of it, this book could change the ways we understand and appreciate American folk arts. Connecting a sharecropper from Georgia in the Southern United States to a protector and healer in Touba, Senegal, West Africa, the holy city of Mouridism, and the final resting place of its founder, Shaikh Ahmadou Bàmba Mbàcke, it makes an interesting link while examining the cultural aspects of two very different and yet similar paths of life. Historians and art historians alike will find this investigation of African American art and folk culture both interesting and insightful. Not only does this book trace the characteristics of art through the African Diaspora, but it also traces Islam through those same diasporic transportations of colonial exploration and slavery.
Book Synopsis Focus on the Media by : John Northrop, Jr.
Download or read book Focus on the Media written by John Northrop, Jr. and published by The Institute for Southern Studies. This book was released on with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The South has a remarkable record of producing more than its share of talented writers. Names like Faulkner, O'Connor, Wolfe, Warren, Welty, readily come to mind. Less noticed, however, is the region's equally distinguished contribution in the field of journalism. Among national broadcasters, editors and writers who started in the South are Tom Wicker, Walter Cronkite, David Brinkley, Clifton Daniel, Willie Morris, Robert Sherrill, Nelson Benton, Charles Kuralt, Larry King, Marshall Frady, Frank McGee. Why has the South produced so many creative journalists — and why would so many go North? We can't be sure. But a couple of thoughts come to mind. First, Southerners do seem to have a certain romance with the written and spoken word. There is a relish for sounds, unique expressions, and the embellished story. Reporting— like conversation — has always demanded more than the exchange of a few facts, and many of our brethran have been only too willing to turn their preoccupation with language and penchant for irrelevant detail into successful careers.

Download or read book Annabelle Collett written by Kathie Muir and published by Wakefield Press. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annabelle Collett (1955-2019) was a South Australian designer and artist whose work embraced art, design and craft. Her fashion designs and particularly her dramatic knitwear produced under the Ya Ya Oblique Clothing label attained international recognition. Her work also encompassed furniture design, graphics, costume and interior design, public art and environments. From the early 1990s Annabelle concentrated on making sculptural art pieces about the human form and its coverings, looking at the function and cultural meaning of attire with reference to ideas about gender, the body and sexuality. In more recent years Collett also investigated notions of camouflage, disguise, pattern and the affect of disruptions to pattern. She is also known for a series of works with recycled and found plastics that focussed on repurposing waste and challenged the widespread adoption of single-use plastics. Having been based in Adelaide most of her career, in 2009 she moved to Clayton Bay where she enjoyed a rich collaboration with communities in the Alexandrina region as well as pursuing her own practice.
