Book excerpt: On a tenebrous winter morning in Denver, Colorado, Leo Jenkins felt the weight of the world crushing him. Leo has a decision to make--maintain a comfortable position in a career he's no longer passionate about--or take a massive leap of faith. Giving up everything he's ever known, Jenkins sells his business, purges every possession that won't fit into a single backpack and sets off into the world in pursuit of answers. Equal parts social philosophy and travel adventure, First Train Out of Denver takes the reader on an around the world quest for meaning in a seamlessly senseless world. Along the way Leo accepts a challenge from another former Army Ranger to see how far they can travel together in three weeks with nothing but a backpack and one hundred dollars to raise awareness and funds for a veteran charity. By any means necessary, the two manage to traverse two continents and film an award-winning documentary along the way. In true nomadic hobo fashion, the pair stow away on coal trains, talk their way onto a boat, hitch rides, and walk their way over eight thousand miles in twenty-one days, raising nearly thirty-thousand dollars for their fellow veterans. Leo's personal journey continues through Eastern Europe, Thailand, Australia, New Zealand and beyond. Upon arrival in Alaska, Jenkins allots himself twenty-four hours to find and buy a vehicle to drive south, continuing his exploration of not just the world, but of the mind. As he seeks to finish a goal to drink a beer in every state, inadvertently, he embraces the "van life." First Train Out of Denver brings the laugh-out-loud, gritty Ranger humor readers loved in his first book, Lest We Forget, and combines it with the raw, unrelenting introspection readers related to in his second book, On Assimilation.

Book excerpt: A tender but insightful true history of what makes the alumni of the University of Maryland, Munich Campus so special. This sequel to Bavarian Crème continues to be occasionally outrageous, sometimes hilarious, but always entertaining. Like its (younger) sister campuses in Augsburg and Mannheim, UMMC was a magical place created under unique circumstances. In 2004, after a 54-year tradition, the last of these extraordinary two-year residential campuses will fade away into history. Everyone affiliated with the University of Maryland overseas can't help but to have come away from the experience uniquely tied to a special group like no other. These are some of their stories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawn from intimate interviews with 14 modern-day "steel rail nomads," One More Train to Ride provides a revealing picture of today's American hobo. Interspersed with their stories are original poems and songs echoing the ancient lyricism and loneliness of life on the road. Their connections with the past make the experiences of these hoboes even more striking, as they ride freight trains and jungle up in hobo camps, light years away from the 21st-century cyberworld -- yet touching the very core of American freedom and individualism. Cliff Williams skillfully elicits details of family background, motives, and clear insights into the daily life and philosophy of the modern hobo. With its evocative link to the past, One More Train to Ride continues a long tradition of books on hobo oral history, including Nels Anderson's The Hobo (1923) and Thomas Minehan's Boy and Girl Tramps of America (1934).

Book excerpt: A National Book Award-winning satire about the unchecked power of American capitalism, written more than three decades before the 2008 financial crisis. At the center of J R is J R Vansant, a very average sixth grader from Long Island with torn sneakers, a runny nose, and a juvenile fascination with junk-mail get-rich-quick offers. Responding to one, he sees a small return; soon, he is running a paper empire out of a phone booth in the school hallway. Everyone from the school staff to the municipal government to the squabbling heirs of a player-piano company to the titans of Wall Street and the politicians in Washington will be caught up in the endlessly ballooning bubble of the J R Family of Companies. First published in 1975 and winner of the National Book Award in 1976, J R is an appallingly funny and all-too-prophetic depiction of America’s romance with finance. It is also a book about suburban development and urban decay, divorce proceedings and disputed wills, the crumbling facade of Western civilization and the impossible demands of love and art, with characters ranging from the earnest young composer Edward Bast to the berserk publicist Davidoff. Told almost entirely through dialogue, William Gaddis’s novel is both a literary tour de force and an unsurpassed reckoning with the way we live now.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lands of In-Ko-8 Trilogy The planet Earth enveloped Inchoate, a dark-matter world at the birth of the solar system. Each evolved separately but not independently. The civilizations of Inchoate flourished until a disaster flung the world to the Sirius star system where it remained for a millennium. Scientists finally restored Inchoate to its rightful place in the galaxy, but the resulting damage, chaos, and greed led to conflict, confusion, and wars. A few brave leaders of the blue, green, and gray people almost brought order when a totally unexpected visit by star wanderers intervened. A review by Kirkus Discoveries: Fishers complex story of faith, political schemes, death, and science brings characters new and old into the fray, and further explores characters in the strange world of Inchoate. The world of Inchoate is on the brink of disaster, leading scientists to return the dark-matter planet to its former haunt within the planet Earth. The task is made possible via the ingenious travalink, a device that allows near-light transport from one part of the universe to the other. The planets inhabitants are no sooner settled in to their old home, however, before unearthing a finding of great political and religious significanceone that threatens to shake the planet to its core. Fishers keen grasp of science helps create a believable, full-bodied civilization. The lands and characters resemble an odd marriage of J. R. R. Tolkiens Lord of the Rings saga and the more recent Dune novels. The authors descriptions of the various languages of Inchoate, and the background of various civilizations, are reminiscent of Tolkiens seminal work. His characters range from religious leaders to criminals, and like the Dune characters, each gets print time in this tale. Inchoate is a land with a varied, rich history, culled from seemingly real-life examples. The authors sharp attention to detail, in elements from language to food, brings an original sense of realism to the talesometimes it appears more of history book than fiction. A condensed, fast-paced story, whose entertaining intensity will eventually sweep readers away.

Book excerpt: Stephen Nasser somehow dug deep within his soul to survive the brutal and inhumane treatement his captors inflicted on the Jews. He was the only one of his family to survive--but the memory of his brother's dying words compelled him to live. Stephen's account of the Holocaust, told in the refreshingly direct and optimistic language of a young boy, appeals to both younger audiences and his contemporaries. Written in a straightforward, narrative style, Nasser avoids the cloying or maudlin language that characterizes some stories of the Holocaust. Perhaps it's for that reason readers will find his book one they won't forget--and one they recommend to others as a "must read."

Book excerpt: Tsarist Russia teeters on the brink of revolution while it engages in a war against the Germans and Austrians. The Bolsheviks simmer and seethe as the Russian Army concentrates on the invaders rather than the revolutionists within. The wealthy Milanov children are at the center of the storm, and the changing winds of time and politics will push them apart. Both siblings grew up on top of horses, as many in the privileged class did, but their skill and mounts are beyond comparison. Catrina's horse, Mouka, is an extension of herself, the embodiment of her fiery spirit. And her brother, Joseph, shares the same close bond with his golden stallion, Majesty. When war and pride divide the siblings, Catrina selflessly offers a trade, one horse for the other, and tearfully says goodbye to both brother and equestrian friend. But her indomitable will smolders within her, burning with hope for a reunion with her beloved brother after he goes off to fight the Huns. Soon, more than heartache is threatening the Milanov family as the Bolshevik Revolution boils over Russia. Fleeing for her life, Catrina once more relies on her fierce spirit to bluff and charm her way out of one situation after another, finally securing passage to America, land of opportunity. More than one harrowing escapade bonds rider and horse, but just as freedom and safety seem within sight, Majesty is suddenly missing. Tired, poor, huddled, and homeless, Catrina steps onto American soil without family or a single familiar face, not even her lone, remaining friend, Majesty.
