Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Arnold, second son of Dr Arnold of Rugby, left England in search of a new life, first in New Zealand and then in Van Diemen's Land (Tasmania) in 1850. There he became an inspector of schools and married the beautiful Julia Sorrell. The record covered in this second volume of his letters begins at this point and continues with a generous selection of his letters to the end of his life in 1900. The earlier letters give a vivid impression of life in Van Diemen's Land and of his own home life. Arnold holds an interesting, if minor, place in literary and educational history. However, the great strength and fascination of these letters probably lies in their record of the man himself, caught up, sometimes tempestuously, in the movements of his time, particularly in his religious unsettlement and wrestling with Roman Catholicism; and of a marriage in which agonising disagreements on the deepest issues threatened but never overwhelmed the mutual love of both.

Book excerpt: About this letter: Thomas Arnold, son or Dr. Arnold of Rugby, came to Tasmania from New Zealand in 1850 to work as an inspector of schools. He proved a scathing critic of Governor Denison's penny-a-day educational system, or his lack of system. Seeking advice and information on matters affecting education Arnold began a correspondence with H.C.E. Childers, Secretary of the Denominational Schools Board of Victoria and one of the foremost colonial educationists. When Childers was promoted to the position of Immigration Agent his place with the Board was taken by squatter, newspaperman and inspector of schools, Colin Campbell, an Oxford graduate in arts. It was to Campbell that Arnold wrote the letter." -- p. 4.
Book Synopsis A Victorian Wanderer by : Bernard Bergonzi

Book excerpt: A biography of Matthew Arnold's Catholic younger brother Tom, a scholar, teacher, and self-styled 'wanderer'. Arnold's path in life took him, after a brilliant start at Oxford, to colonial New Zealand, to Tasmania, to Dublin, back to Oxford, and once more to Dublin, where he died in 1900. Hisspiritual wanderings led him into the Catholic Church, then out of it for some years, and finally back to it. He was close both to Matthew and to John Henry Newman, and his relations with them show unfamiliar aspects of these eminent Victorians. As a young man, Tom Arnold knew the elderlyWordsworth, and Arthur Hugh Clough was his closest friend. He was acquainted with such celebrated Oxford personalities as Benjamin Jowett, Mark Pattison, and Lewis Carroll; as a Professor of English in Dublin he was a colleague of Gerard Manley Hopkins; and in the last year of his life he read andapproved of an undergraduate essay by James Joyce. The book makes an original contribution to Victorian studies at the same time as telling an absorbing human story. An appendix contains a previously unpublished letter from Matthew Arnold to his brother.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This pioneering examination of travel writing about New Zealand in the colonial period discusses a wide range of writing that helped place New Zealand on the literary map, while providing an oblique history of the young nation in the 19th century. Exploring early newspaper accounts; the journals of missionaries, traders, and adventurers; and the guidebooks and specialized descriptions of fishing, and hunting, which promoted New Zealand as a sporting paradise, Wevers finds that writing about New Zealand was an essential tool in the colonization process.
