Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicely Saunders is universally acclaimed as a pioneer of modern hospice care. Trained initially in nursing and social work, she qualified in medicine in 1958 and subsequently dedicated the whole of her professional life to improving the care of the dying and bereaved people. Founding StChristopher's Hospice in London in 1967, she encouraged a radical new approach to end of life care combining attention to physical, social, emotional and spiritual problems, brilliantly captured in her concept of 'total pain'. Her ideas about clinical care, education and research have been hugelyinfluential, leading to numerous prizes and awards in recognition of her humanitarian achievements. In this book the sociologist and historian David Clark presents a selection of her vast correspondence, together with his own commentary. The letters of Cicely Saunders tell a remarkable story ofvision, determination and creativity. They should be read by anyone interested in how we die in the modern world.

This book was released on 1963 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tape-recorded interviews were used in obtaining from fifty-two baccalaureate nursing graduates: (1) opinions about the hospital staff nurse position with reference to preservice education and (2) perceived deterrents to the practice of five clinical nursing functions. The aim was to discover certain factors in a large teaching hospital which may influence the professionally prepared staff nurse in carrying out her primary role as clinician. Clinical functions were identified from a review of the literature: (1) planning and implementing individualized nursing care, (2) teaching patient and family, (3) collaborating with members of the health team, (4) assigning and guiding nonprofessional assistants, and (5) utilizing intramural and inter-agency nursing referrals. Interview responses were classified by content areas, then categorized and reported as a description of a range of opinions and perceived deterrents.
